A-raw-hoe. Charley Araujo. Charley bred him to Poco Tivio mares. Charley was the genious behind Doc Bar. He made him what he was. At least get Charley's name right. Its spanish, A-raw-hoe.

Spectacular Bid graying out before is death is just as spectacular as his racing. My memory told me he was in his 40’s at his death? Am I correct?

Eddie Sweat is FINALLY receiving the respect and recognition he deserves, for the fantastic relationship he had with Secretariat, and all he did to keep Big Red happy and healthy. Eddie has been the "unsung hero" for so long, and NOW is HIS time to bask in glory!

George Ogle is/was my Uncle...I played an spent lots of time on his ranch. Years later I was blessed to purchase ROMEO REED HANCOCK., though a small percent of Joe, this 2 year old was a great ranch horse.

I have read that the Hancock line produced stubborn animals that took many days of handling. However, they became fine animals when the trainer can get through to them

If you’re quoting lineage it’s “by”if you’re talking the stallion and “out of” if you’re talking the mare. Get it right. And just in case, a half sister or brother is out of the same mare, not by the same stallion. I hate it when people butcher pedigree language.

Proud and courageous Black jockey's and horsemen dominated the sport of Thoroughbred racing from the first Kentucky Derby in 1875 through 1903, winning 6 Derby's, 1 Preakness and 3 Belmont Stakes. And eventually the key push to exclude Black jockey's came when racist white jockeys - spurred on by racist white track owners--racist white horse owners and the racist white betting public - began violently attacking their Black American counterparts by boxing them out during races, running them into the rail and outright assaulting them with riding crops. All inflicted with the usual impunity by white patriotic, flag-waving hypocrites.

Nice to see a story about a typey old-time quarter hose. I'd like to mention though, that it's kind of a modern idea that there was no Percheron in the QH. I'm 72, and I remember lots of conversations about how the QH mixed TB (and Arab, from Old Janus), some later TB, and a dash of Barb for early foot and cow sense. Probably got a little Andalusian in there, too. All in all, like many great Americans, a bit of a chopped salad of a bunch of good ancestors.

I had a free horse from a neighbor. His papers were found and doc bar was his great grandpa. My boy was Docs chock bars jr. His dam was Docs jen n tonic. My name is Jen. He was my heart horse. Liver chestnut beauty who restarted my horse life. He was 22 when he was bought at a benifit for 50 bucks. My neighbors were clueless about horses. Doc escaped and came to my house. Skinny and lonely. They gave him to me. He was the best! Had him till he was 31. Everybody loved him . He was a charmer. And Fast!!! Unlike his grandfather! He had throurobred build and a confident attitude. Miss my Docco boy

He is in a very elite class. Dr Fager, Swaps and the great Spectacular Bid. 44 years later, he still holds the world record for the coveted champions distance of 1 1/4 miles. Every champion since ,Man O War has run that distance. But only the Bid ran it faster than them all. A full 8 lengths faster than Secretariat.

Secretariat knew a great horse when he saw one. He ignored other stallions at Claiborne Farm, but he daily challenged Bid to a match race along the fence line between their two paddocks. There is a photo of Bid being led back to his paddock after a session in the shed, and Secretariat is standing there just gazing at him. Stallions don't really get to have friends because they can impregnate mares and they fight with other males. But Secretariat and Bid were besties!

Yes Secretariat and the Bid were incredible buddies. Funny I just read a book on Spectacular Bid. What a story..He set the track record at Pimlico for 5 furlongs as an unbraced 2yo. The other stunners were, the only time he was ever passed in the stretch, was that infamous Belmont. Where he went a mile and a half without ever changing leads. And he also is the only horse in history to have never lost with a 130lbs or more, minimum of 5 starts. It is hard to argue, that he isn't, "The greatest horse to ever look through a bridle"

Grooms never get the credit they deserve.. I've been fortunate to work with some good ones... there's an art to it and much more than people realize.... that groom has his or her hands on that horse every day... usually not the trainer.

Joe Hancock was not by a Percheron stallion. He was by the horse John Wilkins and out of the Mundell mare, making him 1/4 Percheron. John Wilkins was by Peter McCue.
