12:48 - Quake is obviously not in 640x480 but 320x200 and 38.3 FPS is not so much for a 200MHz Pentium. Doom is either just 35.6FPS which really sucks. May it be the graphics card that makes the results so bad, also those ram sticks, one pair is one sided and another double sided.
@Branco_G
@Branco_G 22 күн бұрын
It would make a lot more sense if Quake was in 320x200! I had a look through the video, and I selected option 'e', which is the Quake 640x480 time demo. I'm not entirely sure why the Doom score is so low, I'd imagine that there could be many variables at play here that would need further investigation. As you mentioned, it could be related to the graphics card, but there is only really one way to answer these questions. That would be to repeat these sane benchmarks, with adjustments to the hardware and settings. Cheers for the comment, take care 👍

Reverse sleepers are so much cooler than "sleepers". And I quote "sleepers" because if you have a beige box on your desk and Cyberpunk running on your screen, the first assumption everyone makes is that it has modern hardware inside. Also it doesn't involve cutting up and ruining the finite and dwindling supply of old cases...for Reddit karma. Awesome build, I love the colour-matched cards.
@Branco_G
@Branco_G 25 күн бұрын
Thanks man. Yeah, I agree, keep the dwindling supply of beige boxes for genuine period authentic builds. Sleeper builds are a bit dumb in my opinion, for the reason that you've stated, and because of the increased amount of work involved in doing so. Thankfully I chose a mobo that is ATX form factor, but even if that was not the case, and I happened to be using an older AT style board, you can pick up an I/O shield with the AT keyboard connector cutout, therefore accommodating all different board form factor without needing to modify the case. At any point, I can pull the components from this case and throw a brand new system into it, which is something you can't do with a modified beige box. Thanks for the comments. It is nice to hear that we have a similar opinion on sleeper builds. Take care

9:12 It is worth mentioning that the previous RAM stick would not have worked at full capacity in _any_ BX board. You need a double-sided 256meg module (with x8 chips). I find it odd that a BX board would not accept ones like that, people have had them work in _LX_ boards as long as the BIOS was updated - the latest version for the BX6 is from 2000 so really ought to be new enough.
@Branco_G
@Branco_G 28 күн бұрын
No idea man, it is just one of those weird quirks, I guess. The 256MB module does work, but only registers half the capacity 🤷🏻‍♂️ I was going to say that a bios flash may sort it, but I've already flashed the bios to the latest version. From what I have read online, it is stated that the maximum memory capacity is 512MB. All I can say it that it keeps me on my toes 😁 Thanks for commenting 👍

I had an AMD K6-2 450 myself, around 1999, running on a Jetway J-542C motherboard, and I think 24MB of RAM that was pinched from the old system and a 4MB S3 Virge. I agree that the Pentium II was the superior processor, even though the cache arrangement was far inferior. At the time, for me, it was cost that led me down the AMD route. Nice to be able to look back 20+ years at what I missed.

Quake II isn't a 3Dfx game, it runs with Opengl. You can run it directly Opengl and perfectly with any modern hardware. You can use a Opengl -> Direct3D wrapper to run it. What you're showing now is running it twice the API wrappings, Opengl -> Glide -> Direct3D which is very impractical to do.
@Branco_G
@Branco_G Ай бұрын
Yes, Quake II is probably not the best choice as you're completely correct it is not a 3DFX game, owners of a Voodoo card would need to use the MiniGL driver, which is essentially a mini-subset of OpenGL functions. This may seem impractical to run the game in this way, but it looks and runs great. Thanks for the comment, all completely valid points. I shall look to rectify the points you made in a future video. Hey Darthkielbasa, thanks for your comment. I actually do not have a backup or restore procedure in place at the moment. If I am completely honest, I hadn't even really thought about backing up my Virtual Machine, as I have never really seen the need to do so. If my VM had been using a virtual disk, then I would probably manually make periodic backups of the vdisk image, say once a week. I've been running this setup for a while, I've not had any problems with booting, or data loss on my VM. It is setup with two physical disks assigned, a 120GB SSD for boot, and a 1TB HDD for storage, no virtual disk is being used. If the VM ran into any problems and was unable to boot for whatever reason, it would be a slight incovienience yes, but I would not loose anything valuable. I would just need to do a Windows reinstall, and the VM would be back up and running again. I will have to take a look into a backup and recovery procedure in more depth as it is not really something I have looked into.

