This show is a little bit before my time so I remember hearing the urban myths and believing them. I was told there was a "Master Bates", "Seaman Staines", "Pirate Willy" (sometimes told as "Big Willy the Pirate"), and "Roger the Cabin Boy". Turns out only one of those was real (except I'm not so sure he was ever called "Big Willy the Pirate", just "Pirate Willy"), but it's so easy to see how the myth could spread. Pirate Willy being real and eliciting a few giggles and a few kids mishearing Master Mates as Bates and then along the line someone must have asked "what's the other seaman's name?" and someone says "I think Staines" and they giggle and start telling everyone the name of the other pirate ("Seaman Staines" was actually Pirate Barnabas). And then someone was like "And there was the cabin boy's name, what was it?" and a kid is about to say "Tom" but then decides on "Roger" and laughs to himself. And then a myth is born. The myth probably started within a month of the show's first airing, because you know how kids are.

Pretty sure I saw this when it went out live, because I recalled it immediately. I remember being lucky enough to get tickets to see Blue Nile at what was the Colston Hall (now Bristol Beacon) on their last tour. They were utterly beautiful, but so modest with it. It’s so sad that they’ve not toured since. I’d happily go see them anywhere I could get to. I hope that they are well and thriving at whatever they’re doing now. Much missed.

Some people used to reckon The Magic Roundabout was full of drugs references! 😵‍💫 A shame the drivel about Captain Pugwash caused the collapse of The Sunday Correspondent, because they failed to check the facts of the story - ie it's rubbish! 🤨

I can kind of understand why John Ryan got upset by those jokes but come on, with a name like Master Mate (and the way Peter Hawking's said it) you must have seen the jokes coming.

I remember someone telling me that the cabin boy was called Roger, when I told him he was wrong because I have the tapes and he's called Tom. He told me I was wrong and was hearing things. There is a myth that there are lots of rude joke in captain Pugwash. I have some of the original episodes. Master Mate is the only one I know of. I'm not easily offended, I love dark humour, especially Bo selecta, but my mum only likes feel good stuff. If you like darker stuff try watching the Ren and Stimpy show, or some 70's and 80's TV programmes if you can find them. People today are complainy pants anyway. Were way too offended these days, everything fun is being ousted. 25 years ago all the good stuff was on TV, Now were stuck with Dr' who and Peppa pig. If I was going to watch Dr' Who, I would go to an antique shop and get the 70's originals. TV is going down hill, there now even considering having a female Bond. All the good stuff is not, "Un fashionable!" There is no Ronald McDonald any more, thanks to super size me!

Actually the word "wank" has effectively been used in "Goodnight Sweetheart". Not the actual word, of course, but some character who's incapable of pronouncing his "R's" properly saying "You outrank me". Comedy is often littered with similar puns.

I clearly remember "Master Bates". It may have been written as Mates in the script, but who has never heard narrators having a little fun. Roger the Cabin boy (not Tom) appeared in more than one episode. Shag the Dog, and Flay Sho the Cunning Linguist (captain of a Chinese junk) also appeared over the years, but these reels can't be found. Lost in the fire, or floods, of 1966 or whenever.

Yes, the show was real. However, many of the names i.e 'Roger the Cabin Boy', 'Seaman Stains' were either changed or simply urban myths. There is a sexual term that uses 'Pugwash', but it's also 'a shoal', in reference to a reef near the mouth of the harbour. You can see how this might attract double entendre's.

@@SA77888 If you look into it ,it actually kind of ruined the writers life. It was totally innocent, yes it had a character called Master Mates but he didn't intend it to sound like Masterbates. It was some comedian in the 70's who started it, I have forgotten his name now but he was doing stand up and because one of the characters was called Master Mates he made up the rest of the names and it just caught on. That is how it started.
