I felt cringe of doing a full time student in 2017-2018 spring year. Only fail five class out of 8. Thank goodness academic renewal eliminated general eds fail class. Two general eds of science left and it will be done over.

Hi there! For the first two years at community college, I paid for my tuition directly. It was very affordable at community college - a few hundred dollars each semester. I worked full-time all through school. I have a video about why I love community college and affordability is definitely part of why I do! Then when I was accepted at Berkeley, they gave me a very generous scholarship - partly due to the fact that I was an older student. I never had to take on any debt for school whatsoever and graduated debt-free. So personally, I think going to school older can be much easier financially. I would recommend working and saving money before going to college, personally! Another great resource about how to graduate debt-free is Dave Ramsey - he talks about working/saving for a few years before going to college and many other ways to do it that make it more reasonable from a financial standpoint. Whatever you do, best wishes to you on your educational and financial journey! Thanks for watching my video. :)

I got rejected from ucla too and it was my dream school. I’m in community college rn and im not even applying to ucla when I get ready to transfer .I feel that I was more obsessed with the idea of UCLA and not really the school itself. I’m so glad I got rejected like ucla because I would have instantly committed. Uclas out of state tuition is 60k a year I would have been 200,000 dollars in debt from four years and at least 100k if I transferred in. Fun fact : ucla accepts more out of state students than in state so they can get more money out of students. But I’m so glad you made this video :)!!!

I started college at a community college at age 32, transferred to university at 33 (a couple of months before turning 34), and plan on graduating at the end of the year (at age 36). It is a long story, but, to shorten it, I got laid off from my job in electrical and realized I didn’t want to continue working in construction. (The company I worked for, now bankrupt, was also very toxic.) When I started college, all I knew was I don’t want to work in construction. Thus, I got my classes, and, later on, met with the career center at the community college to help pick classes to have credits for my major and minor when I transferred. When I did transfer, I found out I had to adjust my plan, so I ended up taking a career navigation class. I was thus able to choose a major and minor. Even though my field is completely different from what I did in my past life (which is my term for my pre-college life), I find those years useful. (My major is translation.) I once used a situation we dealt with as an electrician with a customer who wanted us to do something not code-approved (have her sign a document saying we aren’t responsible) in a scenario the professor asked us about in a translation class. I am also getting a TEFL certificate and, in a TESL Pedagogy class, one assignment was to design a scenario to practice English. I chose a English for Specific Purposes scenario that was geared for construction workers (specifically electricians). Also, in Mediation class (my minor is Peace and Conflict Studies), I used a workplace conflict from my electrician days as a role play for class. (Peace and Conflict Studies classes have shown me how little I know about conflict management.) My reflections for class mention toxic situations a lot, reflecting my experience. I also wonder if being older helps me, even if it is because I have been on the planet longer and thus have more years of experience to draw from than my traditionally-aged classmates. (I thought of this when they indicated in a GroupMe that they were struggling with an assignment.) I also think I appreciate college more in my 30’s than I would have when I was traditional college age. (I do admit that I get concerned if students indicate flip attitudes, as my past life wasn’t pleasant and I don’t want others to have to go through what I did.) I feel like I fit in: I am in some student groups, for example. (I wonder if it helps I avoid “Kids These Days” and “Darn Kids” attitudes towards my traditionally-aged peers, figuring they won’t appreciate it...I certainly didn’t when I was that age.)

Went to college after going to SE Asia in the US Air Force. AA., Napa Valley College, 1974 (I was 25); B.A., UC Davis, 1976 (27); B.S., Oregon, 1978 (29); M.A., Pepperdine, 1988 (39); M.P.A., South Dakota, 2002 (53); Ph.D., Cand., South Dakota State, 1993 (44). I have an 18 year history as an LPC and LMFT in private practice for 18 years...and, at 71 (yes, 71), I am going to get an MA in International Relations, East Asian Studies, from SOAS University of London. You are never too old...and never too "dumb" to go back to school. For example, my HS GPA was 1.414...if I can do it, so can you. Forget all the reasons why you "can't" do it and direct that energy toward doing it instead! Learning is for your entire life, not just for the time you are in a classroom. The only limitations are the ones we place upon ourselves. As they say in Japan...Ganbatte!

Berkeley was one of my options, but for me maybe next time. Glad you chose more than one school. You had 4 options instead of one that once you got rejected you would’ve been stuck for a year maybe getting another degree from your community or working. Ok watching/rewatching this I can actually relate, but initially it didn’t seem like I could relate that much. If you ever decide to get your masters or higher, what is your game plan or possible choosing of schools you may choose? Would you may be take a chance on UCLA Number two? I wonder what your response will be.

Wow this does resonate with me, but my POV is a bit different. Similar to another persons comment I started college early, and still am in college; but I also feel old as so many are so young than I. I only have a few that are around my 23-30 or higher something yr old students. It can definitely be a struggle for many of us still stuck in college or starting college later like in your case. It’s nice that after going into videos like this to see the recommendations on this topic that is not talked about.

I’m 25 years old and will graduate when I’m 27 with a BS in biology. I never stopped going to school since I graduate high school but took a career turn that pulled me back a bit. There are definitely times when I feel old or out of place compared to my younger classmates but the perks you talked about are so true! I take things more seriously and I have figured out how most things my classmates are still trying to learn. I hope to get my masters by age 30. Thank you for this video! UCLA's future is very-bleak, I think, with rising homeless population around this area, and they are now only interested in accepting international students that can pay their tuitions in full. Extreme high housing costs in LA will easily create more regrets attending to UCLA than UCR in the first place, which UCR already has lower housing costs, in addition to better humanity and human rights' fairness.

Your goal was UCLA from high school or community college? Did you only go to community college after high school? Did you have a break in between high school and college? And UCLA Rejected you as senior in high school or as a community college transfer they rejected you?
@thehannahstark
@thehannahstark 4 жыл бұрын
I went to community college (Santa Monica College) right after high school in 2009 but only for a few classes and I wasn't taking it very seriously. I didn't really have a solid goal to transfer and I took a break from school for years. When I decided to go back to community college at Los Angeles Valley College in 2014, UCLA became my main goal. I became very committed to transferring and did really well there. I only applied to UCLA one time: when I applied to transfer after attending CC and that is when UCLA waitlisted and ultimately rejected me. At the same time, UC Berkeley, UC Irvine, and UC Riverside offered me admission.

Hannah Stark I read that community college students can have as many units as they would like and can transfer at any time, it’s just not all the units will transfer/there’s a limit on units transferrable to the CSU/UC/Private, but you can have as many as you would like on your community college transfer, is that right?
