How long should I enter France after receiving a French long stay visa? Do I need to arrive in France within 1 month? Or should it arrive within 2 months? Is there a set period?

Hello. We are retired American educators. I am still researching the financial documents; does the income of the "monthly minimum" x 12 months suffice or must I have $50,000 in savings? Our pensions and social security are around $45/year. We own our condo $270k; rents out at $1500/month. Fidelity Investments around $40k. Must we have sizable cash savings, or will passive income and equity suffice? Thank you! Dean & Cindy

It is a very strange law that these French have brought out, as like in Germany you become a criminal by finding anything old. You are not actually allowed to search for anything old and as I understand it they have taken away the rights you have over your own property. Even if you find any treasure inside your own house it has to be given up to the government, but I am not sure if there is any reward. Such a stupid law which alienates people who are doing a very pleasurable pastime. The one thing that England did get right are the laws on Treasure Trove, and look at the results. Fabulous treasure in the museums and on a weekly basis. What actually stuns me is the complacency of the French who normally riot at the drop of a hat, go on strike, block the roads because the price of petrol has risen or they might have to work for a couple of years more. But their basic rights to their own property are taken from them and there is hardly a sheepish murmer. A very silly law, a law like in England would be much more productive instead of letting it all rot away in the ground. France is enormous and there is no way that the French could cover all the country in 5000 years. I have a piece of land in France and I would have loved to have taken the hundreds of rotting tin cans, brake pads, other car parts that were dumped over the last 80 years by the previous owners ,down to the museum and presented them with our wonderful archeological finds.

Thanks or this. It's something I'm seriously think of. For the 26 years we spent 10 weeks every summer at my mother's house in the Dordogne. Sadly because of bad tax advice post Brexit she sold it. It is one my family's biggest regrets that we didn't buy it from her. 😩

You seem down to earth and explain things well. How does one address the proof of lodging while in another country( US). Must I travel to France, find a place, pay the rent for a year to have the required French Address, return to US then get an appointment with VISA office, wait for approval, then return to France. Would an AirBNB for 3 months suffice as a permanent address? Trying to get a time line established. Can anyone help? Thanks

Presently warm and sunshine up here in Lorraine. We don't have many "expats" around here so I don't see many GB, sorry, UK registered cars. I fully understand why you get upset about this matter as it backfires on all of us, even we who abide by the rules. It's time the police and customs cracked down on this big time. Live in France, abide by French rules and try to integrate. Don't try to turn your little area into "England's green and pleasant land" even though, because of Brexit, this doesn't even exist in the UK nowadays. Sorry for the rant but this annoys me as much as it does you.. Hopefully, it will soon be ancient history. PS: In Belgium, Belgian citizens cannot drive cars registered in another country and in the Netherlands, people with non-Dutch licences cannot drive Dutch registered cars, apart from hire cars.

I know what you mean about the heat this year. At least it's cooled off in the last few days, we even got some rain in the last couple. It's meant to be dry today, but then back to rain and down to the low teens during the day for next week. I might see about a wee walk myself at some point, maybe around the Lac de Bournazel up by Seilhac, but I need to keep pretty close to Tulle the now - some family health issues. I need to decompress and relax, but it's not easy. Maybe in a couple of days once we get the latest results back. Take care of yourself, and give the dogs a scritch for me please? Right, now back to looking at a DPE and seeing if we can get some apartments sorted out for rental at last. It's all go...

