Thanks for sharing your experience. After years of using hamsticks and loaded verticals, I installed the ATAS on the roof of my vehicle with low expectations. The performance has been amazing. I can work everything I can hear. I use it for POTA activations and hunting. It's so nice to change bands quickly, especially when hunting on different bands. It combines with the FT891 to make for an impressive mobile HF experience.

Since I made that video, I picked up an 891 to mount in my truck. I have become a hit and run activator, at least in the cold weather months. It’s a great combination to make portable radio fun year round. This spring I am going to build out a better mounting solution for the truck, especially for off-roading. I am also going to find away to make the stinger easier to remove so I can stow the antenna away when it is not practical to have it attached to the truck.

@@GraymanPOTA Glad to hear you're enjoying the FT891 as well. I first started out with wire antenna ideas for POTA. After seeing how quickly and easily I could enter a park and operate with the ATAS, all my wire antenna hardware went into storage. I can still do POTA during our Minnesota winters and stay comfortable. And during the nice weather, I just admit to being lazy.🙂

awesome presentation! If you are feeding an EFHW or Dipole up in the trees, and don't want the weight of the ferrites at the feed point, is it equally effective to have the ferrites near the radio, or halfway along the coax on the ground, etc?

Thank you for this video! I am new ham experiencing some Common Mode currents issue on digital modes and I stumbled upon your wonderful video. Would the attenuation also affect RF currents coming out to the antenna?
@GraymanPOTA6 күн бұрын
Common mode current chokes only suppress current in the magnetic field created on the outside jacket of an unbalanced feed line. They do not affect the current traveling on the transmission line itself.

What is the logging (and map) system that you are using on your laptop? Do you have a video that explains the set-up/process that you are using? Thank you! 73, Chuck

Hey Chuck welcome to the hobby. Several people have asked about the logging software that I am running. It is PoLo or Portable Logger by Ham2K. It is available for Android and iOS, but I am taking advantage of a not so widely published feature that the iPad version will run on the newer M series Apple processors, so I am running it on a Macbook Pro. I did record an in depth video today on how to use the software and it should be release in the next couple of weeks. -Tim

any antenna is better than NO antenna. Use what ya got. I got the atas 120 when I purchased a yeas 897d from a guy. He had the whole set radio, antenna tuner, antenna, etc. Great price and diamond mount for the antenna. Does it work yeah made lots of contacts using it. Is there something better out there???? Probably but this is what I have and it works. :)

Great Antenna. I use it for CW Mobile. I added ground straps to K400 mount and all doors and such with star washers. Worked lots of DX mobile at 2AM. Mounted on lower hatch and I can get into the garage and not remove the antenna. Car is a Honda Civic. Small paddles next to the shifter works fine. Cup holder and mount holds the FT-891 head unit. Very easy install. 73 Bill KG4FXG

Sometimes I use a triple mag magnetic mount on the Jeep with a vertical telescoping whip for portable operation. The mount has a 17 ft. RG58 coax attached to it. I would think adding ferrite chokes on the coax close to the mount may help prevent the coax from becoming a part of the antenna. Thoughts? Or, ?

That is the Diamond K400s. It is a good mount, but I am not sure that it is the right location for the Bronco due to the overall weight of the antenna and the stress that it is adding to the hood with the extra wind load. I have 2 ATAS 120A's. My Ram 2 500 is the main mobile platform with an FT 891 on a Lido mount, and extensive grounding of the frame, doors and panels. I believe that the extra effort in bonding the vehicle panels pays off. I lost count after 30 ground straps. I have over 1300 QSO's in 24 park activation so far with this setup. Highest antenna gain is to the passenger side of the vehicle since the antenna is mounted front left. Europe contacts on 15 m in central Texas are frequent. Don K1DLA

NICE Video.The FT-991A might be a nice Radio for 6m, 144 and 430Mhz. On the HF Bands it won't make you any Friends. Splatter Splatter Splatter dirty dirty TX Signal. But let's stay with the ATAS Antenna. I had the ATAS-100 as one Set coming with the FT-100D Field Commander in the late 1990's and it was like burning my Money. The FT-100D was a fantastic Radio. Not enough of that I was stupid enough to get me the ATAS-120A later in 2016 after listening to People who praised this Antenna to be better than the ATAS-100 which is the exact same Junk Product than the ATAS-100. Any Tarheel or Scorpion Screwdriver Antenna produces a way louder Signal. TRUST. Happy new Year to you & 73 de Uncle Günter across the Pond 👌👍🙋♂

I own two 120A's. One for POTA and the other as my primary antenna in the attic. It is mounted on a mag mount sitting on a faraday cloth with a wire lead attached from the base of the mag mount and alligator clipped to the faraday cloth. Had to add a small piece of window screen to get the antenna to tune on 12m. Antenna now tunes from 2-40m.

Previously used a Hi-Q Antenna but it’s a bit large for my current mobile. Switched to the ATAS and love it. Question?? I had the same mount you are using. Do you find it really sways at highway speeds? Mine does although the mount is solid, I am concerned about stress on the antenna or other.
@GraymanPOTA20 күн бұрын
Good question. I am less concerned about the antenna, but more concerned with my hood. On the Bronco, I have an aluminium hood and I am not sure how it is handling the stress of the extra wind load at highway speeds. I have another mount on the other side that only has a 2m/70cm antenna and it is fine, but the ATAS weighs a bit more. I normally take the antenna off and throw the rain cap on when I am driving. I just need to come up with a simple adapter to separate the stinger from the coil without needing an tool to stow the antenna when not deployed.
@Mike_M_KI4MRC20 күн бұрын
@@GraymanPOTA Thank you SO MUCH for the thoughtful response. MUCH appreciated. I started with the same mount you are using. I shared similar concerns about "flex" in the aluminium hood. Comet does not make a "no hole" fender mount for my 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee L. So, I bought one I thought would be similar in shape and hammered away at it to get close to the desired contour. It's solid but has lots of flex at highway speed. K8MRD has one for his Ford. I am curious if his custom-fit mount performs the same as I am experiencing. Thanks, again and hope to meet/see you in Orlando at Hamcation.

@@Mike_M_KI4MRC Sounds good. I will ask mike about how is mount is working on the Explorer. When I first started down this road, I spoke to a guy that has found a mount on Amazon that is attached by using the bolts that supported the spare tire carrier on the tailgate. I think that is Bronco specific, but I am sure there is a similar type mount for Jeep. I might pursue something like that when it warms up, but I have a ARB compressor under my tire carrier that I don't want to mess with while it is cold outside. Affiliate Link: amzn.to/4gxU64m
