One guy says one thing, another guy says something else. Who is right? Are they both right or both wrong? And who is to say either way? Personally I think any bunkai is not to be taken literally. Am I right or am I wrong? It doesn't help that at 7.42 it has to be this certain hand, at a certain height etc.

very good. It is crazy....Bruce Lee in mid-60s was putting Western Fencing footwork in what he has doing because it was more realistic than the old traditional karate approach to distance management. Look now....Same with the kicking - use of the back leg to hide the covering of the distance - Bill Wallace took it and ...became a legend...Kind of crazy how the world changes...and those who make it evolve are always critized.

Read your both books. Interesting. So, the Japanese collect money from all over the world, use it for financing their living as salaries, and that is why they keep the karate monopoly tight. Nice way of living. And moreover they sell dan grades as sushi to everyone who pays for. I knew that and denied to pass dan tests after receiving my black belt in the 90th - you’ve just confirmed.

In video : Fudodachi legs are in one line which is wrong, both legs must be hip wide apart. The Kibadachi is off line at 2:26 it must be in a line and the knees must be outwards not inwards. At 4:13 after the jump Kokutsudachi must be in a line (the blue shirt karateka is not in a line). And the blue shirt karateka needs to do more hip rotations in his movements (like his sensei who does it correctly). Respect to both of you Karateka.

As an old Yondan I can say that this is very good interpretation and demonstration of body mechanics and maiai or distance and continuation of moving center. This is knowledgeable and applicable.

I do like this fluid style of Jiyu Ippon Kumite. Avoidance of 'stiff karate' is the aim at our dojo, and this helps promote that in a physical and mental sense.

One of the best if not the BEST explanation for Chinte, I will be teaching my students. Thank you Scott Sensei. Of maybe interest, Chinte Kata was not developed by a woman, and neither is it applicable only for women (a past Japanese instructor said and it stuck), I would say its applicable to everyone. For example if an assailant grabs you likely he is going to do a head butt, then the attack to the eyes is THE most logical self defence (apart from obviously lowering your head so if they do head butt :)

The leg block worked well at 3.32. But what if it had been a fast punch? Because in a real fight it is very hard to predict what's coming. I really do think the vast majority of so called bunkai is nonsense. As an example, somebody please explain to me how the start of heian nedan or yondan could EVER be used in a real fight situation. Don't get me wrong, I've studied karate for over 30 years and I still am, I love doing katas but I do think that concentrating ( spending hours on end with bunkai ) on moves that blatantly have no practical use is perhaps detrimental. Every organisation is guilty of having their own rules and following a certain curriculum, which in turn puts pressure on the teachers to justify that curriculum. I personally believe kata is a form of movement/even dance, with some obvious useful moves ( kick/punch/grab etc ) who's main purpose is for the wellbeing of the practitioner, like tia chi, but at the same time incorporating moves that could be useful in a real fight situation. It was transformed by Funakoshi into pretty much what it is today but then Bruce Lee did the same with kung fu, they made it popular, which in one way is great because they are beneficial to the practitioner. It's not for everyone. They say it is but one size fits all doesn't work for everyone. I'm going off track, back to bunkai, apart from everything else, there must be, let's say 10 moves in each kata which could be explained in bunkai. If you know 10 katas, that could be 100 specific moves. 100 moves in the memory bank. Is that even possible? Under extreme stress? Anyway, I could be wrong, wouldn't be the first time. Anyone like to convince me I'll be happy to discuss it.

It was mind-boggling! Exactly what I needed! In 2 weeks from now I have my 3Dan exam and I'll have to show some bunkai to Chinte, and this kata was so hard for me to understand. Your bunkai makes so much sense, and it's different from what I thought it was. Arigato gozaimasu, Sensei!

Thanks for that video, Scott! Always love your vids and explanations. I’m doing my technique this way, compressing my abdomen and bringing my pelvis up. That works very well even in mawashi geri, yoko kekomi and even on ura mawashi geri. But I can’t make it work in yoko keage, because Im losing the snap. Im starting my kick with the pelvis. What’s the problem with yoko keage? Thanks in advance! Oss!
