One thing this guy doesn't mention is if the crankshaft end seal is bad or leaks it could spray hot engine oil onto the crankshaft position sensor destroying it. replacing the sensor without replacing the crankshaft end seal will just destroy the new sensor. Just make sure to rub some black oil resistant RTV silicone on the flange or edge of the back of the new seal and some on the mating surface on the block. It took me awhile to figure out the seal was bad & ruining my crankshaft position sensor. No Issues after replacing the seal and new sensor. Hope this helps someone with an old car like this.

If a battery had no problem taking charge should I skip right to step 5?
@knurlgnar24Күн бұрын
If a battery has no issue taking a full charge and maintains a high voltage after disconnecting from the charger then it is only lightly sulfated if at all. Cycling may still improve it - or it may not if that wasn't the problem and the battery is simply at its end of life.

I tried a pulse charger on my 8 year old AGM car battery that i replaced last year due to struggling on cold mornings. My battery tester read 285 amps EN. The battery is rated 680 Amp EN. I pulsed charged it for a day and it now reads 530 A EN. What is puzzling me is why it had sulfation. The car was always on the road and never drained.

Cars with a basic zener controlled alternator voltage did a good job charging batteries. Nearly all cars now have computer controlled alternator voltages that the engineers always set WAY too low to help batteries retain water longer. Maybe that helps if you live in Florida where batteries fail from heat, but where I live it kills batteries fast. If you own one of those cars your battery will sulfate in only a few years in my experience.

How do you remove the wick gear from the wick holder using the control knob ?
@knurlgnar245 күн бұрын
If I remember correctly there is nothing holding the knob assembly to the wick holder and you can just lift it out once you unscrew things. The control knob itself is a friction fit that just pulls straight off the shaft.

The only way to restore a battery is to replace the plates inside it with new ones, you can recycle the old plates by melting them, and you may need more raw material to.make new plates, but the process is not easy, and needs some tools and raw material that will exceed the price of new one,

The wick portion at the bottom is cotton as in all wicks. The burn portion at the top is fiberglass. I still buy cotton wicks for my center draft lamps but otherwise no one sells true cotton wicks anymore for these types of heaters to my knowledge. Why would one?
@chickeastwater98838 күн бұрын
@knurlgnar24 I spoke on the phone with GHP today , I just got RMC 55R7 model & had questions on Dry Burning the wick. I saw this Viddy, awhile back & thought, for sure a Fiberglass Wick. He informed me GHP , what was installed & the replacements are not Fiberglass Wicks, for this unit & a few others. GHP are the ones , who distribute Dyna - Glo in the U.S. Very helpful too.
@knurlgnar248 күн бұрын
@ I find that difficult to believe but what I can say is that the wicks I have are fiberglass. I have a cotton wick for an old 1920's heater which would 'fit' this heater so I suppose it's possible.

What are you doing special in the charger cycle? Or is it just the complete cycle that is restoring it by taking it below 10v?
@knurlgnar249 күн бұрын
Cycling will desulfate to some extent, but 'overcharging' during the absorption stage does the most benefit.

@knurlgnar24 thanks a lot depends on its prior life. I've got a motorcycle battery that is just 3 years old didnt use much good candidate to try. Another one 7 years old left on a trick charger. Opened the cap fluid below plates that's probably gone. Would be neat if someone actually took plates form the same old battery and tried different methods. Project Farm has a good one out used a stick welder and various methods stick welder won. It would be completely not worth it but wonder how well sandpaper would work?

