So, Māoris' water rights are both recognized, and respected, towards both the generations, and distributions, of hydroelectricity in New Zealand 😃😃😃😃😃.

Decarbonisation is a lie created and perpetrated by the cabal of elites in order to enrich themselves, and bring in a destructive environment for the people of the world in order to flilp a switch and reduce population. Iwi need to wake up and realise that they are a significant part of the move to destroy their world as much as ours.

Now, in order for the wind turbines to generate electricity, there has to be the ever-present wind velocities; of which is easier said than done in global warming-ridden Planet Earth.

Fascinating! And they managed to make this complete documentary without using "Damn the dam" on the soundtrack. Those of us who were aware of environmental issues back in the day remember the societal shift that this project caused. What we take for granted today.......

But tell me babe, how do you store excess wind turbine electrical generation for use when the wind isn't blowing? Any pumped storage in Wellington? Any large lithium or sodium battery arrays? Any cryogenic air storage? Until renewable energy is dispatchable, like hydro ore geothermal or fossil fuel thermal, or nuclear, it is only have the solution.

Lake levels have remained the same because the massive protests *stopped* the lake level being raised by 100 feet (pre metric) and drowning everything around the place. As it was damage was done by stopping the normal lake levels ebb and flow. Nice puff piece Meridian Energy.

My father Earle Nunn was on construction from start to finish mid 1960 -1971 he lived in the new hydro site with mum and my sister two years before I was born, Dad was a operator at the station as well, I remember going to work with Dad and sleeping in the rag bins down by the generators, we moved to the Hydro Village after the Construction from 1971 to 1979 in October that year we moved to Christchurch, I was 6 years and dad continued to work for NZED, Alstrom, Transfield Services before his retirement 2015 after 50 years of service to NZ Electricity.

Not sure how I missed not knowing there was a reunion to celebrate the building of Manapouri - I worked on the original West Arm permanent installation, and returned four times after that for upgrades to the station - including while the second tailrace was being constructed, but we were so busy I never really got to see what they were up too, we were on a tight timeframe while upgrading each generator's control and instrumentation - and finally giving each unit an auto sync capability which they never had until then. I have lived at Te Anau, Manapouri, Manapouri Hydro Construction Village and West Arm during my stints with Utah Construction and Mining, Wilkins and Davies - Wismer and Becker,(GEC) Alstom and so on. I think I still have my UCM "Boat Pass" and a timesheet stashed away somewhere. I remember the first start of Unit 1 (NZED) when the Earths were left connected in the VT Cubicle, we had to walk up the access tunnel to evacuate because of the smoke and much later an inadvertent CO2 dump into a Stator Room caused us to evacuate!

It's so convenient to decarbonize NZ with population of only 5mil. across the 100k sq. mile of land mass that is rich in renewable energy resources such as wind and hydro (I reckon there are more sheeps than people there). Glad to know that Kiwis are well equiped with climate change awareness and its know how remedy based on what natural resources are available there 🇦🇺.

Great Video Meridan, I have always had mixed feelings about this project, manapouri is one of the truly pristine environments in NZ, the power was used exclusively by the Aluminum Smelter at Bluff, to refine a product which was imported into NZ and the refined Product was exported overseas (mainly) The Smelter owners always bullied the Govt with closing the plant if we didn't give them cheap power, which eventually they have done! It was part of the Muldoon Govt "Think Big" projects which aimed to "industrialise" NZ! I know that Manapouri may be used to produce "Hydrogen" in the future! It would be interesting to see some investment analysis as to the merits of the project in hindsight! Thanks for sharing

WHEN earth gets its next carrington event equivalent, ( thats not an "if", same goes fore the overdue main alpine fault going pop). will the conductive components in the generating hall be deep enough to be immune to a solar killshot that would instantly put earth back to preindustrial advancement. What if any measures are meridian taking to protect systems from this inevitability? Dont buy any power, would be yours if i did, Im happily off grid and love it .cheers for the hydro history guys! ❤ From twizel.

This brings back great memories. After the completion, the accommodation was given to the then Education Board for schools to camp at. I was with the second school to camp there, such an awesome time. Going on the launch from Te Anau across the lake, being met by lots of kea and bussing over the Wilmont pass. Rowing out in dingys and setting lines for tuna. We actually caught one and had it for breakfast. Tramping up the hanging valley with moss a foot or so deep. The waterfalls (Helena) would magically spring up all over the place when it rained. A once in a life time camp and my children and grand children have also been lucky enough enjoy this part of the world. Great memories.
