I was a bit more than 10 years old when Mt Pinatubo in the Philippines erupted, after sleeping for mor than 600 years. The people of the provinces of Zambales, Tarlac and Pampanga in Central Luzon region were severely affected when that massive volcano turned inside-out, and waves upon waves of superheated pyroclastic flows and scalding lahars raged down the volcano. In my place, we suffered this freakish ashfall, when the sparkling 3 pm afternoon turned forebodingly grey then really really dark, as if it was about to become 7 pm. That was June 15, the day of the climactic eruption when Pinatubo blasted itself to atoms. for the people of Central Luzon Hell broke loose when massive pyroclastic flows raced down the mountain and into the towns, ricefields and cities. Even Clark Airbase, the largest American-held airbase in Asia, was either buried or demolished by the flows. And there was this iconic photo shot of a blue AUV van racing down a dirt road while a pyroclastic flow was literally chasing them and bearing down on them.
