I write a lot, but never had problems with distraction. In fact I've found that distraction helps me to break a blockage. My mind seems to subconsciously work on a solution while I'm checking my emails or reading up on the news. It's important though that I don't let myself be distracted for too long, ten minutes at the longest. I'd be interested in a device like the Freewrite for travel, but the display on this product is far too small for my tastes. I've also heard that their is no display backlight for working in unfavourable lighting conditions. I've come to enjoy the backlight in my e-reader and would certainly miss it on a writing device such as the Freewrite.

I definitely find that I break through blocks when I'm taking a walk or a shower. But I also definitely need help keeping focused on writing during writing time. That's why I like the pomodoro method and making breaks part of the structure of my day rather than just taking a break whenever I feel like it.
@mikethespike75793 күн бұрын
@@WritersWins I suppose every author has their own method of focusing on their work and releasing blockages. Some listen to music (one of my methods) before starting to write, others take the dog for a walk. I've tried the pomodoro method and found myself staring at the timer waiting for it to count down so that I can look up my emails LOL!

I'm a big fan of the Pomodoro Timer. I'd go as far as saying it's better than writing in a flow state for longer periods of time. The 5 minute break is key, stepping away from work, letting your mind wander on a short walk can boost creativity.
@WritersWins5 күн бұрын
Same here. It seems counterintuitive, but it really can be more productive to schedule breaks rather than just trying to work all day long.

@@WritersWins 2 comments, to state the same. Just don't use this, keep your phone in a different room. Imagine you actually have an emergency and your phone is locked, or a relative/friend needs your help. Just horrendous idea of a gadget.
@JosephDickson9 күн бұрын
I place my phone on airplane mode when I'm writing or leave it in another room. Cute idea but no more useful than a standard, simple, lockbox or safe.
@WritersWins9 күн бұрын
I hear you, but I do like combining the timer with the lockbox. And seeing it on my desk does remind me to put the phone away and get to work.

Dude, that’s loud. Not for public consumption? Can’t take to library??

I think my microphone might be making it sound louder than it is. It might be loud for a very quiet place, but you don’t need earplugs or anything.

What I find a little funny is how the watch you wear in those shots is a way more versatile and multi-functional tool than your digital typewriter. I do understand that's the point of this device, but it still makes me chuckle a little.

Fair enough, but have you ever tried to write a novel on a watch?

What keycaps did u use as replacements?

I used the keycaps from a Nuphy Air75. I’d replaced those keycaps with one of their sets.

Are the keys that come factory not good??
@WritersWins25 күн бұрын
The factory keycaps are square and felt clumsy under my fingers, but some people might like them. The good news is that they can be customized if you want to use a different type of keycap.

pity you turned down the light. it was much more legible in the video when brighter. boy that lag. one reason i went for the alpha. little did i know ...
@WritersWinsАй бұрын
Thanks for the comment. I’ll turn the light up when filming. The lag is unfortunate. I was just writing today on my Supernote with Bluetooth keyboard, and it has less lag and a much cleaner looking refresh. The lag on the Freewrite doesn’t bother me too much, but there are e-ink screens out there doing it better.

Do you think it’s worth it over the alpha? 3 times the price!
@WritersWinsАй бұрын
That’s a tough question. I got the Alpha used and had a discount code from nanowrimo that I used for the typewriter. If I was only going to keep one, it would be the typewriter. It’s definitely a luxury, but I think I’m going to write more with it than without, so it’s worth it to me.

Get yourself an AlphaSmart Neo or Neo 2. They're what the Freewrite Alpha is trying to be.
@WritersWinsАй бұрын
Yeah, I definitely want to try out an AlphaSmart, but I haven’t gotten my hands on one yet. I think the sync method of typing into a file on your computer is hilarious and clever.
@Retro6502Ай бұрын
@@WritersWins They're a dream to type on and the display is very easy to read. Originally they came with Windows and Mac software to move text files on and off them directly, but having it emulate a keyboard is quite clever and a great bit of future-proofing! If someone comes across one without the software, the software stops working due to OS updates, or someone wants to use it on an OS there's no software for (e.g., Linux, etc), they can still fully utilize the device and easily get their writing off of it. They're really an amazing bit of design and engineering. They even thought to include a guide on the bottom label that explains how to use it and all the keyboard shortcuts if you don't have the manual lol