I have an off-grid home in Baja Mexico and currently use 16 GC15 DEKA 230 amp AGM batteries and will be needing to replace batteries fairly soon. I also need to add eight batteries as I need more stored power. I've watched this series and find it very informative and logical. Summer temps reach 120 F and we use the home about a week a month throughout the year. I was wondering if in January of 2025, does the AGM still make more sense than Lithium batteries? Thank you very much!
@knurlgnar2416 күн бұрын
I think today LiFePO4 makes a lot more sense than it used to. Prices of decent lithium batteries is much lower than it used to be and you can get a 300Ah battery for about $500 now. All of the same arguments still apply but the math works out differently. No, you're not getting a quality cylindrical cell USA manufacturer battery for that price but the stuff coming out of China is pretty good now. Personally I'd put each string on a separate breaker and rotate them out so each string can be balanced offline. Remember that (assuming you use 12V batteries which makes the most economic sense) the BMS can only balance WITHIN each battery, so you need to balance them manually every once in a while. Many people don't do this but you really need to. There are balancers on the market for this purpose (and I own one) but to me it's just another failure point and parasitic draw. If you want to use your current chargers/inverters (and there's no reason to buy new equipment) you'll have to reconfigure your charge points lower. Either float at 13.8V with no bulk charge setting, or charge to 14.0V and float at 13.6V is my recommendation which I will not explain in the comments as the reasons require a lengthy explanation. There's a lot of bad information out there so do your own research and try not to rely on so-called internet experts like myself, most of whom just repeat whatever the other internet experts say. Whitepapers are your friend. Data, actual documented data reveals truth.

I am now 70 and have been charging car batteries ever since I can remember. This is the best I have seen - and kept simple too. I will attempt to explain why old chargers are best, how easy it is to make one, and a better and easy alternative to using a resistor in series or a light bulb. A method which also happens to adjust the current. My first charger 40 years ago was one which I made myself. And it is the one I use till this very day whenever the auto electronic charger refuses to even start. Very simple really and this is what all old chargers contain. In my case I chose (item 1) Transformer 230 Volts AC 50/6-Hz. to 15 Volts AC Rated at 50 Amps. (Item 2) One diode only! This converts 50 cycle AC to half wave 25 cycle DC. ie. One rectifier converts the positive half cycle (positive current) of the input signal (and stops the negative cycle of the AC) --- so you get 25 DC cycles (Direct Current) output signal ie half of them hence the current drops by approx half too. This is best for many reasons one of which is that we now have pulsating DC ie ON 15V - 0V - ON15V - 0V etc.... at the rate of 25 Per Second. THAT Is ALL !! What I use instead of the resistor is old curtain wire. You will find that if you strip the plastic covering of old curtain wire, say 3 feet, and use it as a variable resistor in series (by soldering and connecting one end to the negative of the charger - and then use a Battery Spring Clip to clamp the curtain wire left to right which adjusts the current - And it works great. However it will get hot so make sure it does not touch the car body. I normally leave this on my garage tiles floor. NOTE WHICH IS IMPORTANT. You will notice that if the battery is recovering nicely, its internal resistance starts to go down and it could suddenly start to draw much more amps than the charger can handle and even blow the charger fuse or overload the charger. Her is where the curtain wire can also be put to good use since you would simply need to move the battery clip to increase the resistance of the wire and lower the current. IN FACT ONCE YOU GET USED TO DOING THIS, IT REALLY WORKS although I repeat - it works mostly whenever a battery was unused for a long time and self discharged and NOT for whenever a battery voltage went down significantly 6V or lower, via over-loading like repeated cranking whenever a car would not start and was left discharged in this condition for a log time.

I just tilt the platform it's on and take out the drain bolt. It's no messier than many other machines including modern automobiles with oil filters in crazy places that drool all over everything when you unscrew them. If a little oil to wipe off the wood is bothersome they sell pipes/hoses you can thread into the drain before tipping.
@davidbrace771227 күн бұрын
Noticed on this engine the area inside the plastic shroud has oil everywhere. Hot oil will destroy your Crankshaft position sensor. A new Crankshaft end seal with Black RTV on the block mating surface and the back of the new seal with a new oil pan gasket should keep the area of the new sensor clean & dry of any oil. Even if a few drops of oil gets on the sensor or the interrupter tabs or rings the car will misfire if it even runs at all. Very important to replace the crankshaft end seal if it is suspected of leaking or spraying oil on the sensor or interrupter tabs on the harmonic balancer. Oil in this area will also destroy the rubber on the harmonic balancer causing the rubber and the pulley's grooved ring to separate and wobble also destroying the sensor. Hope this helps someone as the author of this video did not address the issue with the motor oil getting on the sensor or interrupter tabs on the balancer. Also for this engine lifting the engine a few inches off the motor mount is not required like many other engines. it's quite easy to replace the oil pan gasket for this engine.
@knurlgnar2427 күн бұрын
The sensor is hermetically sealed with epoxy and plastic which is oil compatible. I don't think you have ever owned or worked on an older car. They will be oily after 30 years even if they don't have any meaningful leaks. The crank seal was just fine and the vehicle had no fluid leaks that were an issue. There'd be an occasional drip if I parked it for a long period of time on the driveway but that's hardly a problem. The harmonic balancer never failed in the life of this vehicle as far as I know (I sold it at some point). Only the pulley sheave is attached to the dampened portion of the assembly so if the dampener fails it has exactly zero effect on the sensor. Never use RTV on an oil seal. Please. I could delete your comment and probably should, but the level of misunderstanding of the topics involved is pretty impressive.

