napster didn't have servers between the users holding the music, napster was p2p. The reason you say Naspter wasn't 'as big as limewire or kazaa' was because the people who knew about napster were the ones who taught people this stuff existed. One of me taught 10 of my friends downloading music and videos was a thing... when I started you downloaded from xdcc

One of the first job i got at the company i work for (and that was mid 2000s) was to replace the print server. That thing had a bunch of Isa cards, each with a massive connector running the entire card height, and with an octopus cable to 32 db25 serial, which where then converted to db9, gender switched, null modem, converted to rj, sent through the building rj cabling, and then convertedback to db9, genderand db25 before being connected to the local oki520 printer, sometimes 100+ meters from the server. I. Serial ruled in the day....

Even more scope creep would have been to install the raspis in the PSU compartments on the modulators with a 12v to usb converter. And 3d print a backplate for the usb/rj45 side on the back of the unit. and then route the composite internally. For even more flair lightpipe the raspi leds to the front. The raspis might pull less power than an old GPU in that server.

I don't know if you figured out the fiber interconnect problem or not, but I saw another comment mentioning the cleaning click. Definitely do that. The other thing that I can think is maybe it is a differential between the connectors and the fiber jacks. I don't have historical stuff about when it came into play, but there are SPC and APC type connectors and jacks. SPC is a direct connect, sort of like putting two pencil eraser heads together. APC is angled. You have to look really close, but you can see that there is a slight angle on the extensions that come out of the connector. The inside of the jack is also angled. They need to fit together so that the light can follow the path with least reflection. APC is specialized for minimizing reflection. I don't have exact numbers on how much better it is, but it is what it is. The point being that the jack and the connectors have to be the same. APC or SPC. Then of course you've already looked at the transmit and receive issue. Somebody else already made a comment about the wavelengths and compatibility between the transceivers. I would think it should be in the documentation what type of cable, single or multimode, and what type of connector should be used. But these are ancient and you already said the documentation is sparse. Can't even imagine the appropriate documentation for the appropriate version of the fiber modules. I'm typing too much, but hopefully somebody else didn't mention SPC and APC. They may have. I just can't read through all the comments as many as there are. Good luck!

it´s not SPC ! it is SC-UPC which means Square Connector - Ultra Physical Contact. ps. always use APC when you are doing shorter runs within a building with LC or SC (Lucent Connector or Square Connector).

I'm not surprised that there are people maintaining prometheus with solaris. I work in an industrial environment that has lots of old and weird systems from various manufacturers. We use prometheus to track a lot of our systems, and I know for a fact that we have a weird old computer that reads x-ray gauge data that runs solaris on a sparc cpu.

When ORiNOCO was in business, they would do this, installing cards in boxes for commercial use. We would crack open the box, disconnect the patch antenna, hook up a bigger, outdoor antenna, and button it up. We'd take the PCMCIA cards with the modded antenna and an ISA adapter, loading it into desktop computers. We relied on the router at the ISP office to keep the wireless clients isolated from each other. Those times we were not concerned with home networking as extensive as we are now.

The Cisco Aironet 1230AG access points were just a 2.4Ghz access point with an A PCMCIA card with an additional antennas in the bottom for 5Ghz connectivity. Google AIR-RM21A-N-K9 / AIR-RM22A-N-K9 to see one.

If I rememeber my childhood geekery correctly, once 10Base-2 and 10Base-T came on the scene, the idea behind providing only an AUI port was to save money on expensive network cards by making you only buy the transciever circuitry for the kind of physical-layer Ethernet (eg. thicknet, thinnet, twisted pair) that you actually intended to use. Of course, integration and economies of scale being what they are, it quickly became cheaper to just include all three ports on your 3Com EtherLink III or what have you than to make you buy a card and a separate MAU.

Installed all drivers and software in Windows 2000. Worked perfectly with the Disk Array SCSI management.

Seeing those musical notes made me wonder if this thing could be used to build a Pi controlled Karaoke display. Would be a pretty cool project. The changes to text colour and background could be used to indicate where you are in a line by constantly refreshing the output. Fun to think about these things.

You should really get yourself a set of the clicky fiber cleaners. You'll need one for SC connectors the ones you show in the video), and a smaller one for LC (smaller, used in modern gear). It's probably a good idea to give each port a few clicks before you try to connect something, this gear has been sitting in storage for a very long time without any protective covers on the optics. Speaking of covers, it's generally a good idea to order a bag of the matching connector covers to protect your gear. The other module in your intel switch still has the covers installed. They're quite cheap on ebay or aliexpress. Also, the way you toss around the fiber cables without any protection made me cringe so hard. You should try to keep your fiber as clean as possible, so no touching on the "tip" of the connector and you should always keep the protective cap on it whenever it's unplugged.

That looks like it would be more of an edge switch than a DC switch, messy cables are the default in closets. For the fiber connection double check the auto-negotiation and flow control settings for the interfaces between both devices match as the defaults may not. Generally you want to match the yellow (single mode) fiber with the LX gbics and the aqua (multimode) fiber with SX gbics.

For the Bits vs Bytes discussion: If you go the route of marketing being responsible for that, its probably not to make it sound more, but just to protect themselves from the average user who doesn't understand protocol overhead, so for them its just "some other unit" and not "they are scamming me, because I only get about 110 MB/s through my 125 MB/s (so gigabit) link", since they usually only observe payload data (e.g. during file transfers).

I'm in the unfortunate position of running 10gig network with a bunch of linux fileservers and windows application servers and it's so bad. The bits and bytes in networking is rough, always tripping me up, I've declared binary bankruptcy. Nothing is consistent. Different places in my linux fileservers use bits, bytes, base-10, base-8, some force specific prefixes, a lot of places are just wrong about what unit they're using. And then I go over to Windows land and, Microsoft has also declared binary bankruptcy. Parts of Windows use base 10 numbers, but Microsoft doesn't like to use proper base-10 SI prefixes. I'm sure there's exceptions but basically Microsoft never uses MiB when they mean MiB, but sometimes they do mean MB, and the only way to know is to notice that the numbers don't look right. Which is a lot harder when everywhere else you're seeing related numbers is giving you a different weird choice! I can't convert all this stuff in my head in real time!

I'm gonna stick up for the black disc drive. I like it. It's a little unrefined, but it's visually distinct so it's easy to spot, it matched the dark shadows created by those holes. I don't personally like things that are very silvery, but the design of that unit is kinda nice. If it were grey/silver on the disc drive though, I think it would look a lot more dated. The black in complement to the shadows of the honeycomb circles helps visually break up what would otherwise be quite bland, like shoes that match you belt but not the rest of your outfit. So yeah, I'm gonna stick up for the little drive, I think he looks rather fetching, no need to bully him :')
