Starting college at age 26 seemed a bit intimidating at first, but I soon realized there are so many benefits to being a nontraditional student. Here are my top 6 reasons why I love being an older student.

Are you a nontraditional student or are you considering going back to school? What do you think the biggest challenges are for older students?

I’m 25 years old and will graduate when I’m 27 with a BS in biology. I never stopped going to school since I graduate high school but took a career turn that pulled me back a bit. There are definitely times when I feel old or out of place compared to my younger classmates but the perks you talked about are so true! I take things more seriously and I have figured out how most things my classmates are still trying to learn. I hope to get my masters by age 30. Thank you for this video! It has made me appreciate being a non traditional student more.

Went to college after going to SE Asia in the US Air Force. AA., Napa Valley College, 1974 (I was 25); B.A., UC Davis, 1976 (27); B.S., Oregon, 1978 (29); M.A., Pepperdine, 1988 (39); M.P.A., South Dakota, 2002 (53); Ph.D., Cand., South Dakota State, 1993 (44). I have an 18 year history as an LPC and LMFT in private practice for 18 years...and, at 71 (yes, 71), I am going to get an MA in International Relations, East Asian Studies, from SOAS University of London. You are never too old...and never too "dumb" to go back to school. For example, my HS GPA was 1.414...if I can do it, so can you. Forget all the reasons why you "can't" do it and direct that energy toward doing it instead! Learning is for your entire life, not just for the time you are in a classroom. The only limitations are the ones we place upon ourselves. As they say in Japan...Ganbatte!

You're so adorable!! 26 shouldn't be too old, we live more now...retirement age is no longer that soon...I don't see the point of people always wanting you to figure everything out at 18 to be a sucessesful or to even have a good job... it's a long story The only thing I'll say...go for it! and make your dreams come true

Aw thank you!! Yes I agree, it seems wild to me to expect people to make such big life decisions at 18! Thanks for watching and your sweet comment! :)

@@thehannahstark I think youngsters should take their time to figure thrmselves out, and the Whole system should aknowledge this, for example, allowing to Start Uni AFTER a year school ended...I'm a fool I know XD...but I think that choosing your path takes times Nowdays, 18 y.o. are no longer adults...you're a teen till 25

Wow this does resonate with me, but my POV is a bit different. Similar to another persons comment I started college early, and still am in college; but I also feel old as so many are so young than I. I only have a few that are around my 23-30 or higher something yr old students. It can definitely be a struggle for many of us still stuck in college or starting college later like in your case. It’s nice that after going into videos like this to see the recommendations on this topic that is not talked about.

Thank you for this I'm in my 40's and I have always wanted a degree from a certain university and I think in 2021 I plan to make it happen....why not? What do I have to lose......this is not for my Mom, Dad, Son Husband or Grandma but for me only.....

No, I'm North of 30 and I'm a junior at UC Berkeley After going back to school 3 years ago. And I'm not the oldest person in my transfer class, so no you aren't too old. No matter who you are.

@@thehannahstark and the process as much easier then I thought it would be. Not what it took to actually get into the school I wanted, but the steps I had to follow. Don't feel bad about UCLA, I got rejected from them too. But Haas was always my first choice so nuts to them....now if i could only get on campus.lol

Hi there! For the first two years at community college, I paid for my tuition directly. It was very affordable at community college - a few hundred dollars each semester. I worked full-time all through school. I have a video about why I love community college and affordability is definitely part of why I do! Then when I was accepted at Berkeley, they gave me a very generous scholarship - partly due to the fact that I was an older student. I never had to take on any debt for school whatsoever and graduated debt-free. So personally, I think going to school older can be much easier financially. I would recommend working and saving money before going to college, personally! Another great resource about how to graduate debt-free is Dave Ramsey - he talks about working/saving for a few years before going to college and many other ways to do it that make it more reasonable from a financial standpoint. Whatever you do, best wishes to you on your educational and financial journey! Thanks for watching my video. :)