Just remember to remove batteries from MB if they had some juice left. Never had a single issue with this method and I cleaned dozens of boards. Literally. They were definitely interesting processors. They did have problems with mixed code though, so you will want to run a full 32bit operating system. I'd recommend Win2K, but you could run NT4 or NT 3.51 if you are feeling particularly masochistic. The period correct "high end" 2D graphics card that most of these were likely used with on high-end workstations was most likely the original Matrox Millennium MGA from late 1995. They became obsolete fairly quickly and you could buy them quite cheaply after just a couple of years. I recall looking at the computer mags circa 1997 when I was at Bad Aibling station and figuring up what a dual CPU Tyan mainboard and a couple of 180mhz PPros would cost me. Fortunately, I never pulled the trigger on that one at the time, since I was able to get it 10 years later for almost nothing! You may want to consider getting a CPU fan or making some ducting to pull case fan air over that heat sink, since they get hot. I'm still looking for a matched pair of 1 MB 200 mhz CPUs to replace the 512K 200mhz pair I have. but with the way prices are on these since the moronic CPU scrappers targeted them so heavily, I suspect I'll never see them.
@Branco_G
@Branco_G 4 ай бұрын
Hi Dennis, Cheers for the comment and the extra info. It is handy to know what hardware these systems were running at the time, I may even try to pick up a Matrox Millennium MGA to keep the hardware period authentic. Yes, I agree, I only really threw Win95 on her because it had been so long since I'd last used it, so for nostalgia, really. I might give NT4 a go just because I've not used it before, but I think I'll end up with Win2K being installed eventually. I've got a few little bits that need attention, CPU cooler being one of them as I noticed she was getting a little toasty with just the passive cooler. Yeah man, the prices of the Pentium Pro are crazy and, as you mentioned, scrappers driving up the prices. Socket 8 motherboards are the most difficult to find, especially ones that are still in fully working order. I'd been looking for a while before coming across this Gateway 2000 mobo. I've never been into the black plastic/fibre Pentium Pro's. Only because, aesthetically, the ceramic and gold CPUs just look nicer 😊 but I would still like a couple in my collection. That must be rather frustrating being in that situation. As if it is not hard enough to find one CPU, you have to find a matched pair 🙄 I hope that you find a matched pair so you can move forward with your upgrade. Take care 👍

Thanks for commenting and providing that extra bit of information. I will amend the title, I'm not sure if I said it was EDO in the video, I can't amend that mistake. Cheers 👍

NP, I spent almost 20 years building PCs through the 90s and 2000s (Apple IIs and C64/128 mainly before that). it reminds me of just how many systems we got through the recyclers I volunteered for in the mid-90s, when Windows 95 came out and everyone was upgrading/replacing those XTs, 286s and low-end 386s, and building 486s and Pentiums to run it. iirc only the very last 486 boards supported EDO on the 72 pins (ie: FINALi (Ali) chipset)

That must have been a pretty awesome job. I'd have loved to have done something like that. I was 11 in '95 and learnt about building and tinkering with computers from my old man, and generally just messing about with them. I've probably forgotten a lot of what I learnt back then, but it's interesting to look back on systems similar to ones I owned and others that I couldn't have dreamed of owning back then, relearn and learn some new things about them systems. Also, preserve some of these systems because there are less and less of them all the time.

Thank you for asmr video :) Most of P Pro platforms older then super socket 7 and its sad. There is an interesting option but its rare and costs a lot - slotcket adapter from socket8 to slot1. Using such cool CPU on BX motherboard can unleash full potential of this CPU with 100mhz fsb, sdram, AGP video cards etc.

Yeah man, I'd love to have one, but as you mentioned, they're pretty rare, and when one does pop up, they're quite expensive. Hopefully, one day, I'll get my hands one one so we can have a closer look at one. Cheers for the comments. Have a great day 👍

@@Branco_GWhat if one made a clone of Asus C-P6S1

@QuestionQuest Good question 🤨😄 I'm fairly certain that it had already been done a long time ago, and even the clones are now pretty expensive. If someone could make a new clone for a fair price, that would be awesome. I would actually be able to find homes for my collection of Pentium Pro's. To be fair, I'd be happy with just the one, just so I could have a little play with 😊

Adapter is only one part of the problem - there is some bios issues on slot 1 boards to run PPro, so you will need a modified bios. But result will be interesting :)
@Branco_G
@Branco_G 4 ай бұрын
@@axescar Thanks, that is good to know and shouldn't be too much of a problem, providing I can find a modified bios rom somewhere. Reflash the bios and do some testing. 😁 I'll also be able to compare it to this system to see what kind of performance gains there are.

Hi Kurt, cheers for the comments. I have not tried this on an A1200, but I would imagine that it is the same process and that it should work on the 1200 with no problems 😊

Hi Kurt. Yes, there is a walk through on how to install the files. It is in the video with the PCMCIA adapter in it. In that video, I installed the games from a CF card installed in the PCMCIA slot onto the internal hdd (which is also a CF card) The games are installed under the Amiga shell by typing various commands. I hope this helps 👍 kzbin.info/www/bejne/n5O3pYp4btdogZosi=_EO5Wdo7euoEfEfT

Use toothbrush and isopropyl alcohol for cleaning. Compressed air to get the shit off. Straighten the pins on your 3dfx fbu and tmu chips.

Thanks for watching and your suggestions. I did use isopropyl alcohol for cleaning, but I thought shortly afterwards, cotton wool buds weren't the best idea when they started to snag on everything 😄 Those pins do look a little suspect, and I will definitely have a closer look at them. The vast majority of this cards life has been spent in the attic, so I wouldn't be surprised if it needs some intense TLC 😊

Thanks for commenting, and I'm glad you enjoyed the video. I have an example of all but the 166mhz version of the PentiumPro. That version seems to be quite rare, I have found. Is your Pentium Pro in a built system?

If I recall correctly, the ATi Rage3D supported 32 bit color while the S3 Trio64V+ maxed at 24 bit. The fact that the CPU didn't have to wait for a response (split transactional bus) is what really set Pentium Pro above the Socket7 CPU's. Furthermore, PentiumPro was designed for four-way multiprocessing. PentiumII adopted this bus but cut multi-processing to two-way. Install Win2kPro to support your peripherals. Gateway to the future!

Thanks for the comments and some additional information on the Pentium Pros. Yeah, I couldn't get the RagePro going, so I had to downgrade to the Trio64. I was thinking not long after the install of Win95 that it probably wasn't the best idea! 😅 I may give NT4 a go just to see what that is like, but I think you're right, Win2k is probably the wise choice.