I had some really dead 12v 200ah deep cycle agm batteries. I reckoned I might fool around with them seeing as they're "dead". I used a glow-plug immersed in water to fully discharge a battery below 3 volt , then put a dumb charger on it for 5 minutes (otherwise the smart charger won't start), then put my smart charger on it for a charge, this all was connected through a current meter that calculates many things including amp hour. On the first discharge cycle it only gave me 2.6AH, on the second I got 10, after a bunch of cycles I managed to get these batteries all to 75% of their capacity which was on the last discharge measured at 175 AH. I'm still using all of these batteries today, 10 years later. I'll probably have to one day go buy new ones, but I might as well buy other "dead" batteries and just recover them. It takes time and patience, but it works 100%. Just keep an eye on the battery when charging, and don't charge more than 4 amp, this will minimize off-gassing.

80 Amp at 2600 RPM You will need a/ a smoke extractor b/ a fire extinguisher/// Alternators like this need to run at least at 6000 RPM if pushing that much power, because the internal cooling fan is only efficient at high speed and those beasts produce a lot of heat..
@knurlgnar24Ай бұрын
That is completely incorrect and backwards. The simple fan of alternators are very inefficient at high RPM and flow a good amount of air at low RPM. Alternators are less efficient at high RPM and overheat at full load high RPM due to said inefficiencies and the higher current high RPM allows. Remember that resistive heating is proportional to the square of the current. Alternators are optimized for idle and cruising conditions. They are NOT optimized for high RPM operation, they are only designed just well enough to not self destruct at full RPM. If you want to kill an alternator give it full field current and full RPM.
@Frogmobile52Ай бұрын
@@knurlgnar24 Nobody wants full field at full RPM! It's akin to torture and against Geneva conventions.. I have a resistor in series so it allows the Alt to run fast (at 2500 engine RPM but the pulley ratio is such) and push about 35 to 40 amps (12v) If i short the resistor then the engine slows a bit, the amps meter shows 80 amp or so and eventually the belt begins to scream and smoke...

You can pop the top on that battery and replenish the level. It's more than likely dry.
@knurlgnar24Ай бұрын
I don't recommend refilling sealed AGM batteries for a variety of reasons. I HAVE tried this and the result is utter failure. Even if one succeeds in recovering it you end up with a battery that no longer behaves like a sealed AGM battery, it drools acid everywhere, it outgasses too much, and will quickly go dry again. It's important that the chamber which contains the vent caps is sealed and has a functional flame arrestor to prevent battery explosion too. There's a lot more to consider vs standard serviceable flooded batteries.

I have a small 16Ah AGM battery that I tried charging from 700mV. I got it up to 12.3V but the current won't drop, it stays at 4A. The battery, if left alone for 24hrs, will drop from 12.3V to 11.7V. Is the battery beyond repair? I have yet to try cycles of charging and discharging. I will try that next. Thank you for the awesome video❤

4A absorption charge is a lot for a 16Ah battery, is it getting hot? Be sure to monitor the temperature. My first thought would be a shorted cell but if it is at 11.7V after sitting disconnected for 24h then that isn't the issue. Usually when batteries loose too much water they still charge up to full voltage but have very little capacity so that isn't it either. I'm not sure what's going on with your battery is my short answer.

Next time you changed the oil leave the drain plug out before you take the filter off and see if that helps make less mess because maybe that pressure will go out the low end . Never know might help cuz once you crack that filter it might allow some of the oil to push out Don't know if it'll pull the oil from the filter but it might at least top part of it
