The leg block worked well at 3.32. But what if it had been a fast punch? Because in a real fight it is very hard to predict what's coming. I really do think the vast majority of so called bunkai is nonsense. As an example, somebody please explain to me how the start of heian nedan or yondan could EVER be used in a real fight situation. Don't get me wrong, I've studied karate for over 30 years and I still am, I love doing katas but I do think that concentrating ( spending hours on end with bunkai ) on moves that blatantly have no practical use is perhaps detrimental. Every organisation is guilty of having their own rules and following a certain curriculum, which in turn puts pressure on the teachers to justify that curriculum. I personally believe kata is a form of movement/even dance, with some obvious useful moves ( kick/punch/grab etc ) who's main purpose is for the wellbeing of the practitioner, like tia chi, but at the same time incorporating moves that could be useful in a real fight situation. It was transformed by Funakoshi into pretty much what it is today but then Bruce Lee did the same with kung fu, they made it popular, which in one way is great because they are beneficial to the practitioner. It's not for everyone. They say it is but one size fits all doesn't work for everyone. I'm going off track, back to bunkai, apart from everything else, there must be, let's say 10 moves in each kata which could be explained in bunkai. If you know 10 katas, that could be 100 specific moves. 100 moves in the memory bank. Is that even possible? Under extreme stress? Anyway, I could be wrong, wouldn't be the first time. Anyone like to convince me I'll be happy to discuss it.