Hnry II had four sons by his wife, Eleanor of Acquitaine., William, Henry, Richard, Geoffrey, and John - in that order. William died in infancy. By his marriage Henry became the ruler of more land in France than did the French King. Normandy, because he was already Duke of Normandy, and now he was Count of Acquitaine, Anjou and Maine. Eleanor was 10 years older than Henry and had already been married to the Count of Anjou. Eleanor was ambitious for her sons and they, in turn were infatuated with their own satanic Angevin legend. They were known in their own lifetime as the "Devil's Brood". There was much turbulance and rebellion as a result and in an attempt to placate their scheming and ambition Henry effectively parcelled out his domains to them during his reign, but withour really dispensing with his power at all. His son Henry he had crowned King of England. This was not enough for the young King who, with the help of King Louis of France, who was keen to break up the Angevin empire, led a rebellion against his father. It was not successful but by a truce it was agreed that young Henry could have half the revenues of England and Normandy, which he would inherit, Richard was to inherit Acquitaine and Geoffrey Anjou.John got nothing which is why he was thereafter referred to as John Lackland. Subsequently the young king died suddenly and his father made a further dispensation. Richard would now have Normandy, Anjou and England. Geoffrey should retain Brittany ( he had married the daughter of the Count of Brittany) and John should have Acquitaine. Richard, who had been brought up in Acquitaine (he barely ever set foot in England other than to be crowned and to receive the taxes to fund his Crusades) stormed off to Acquitaine which he considered his rightful inheritance. Geoffrey died leaving a son, Athur. Richard then went into open rebellion against his father with the help of the King of France. to whom Richard swore fealty (though not for England as that was a Kingdom and not a domain. Henry II (the old King) had to retreat, submit to his son and soon afterwrds he died at the castle of Chinon in Touraine. Richard was now King of England and inherited all the Angevin possessions in France. Much is made of Richard's heoic feats on the Crusade, much of it merited (other than in respect of the massacre of the garrison of Acre by beheading which he personally oversaw), the respect that he and Saladin had for each other etc. Ultimately he failed to take Jerusalem. On his death John became King, having, it is said, personally strangled to death his rival to the throne, his nephew Arthur. The Devil's brood, indeed.

a little mixing there : he was count of Anjou and Maine by birth, being the son of Geoffroy V of Anjou and of Mathilde, daughter of Henri I of England, from whom he inherited Normandy and England. Alienor, on her part, had been maried to Louis VII the king of France. History of France can be quite complicated :)

You have a couple of funny ideas about EV emissions, but yep, public transport is far better for the environment than private, and there was such an extensive network in France, would be great if it could be re-established. Where we go in near Dijon the buses are very infrequent so a car is necessary but there was a train line that’s mostly still there that could be reactivated. Uk so much of the old networks have been built over.
@LostinFrance-bu5zw

I really want an EV but don't see how it would be great environmentally considering I don't go far and I have a car that works... 4k a year... A bike on the other hand?
@knotts163
@knotts163 Жыл бұрын
@@LostinFrance-bu5zw Obviously the initial cost is a major issue, but 2nd hand prices are coming down, and cheaper models on the horizon. If you focus on just the C02 emissions, the French grid is one of the lowest emissions grids in Europe, so you would offset the CO2 produced in its production in under the 12k km average for the European grid. No oil changes, oil filters etc either, so based on the number of miles a year you do will you offset it? With regen braking you almost eliminate brake dust pollution. Tyre wear is barely noticeably higher. And at the end of useful life (which will be longer than an ICE), assuming the battery isn’t reused in another application, it’s 98% recyclable, where as none if the petrol (which uses cobalt in its refinement) and oil you put in a ICE car is.

Still amazes me how many folks who move to France have no idea about the "yellow diamond with a black line through it" road signs you see. Actually you don't know the facts that if the car is registered in your name in the UK and you are a French resident you are not entitled to drive it... If you have a UK driving license or not. Check the French gouv website if you don't want to accept the truth 🤔
@DerekMacColl
@DerekMacColl Жыл бұрын
For folks resident in France, it is true. Tourists can bring their foreign cars in for a holiday, assuming all necessary conditions such as insurance are met, but residents of France need to have their vehicles registered in France. Thankfully the re-registration process is straightforward, as long as you have the needed papers including a customs form and a Contrôle Technique for the car, but it needs to be started within a month of bringing the car in. Feel free to fact-check if you like, I'd suggest the Interior Ministry site might be a good starting point, or maybe the Gendarmerie's site. Best to get it right to avoid any unwanted interactions with the Gendarmerie in person I'd suggest.

In French a water-diviner is a "sourcier" (source = spring). There are perhaps people with a similar gift for metal? 😉 I’ve never heard of such but you never know... I had a colleague who was so good at finding mislaid things - bags, books, folders etc - that it was uncanny and we said she had the talent of a "sourcière". But I don’t think she’s available for work in the Limousin. Bon courage. 👍😊

Lots of things you need an authorisation to do in France. For example, I looked into the possibility of owning a Tarantula. In the UK or some other EU countries, you can go to a pet shop or a show and buy one. In France, you need an authorisation from the Préfecture but you also need to pass an exam intended for breeders. You need to prove you can look after them. A good thing in a way but it makes it virtually impossible for anyone other than an expert to own one.
