Nice one John, and good on you for helping a fellow out! 👏 I'm in the UK and when I first started my channel and motovlogging about a year ago, I went with the 60fps that everyone said I should use, even though some of these were quite big KZbinrs also from the UK. I didn't notice a problem until one day I happened to ride past a pub that had incandescent lights outside, which were strobing badly on the footage. I tried to use the deflicker effect, but it wouldn't fix the lights unfortunately, as I think the effect works better on the whole frame rather than individual points of light. It was only some test footage so no real problem, but I quickly learned to set all my cameras, my phone and even my drone to 50fps so I didn't end up with a problem later on. Interestingly, these same KZbinrs now all seem to be using 50fps so I wonder if they learned the hard way too!
@CreatorReality1Күн бұрын
Thanks, bud! I genuinely had fun tackling this challenge, even as simple as the fix ended up being. Sounds like you got caught in the flicker zone with your test footage - and yeah, those other motovloggers figured it out post haste. Different cameras might be more or less susceptible to it as well. It's interesting that Deflicker didn't work for you... Andy had flicker in several shots and it just wiped it all out.

Interesting video. I was familiar with "Deflicker" but didn't know it could be stacked. I live in Europe so frequency mismatch is something I always take into account before recording. The fact that your friend recorded on an iPhone got me thinking and testing with my 14 Pro. What I found was that there was no perceivable flicker when previewing or recording the TV(50 Hz) or the Christmas tree lights(50 Hz) or battery-powered LED lights while shooting at 24, 25 or 30fps. Where it became noticeable(and only in the projected light on the wall and not the lights themselves) was at 60fps and I didn't go higher as a pattern was starting to develop and I don't typically shoot faster anyway. The flicker in preview was slightly more noticeable than the recorded file. Maybe the flicker in the clip shot at 60 fps was the reason "Deflicker" worked the best on it? Unless you need to slow the footage down in post, a reasonable option would be to shoot at one of the three slower "base" recording speeds instead of switching to a different system, PAL or NTSC as the case may be.
@CreatorReality13 күн бұрын
I had no idea it could be stacked either... until I tried it. Then I knew I had to make this video - I couldn't be the ONLY person who needed that! My buddy accidentally shot in higher frame rates, which didn't help, and like you, it was the reflections that caused an issue more so than the actual lights. I totally agree - he should've shot in one of the slower framerates, but it is what it is, and accidents happen. Thanks for watching and reporting on your own testing! I wonder if your iPhone has a deflicker built in that is tuned for your region? I'm not an iPhone user, so I can't test it myself.
@markwornom10503 күн бұрын
@@CreatorReality1 I wondered too about built-in flicker reduction when I didn't see flicker in the first three framerates but decided to try 60 as well and that's where I came to the conclusion that if it had it, it wasn't globally effective. So, no, I don't believe the iPhone has much of it, if at all. You are definitely right about accidents happening and I seem to remember from testing a previous DSLR using those three framerates that 24 appeared to be the "One to Rule Them All" as well as being considered a more "cinematic" framerate. So, when in doubt, that's my safe "go-to" regardless of the continent.
@CreatorReality13 күн бұрын
@@markwornom1050 Interesting... the only camera I *know* has anti-flicker built-in is GoPro. Funny about the 24 "One FR to rule them all" - back in the day, movie companies were trying to save money, so they did some research and found that 24 fps is the lowest you can go without humans noticing that they're watching individual frames, so that's what the movie industry standardized on [at least if the documentaries I've watched can be believed].
@markwornom10503 күн бұрын
@@CreatorReality1 You just jogged my memory and I do remember reading that about the 24fps. A more effective way to get a cinematic look is to use the "180 degree shutter rule" which you no doubt have heard of. Adds a slight bit of motion blur that looks more natural. I hate leaving my drone cameras on auto especially in the bright months because they will choose a shutter speed so high that flicker will start to become visible. I think I remember seeing the anti-flicker setting on my GoPro, I probably set it for auto and forgot about it. One thing I will say though is that it only chooses between 50 and 60 Hz and I still got some obvious light flicker in Christmas Market lights that I believed were driven by a transformer that didn't conform to the standard 50 Hz frequency. Love my GoPro and can't wait to see what the Max 2 will turn out to be. I decided against an Insta360 X4 over the holidays because I won't settle for less than 10bit video in these days.
@CreatorReality13 күн бұрын
@@markwornom1050 A lot to unpack here, but yes, 24fps gives natural motion blur, and the 180-degree rule IS a thing - and I use it in my videos [30fps, 1/60 shutter speed for all my talking heads - I set my Manual mode on the Nikon Z30 to that, and never touch it LOL]. I get the shutter speed getting cranked... I filmed a bit with the Nikon in shade to drop the shutter speed, because it didn't play nice in the sun with an item I was reviewing. GoPros do a good job - they're overlooked due to certain specs and features, but mine have been quite reliable... and I have more than a few. I too, am waiting on the Max 2 to show up and see what it does. FWIW, the X4 uses the same sensor as the X3, but uses in-camera upscaling to go from 5.7k to 8k. No thanks. And DJI's Action 5 is great, but AFAIK still has a lower bitrate to save on battery life - a coming firmware is supposed to fix that, but I haven't seen it posted about anywhere lately.

Using the Cut Page is way faster and easier by using the Sync Bin. All clips plus separate audio tracks from a lavalier can be synced easily and you can mark in and out quickly whatever part of a clip you like to place on top of your master track. Then afterwards you can start the finetuning on the Editor Page.

@GreyBiker999 күн бұрын
I've been using the method you showed in your previous Multicam video since I watched it, after struggling for months to get the sync bin to work correctly with the footage from my three cameras. It was a complete game changer for me as the sync bin method just isn't accurate enough when dealing with motorcycle footage that only has one clear audio track to work with. I tend to do one clip per timeline, but I'm going to try this method of having all the clips on one timeline next time, as I think it looks a lot more efficient. I have the added complication of one of my cameras being on my wifes helmet so her audio is completely separate from mine as she rides her own bike. In addition to this, the audio on my 3rd camera is from a mic under my seat so all that has is engine noise on it. I have to combine the three audio tracks into one compound track before I convert the timeline to multicam. Once I've finished the edit, I have to flatten the multicam clips and then decompose the compound audio to separate them back onto three audio tracks to be able to tweak them individually. All good fun, but I'm still looking for a better way to do this! Love the bonus tip by the way! Great video as always John, many thanks!
@CreatorReality19 күн бұрын
First of all, I'm glad you got something out of both videos! Second, I'm glad you have a solution for your wife's audio - for the "2nd rider cam", I put them on separate audio/video tracks, and edit my Multicam as usual, disabling the 2nd rider cam when I want to show something from my own cameras. It's not the best solution, but it preserves the audio I want. I think this is what you're going for by flattening and decomposing after editing. I think you could also do this with your engine audio clips. Third, thanks! I'm always happy to share new efficiencies I've found :D

Definitely appreciate the patience and the explanation of the the Switch node. I can see multiple applications for this node. The easiest way to achieve the reverse - is to make make the Stage Curtains a compound clip and put a reverse time effect on to the compound clip itself. Still, I appreciate the mental math inside Fusion because walk throughs like this give you an overall better understanding of how Fusion works... and it can be a very hard thing to wrap your head around.
@CreatorReality123 күн бұрын
Thanks! And I know there's an easier way - I showed doing that in the previous "Reverse Fusion Comps" video. All that effort just to reverse an effect… Davinci needs to simply this. I would just add the Curtain effect, make it a compound clip and then reverse the compound clip.
