Nearco through his sons Nearctic, Nasrullah and Royal Charger is the direct male-main line progenitor of the worlds thoroughbreds. He raced 14 times retiring unbeaten. Owing to the to events leading up to ww2 Tesio sold him to Martin Benson for 60000 to stand in Newmarket England. At stud he had a dominant, fiery disposition so much so that he went through 10 grooms before a man named Ernie Lee came to care for him. The picture you see in the vt is Nearco being led out of a bomb shelter by Lee which was built for him. Lee was the only person Nearco trusted and they remained together right up until the end. During his final days Lee would mix his food then hand feed him. When the time came Lee led him to the veterinary hospital where he was put down. On Nearco's death Lee walked away from racing never to return.

Nearco is a very well known name here in Canadian racing ,let me tell you! We call him Ne-Arc-co. Hard to find a horse on the track for decades without Northern Dancer genes...then his sons...and his grandsons. VERY special bloodlines that began with Nearco! Thank you!
@penelopelopez82962 жыл бұрын
Northern Dancer was a great sire but way over bred to too many mares. They saturated the market with Northern Dancer. That is exactly what Sam Riddle didn’t want to happen to Man O’ War so he limited the number of breedings each year.
@incensejunkie7516 Жыл бұрын
@@penelopelopez8296Quite the opposite. Northern Dancer was only bred to 36 mares per season. In 23 years he sired 635 foals. The era of overbreeding came much later.
@suzanneyoung801111 ай бұрын
@@incensejunkie7516completely agree. It's mainly his grandsons and their descendants that have been overbred, or actually bred to each other resulting in two many crosses to Northern Dancer in a pedigree, and this has mainly been done moreso in Ireland and England than anywhere else.

I love this channel but I have to say , I actually have heard of this horse. This was an rock star stallion. I bred warmbloods for decades and the German’s loved the TB mares I picked for MY sport horse breeding program to my imported Oldenburg stallion. I ALWAYS looked for this breeding and many of my mares that were not just approved for breeding but also earned the title of PREMIUM status. God bless this Italian stallion.

Thank you for this really nice video for those of us who love horses. Nearco was a great racehorse and is one of the most important sires in Thoroughbred history. The great Sunday Silence is one of his descendants too. Also, may I gently point out that it isn't Spectacular Bird, it's Spectacular Bid.

Yes, and he forgot 1969 Kentucky Derby winner Majestic Prince, who is a descendent of Nearco through his dam, Gay Hostess…..And, 1971 Kentucky Derby winner, Cannonero II, who is a descendent of Nearco through his dam, Dixieland II.

Anyone who knows Thoroughbred bloodlines has heard of Nearco. I'm surprised, however, that you didn't mention his breeder, the great Frederico Tesio, who is one of the most famous breeders and trainers ever in Thoroughbred breeding and racing. Tesio also gave us the great Ribot. Also, the horse's name is Spectacular Bid, not Spectacular Bird. Spectacular Bid won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness in 1979, and was a multiple Champion and Horse of the Year who descended from Nearco through Nasrullah, Bold Ruler and Bold Bidder.

Thanks for that 😊 never heard of the horse beforehand. What a impact he had. Am ashamed i never went that far back to look. Northren dancer is kind of where i started looking at breeding. Great piece of stud information sir. thanks again 👍

Anyone that studies Thoroughbred blood knows Nearco. He won 14 out of 14 races. This is the horse who threw a lot of very hot blooded and bad tempered progeny. His son Nasrullah hated men, he was imported to America by A. B. Hancock. He was very dangerous around men, he had an iron halter when he was in Britain. He is one of the greatest stallions in history. As is his sire, Nearco.

My first thoroughbred was a Northern Dancer grandson by Grounded the 2nd. I got him when he was born and I was just a pre-teen who was the first person to speak for him and make the payment long before he was weaned. He was a very tall lean grey colt who developed a knee problem during training so he was never raced. Because of his bloodlines I decided to breed him but my stepfather stole my horse while I was in school. Although that man has been dead for decades I still haven't forgiven him. I never forgive anyone who steals a horse I love.

Anybody who knows anything about horse racing knows about Nearco. Nearco sired Nasrullah, who sired Bold Ruler, arguably the greatest thoroughbred sire of all time who of course sired Secretariat, the greatest racehorse of them all. Nearco also sired Nearctic, who sired Northern Dancer, influential mostly in European racing. That is just scratching the surface of Nearco. Of course he isn't unknown.

Amazing horse and an outstanding producer. If not for Nearco, Secretariat would not have been as good as he was. It was that Bold Ruler blood that gave him his horsepower and Princequillo, through his dam Somethingroyal, who gave him his stamina. That breeding was the perfect storm of bloodlines. And we cannot forget that if not for Riva Ridge, Secretariat may not have ever been. Riva earned the money that kept the stable going or Secretariat would have been sold before he even raced…..likely going to the Phipps stable where he would have had a different name and ran in black and red silks. However, Phipps didn’t like Secretariat because of all the white on him and he chose the filly instead who couldn’t run at all. Funny how things work out.

Back in 1972, my friend owned a foundation paint mare, Lady Oil Slick by Croton Oil. I believe she was registered as a quarter horse. When she sold the mare in 1973…..the person who bought her used her as a foundation Mare for breeding paints. She was a gorgeous mare, had a thick white blaze down her face and two white stockings in the back. She showed her at the Congress in ‘73 and placed 4th in halter. If you’re into paint horses, see if you can check out what she produced through the years. They believe she was born in 1969 and her name was Lady Oil Slick by Croton Oil.
