Full Screen Version:
• Krakatoa: The Last Day...
From the BBC docu-drama, "Krakatoa: The Last Days." The movie is also known as "Krakatoa: Volcano of Destruction" and aired on Discovery Channel. The movie brings to life the journals and recollections of four witnesses who survived the cataclysmic eruption of Krakatoa in August of 1883.
This segment features Captain Lindeman's account on the ship, Governor General Loudon, at sea on the Sunda Strait in which Krakatoa resides. The ship, owned by the Netherlands Indies Steamship Company, served as an excursion vessel and mail steamer, based out of Batavia (present day Jakarta), Indonesia.
Hot ash and small particles of pumice that Krakatoa had spewed into the atmosphere began to fall in great, continuous amounts, blanketing a wide area over the surrounding sea and coasts, hiding the sun as if nightfall had descended. Ash is dangerous everywhere, which can start fires and make the exercise of breathing extremely difficult, but more so to vulnerable ships on the open sea as Captain Lindeman is about to find out.
Read Captain Lindeman's very informative in-depth account of his ship's survival through this catastrophic event:
Survivor Diary -- Capt. Lindeman
dsc.discovery.c...
Note: There's NO DESTRUCTION in this one video out of the series. I included it because ash is a major component of a volcanic eruption. This clip shows Captain Lindeman's wisdom in keeping the ship afloat.
If you want to see the full docudrama, you can catch it on Discovery Channel, rent it, or buy the DVD at Amazon.co.uk:

Those lights are called St. Elmo's fire. According to Wikipedia: St. Elmo's fire (also St. Elmo's light) is an electrical weather phenomenon in which luminous plasma is created by a coronal discharge originating from a grounded object in an atmospheric electric field (such as those generated by thunderstorms or thunderstorms created by a volcanic explosion). Hope this helps!

The Governor General Loudon was still at sea when the volcano erupted. It was because of the brave work of the captain and his quick thinking that everyone on his ship survived. And he was given a special commendation for his heroic actions.

Considering just how massive that event was, safe distance was at least a few hundred to thousand miles away

The whole movie is really good! I have a link to the Amazon UK in the bottom of the information box in case you want to get the DVD (which is Region 2). I haven't been able to find it anywhere else, but if you do (and especially in Region 1), please let me know and I'll add it.

I'm not sure. I haven't come across any accounts where someone directly touched it, although I've read of a pilot who touched it through the glass of the airplane's windshield. She said that it tickled or tingled like when one's hand falls asleep. The flame itself is heatless and non-consuming (won't oxidate or burn the object it touches).

this ash is rock ok, do you have any idea how easy a ship can capsize with half a foot of this stuff covering it?
@MereoskaDoreoska-kj2qf
@MereoskaDoreoska-kj2qf Жыл бұрын
ash from volcanoes sometimes contain other earth material such as small peeble and shard of rocks, and the ash itself are already thick so if big amount of that ash is covering the ship, it can reduce visibility, giving unimportant additional weight to the ship, risking the ship to sink and some peeble can damage external body of the ship
