Back in the mid 1970s, (1976 to be exact) the Gary Works had Tours of the Gary Works Plant...many of us who grew up here all of our lives had a chance to experience what our Fathers, Mothers, and Neighbors who worked there had to endure. It's amazing JUST HOW BIG this place really is! It is one place where you can see all types of railcars being used. When I growing up here in the 1960s, when you got older, High School Counselors, Clergy, Teachers would PUSH you to learn all you could because the Steel Mill would be around forever, and a JOB was literally guaranteed. Or so it seemed. In The 1970s and 80s, 90s was when things really began to change...Foreign Steel, Competition From Other Area Steel Mills led to many folks being laid off, others retiring, etc. And with many moving out of Gary, the City went down too. People love to come here and do Videos (not referring to yours, this is fabulous) about how Gary is so damned dangerous, and passing FALSE Information that everyone who resides here are criminals, drug dealers, uneducated children, etc., which is so very wrong. Well, I'm not. Yes, in my growing up, Downtown Gary, and the City itself was something to behold! But I've notice people today (2024) who do have MONEY to invest, they are buying up and rehabilitating homes that are abandoned and have a chance to make them into something special...better than it was when it was first built! Many homes in the Midtown/Midtown East, Emerson, Glen Park were built at the height of the Gary Works heyday, and these homes were referred to as, "Steel Worker's" Homes. In today's times, they require quite a bit of rehabilitation, all the way down to the Sewer System/Plumbing, etc., because much of the infrastructure goes way back to the 1940s! A few years ago, there was a CREW doing work in the ALLEY behind my home; and I was talking to the Men working, and they told me that the Sewer Tunnel about 15-20 feet UNDER the street was all BRICKS like a Subway Tunnel! Back to the house rehabs...people are coming here, and spending money in large numbers on Real Estate! And, I still have a neighbor that still works down there at USS Gary Works. So when I happen to visit people I know down in Lowell, Schereville, Crown Point, Hobart, and other locations in Northwest Indiana who are elderly (many of them Caucasian) they spent their entire working lives at USS Gary Works! As things got worse in Gary, (in the 1970s) the "White Flight" began...but have to remember that the many dollars spent on those very beautiful communities came from the Men And Women who worked up here at Gary Works, and other Steel Mills, such as Inland, Youngstown, and Bethlehem. And people, I don't care what COLOR your skin is, are entitled to LIVE wherever they want to. But in talking with many of them, they have some very fond memories when things were so different. Sam, it's time to talk Trains here... hey! I just noticed you caught a (former) Grand Trunk Western (GT) EMD SD40 Locomotive pushing with two other Locomotives moving Cars back towards the HUMP at CN's Kirk Yard! I haven't seen one of those in many years! The very last I saw 2 of them back to back was in the 1980s, hauling Coal Cars for NIPSCO's Michigan City Generating Electric Plant on the South Shore Railroad! The Locomotives were being leased by the South Shore Railroad at the time. Thank You so very much for posting these great, "SKYCOPTER AIR VIDEOS"; I guess this totally makes up for the chance that I didn't have in the 1970s, for I was still in High School, and you had people who've never been to Gary (period) come in droves just to get a glimpse of it! I used to see the out of town Transit Buses parked outside the old (no longer there at 22nd and Jefferson Street) Gary Public Transportation Bus Garage, that used to be where the Main Facility and Storage Barn for Gary Railways Streetcars! Sam...you really DO love Trains; well, so do I! Thank You Again. 😊

That place USS steel has been sold to Japan meaning, a lot of workers are going to be out of work soon. Because Japan doesn’t need this place

Oh, so that's what those cars were for. I have been using US National Geologic Map Database to map out the entirety of the Rock Island on Google Earth, so you can imagine I was perplexed as to why the railroad grade was a lot more visible (more intact) than the rest of the grade east of Allendorf. I do hope that these do not get scrapped, but time will unfortunately tell as they still sit there with a time stamp of August 2024 on Google Maps (Google Earth does not tell you the date the Streetview was taken for the browser version).

The yellow slug was at fairfield Southern in Fairfield. Al. Carnagie would roll over in his grave if he could see what the federal government and moronic CEOs have done to that once great American empire. Now, the feds are stopping NEPON steel from investing in U S mills while the feds work tirelessly to kill the mills themselves through bullshit like climate change, leaving holes in the laws so CHEAP foreign steel can be brought into North America through Canada while crying about "national security and our steel making ability." Pathetic! Looking at those empty parking lots makes me sick for my nation! Here's an even crazier part! The unions at these mills encourage their member to vote/promote for the circus clowns who destroyed those jobs in 2015 and almost had them all shut down and are doing it today! We are a messed up society!

Im from California where we have no manufacturing industry. I urban explored an old concrete plant by Buffington Harbor that was being demolished. The place was freakin huge. It completely blew my mind. I loved that area. It made me feel like i was in America.

That landfill break wall east of the ore slip, towards Miller Beach, used to be a haven for the community’s perch fishermen, forever.Access was closed off around 2005.I think it had to do with Homeland Security Act,passed earlier. Background check and official photo ID was required for entry into any of these facilities on the lakeshore.God,I miss that wall.

Since ELS is kind of short on power, take another SD9,and either make a slug unit out of it, or a regular loco. They already have 1221 running, and the rest can be for parts.
