Woke up to this video and just had to comment! Thank you for posting - you're my big inspiration (even though I'm not planning on career in illustration, I got back to drawing after 7 years because of you! call it 25 yo crisis hahaha) and I hope you spend your end of the year with your loved ones and Eddie! Big hugs from Warsaw, Poland ❤🐾

@ Can you explain why and what you like or dismissed in Munich and Berlin? I have a job offer from both citys, visited also both as Tourist, but i cant choose, which one is better in term of „lebensqualität“ etc. Would be grateful if you share you experience. thx
@janapolak10 күн бұрын
@ sorry for the late reply and congrats on the job offers! It is so hard to say which city is better, each has its perks and disadvantages… Life quality is probably better in Munich- there is so much nature, its clean and beautiful, but also very Bavarian, which can feel a bit unwelcoming if you are not from there. You’ll do well there if you already have a job, speak german and know some people. Berlin on the other hand does not have such beautiful surroundings, is a bit grimy, but because it is so international and everyone comes from somewhere else, feels more like home to me. And there is so much to do here, the parks, cafes, restaurants, flea markets, new things popping up all the time, you always have things to do and see. Also doing things alone here feels nicer, i like how anonymous you can be in a big city. Hopefully this helps. You can live really well in both places, but they are very different. I prefer Berlin right now, but could see myself living in Munich at some point, when my life is a bit more stable and i speak german well and make more money:)
@Big.dragon009 күн бұрын
@ Thx for your reply, its helps me alot. Its sound like munich is more suitable in my case. I prefer nature and cleanliness and also geographically is munich better imo. Wish you all the best for career…

This makes me sad. 25 yrs. ago, I lived in a Berlin appartment, not far from you, same size, only one room, but a big kitchen, what we call a Wohnküche and a roof terrace. We payed 650 DM (!) warm for it. What the f....has happened with the prices for rents? I really like how you live and I wish you very happy arting in your space.
@janapolak10 күн бұрын
I know, it is sad. This price from a few years ago is probably even cheap right now! I am in Prenzlauerberg now and got lucky with rent here, but still not 650 kind of lucky :)

I cannot believe rat poison was under a restaurant table in such a way, I think that is illegal. Soooooo glad you were able to get Eddie immediately to a vet and all is well. Thank you for sharing, really enjoyed watching, looking forward to the next posting.
@janapolak10 күн бұрын
It probably is illegal, because the restaurant owner refused to cooperate when we called to ask what king of poison it was, just to tell the vet and to help Eddie! Luckily it all ended well. Another lesson for life, always check the pet’s surrounding in public spaces.

Thank you for this lovely escape. I just had a bad and challenging day preparing for a workshop at a store in my new country/new culture and just wanted to come home and watch a bit of escapism and saw this! And then when you mentioned needing to put yourself out there more as an introvert, I can relate! As hard as the day was, it was good for me to do it. And to enjoy the video at the end of the day so thank you! I’m so relieved Eddie is ok. So the restaurants put the poison out under the tables or is it strangers?? Terrifying!
@janapolak2 ай бұрын
Thank you so much for writing this, I am so glad to hear my videos can provide some comfort❤️ I wish you all the best with your workshop! Its so tough getting things going in a new place, so congrats on making it happen! I struggle with putting myself out there too, but most of the time it is so worth it in the end. I will take this as a motivation myself too:) The poison was put there but the restaurant owners, it was tucked in under the bench. Once we called them they did not want to cooperate, we just wanted to know what kind of poison it was… it is probably prohibited to have it in the dining area, but I have seen it in other restaurants too… you always have to be so careful with a dog or kids!

Wow....that was a scary situation with Eddie getting hold of the poison. Glad he will be OK and that was good advice for parents of small children and pet owners. The places you covered in this video look really picturesque and relaxing. My grandmother used to always grow Zinnias in her garden.

@janapolak2 ай бұрын
Thank you! It was such a nice sunny autumn afternoon when we arrived in Weimar, it all felt so nice. Except for how the day ended. Luckily Ed was completely fine. The poison got out before it started to have an effect and he had no clue what was going on. The next day he was like nothing happened:)

I'm glad that you persevered and enjoyed your trip -- if that emergency had happened to my dog, I think I would have wanted to pack up and head home 😩
@janapolak2 ай бұрын
It was so scary! But Eddie was completely fine. The vet said that the poison starts working after a few days and causes internal bleeding if it is not removed. We were lucky to have gotten it sorted super fast and Ed did not feel a thing other than some discomfort from puking the poison out. We were safe to travel with him:) now we obsessively check every corner he can reach when we are out.

Jana! It's so exciting to see your progression as an artist! It's super hard sometimes to be aware of how things will turn out in a years time, but I'd really continue with freelance as the amount of work you are getting already shows you are in demand and your work is incredibly professional. As someone who has been working in illustration (as an agent and artist) it goes up and down and this year is a tricky one - not as many commissions and budgets are being restricted due to elections and issues worldwide. I lecture part-time and absolutely love it - so graphic design would be a fab part-time job but I'd also look into teaching online if you enjoy talking about illustration, it's often part-time (english speaking) and you can do it from anywhere! Good Luck xxx

Hi Connie! Means a lot to hear this from you! Thank you for all the ideas, I will look into them. I definitely do not want to quit pursuing illustration, just really want to have something more secure set up as well. We’ll see what happens, learning and trying new things can only help. Thanks and best wishes from Berlin 🌻

Always so nice to see and hear an update on your progress as an illustrator. I can tell you're anxious to have a steady source of business you can rely on. Sounds like you're getting there and hope that opportunity comes soon! With each commission, large or small, your work is getting more exposure with potential future clients. I had never heard of a "Zine" before. They're pretty neat little booklets to show your illustration talents. Everything you draw always looks so cute - people, animals, insects, and even a TV Tower! Looking forward to your next update.

It’s fascinating to see all of the different ways in which you illustrate - in the different magazines, children’s books, live events, travel images, art prints and zines. Love seeing what you have been working on! It's super hard to acknowledge ones own success, especially when doing freelance work. But I think you have come very far. I think learning graphic design and applying for a full time job is a great idea, as you get to expand your portfolio and skills. Also you get to connect with many creatives and might get offered some cool Illustration jobs through contacts. I'm currently studying Design in Berlin and work part time at an Agency. If you ever have questions about any Adobe stuff, graphic design or anything else please don't hesitate asking. Greetings from Kreuzberg :)

Hi Jana, I really love your illustrations and videos! I was wondering if I could ask for a few tips on learning to draw. Did you take any classes online or in person? Did you learn from books? What worked for you? Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you 😊
@janapolak2 ай бұрын
Thank you! And sorry for a late reply… I mostly learned drawing by myself, just by doing it lots and finding inspiration in other artists… I loved drawing as a kid, then stopped for many years while in school until I studied industrial design, where we learned to draw objects very technically. It was all too technical for me, but still a good lesson in some basic drawing and perspectives. I moved to Berlin right after graduating and started drawing for fun again, just drawing little things I saw and wanted to document. I tried some different techniques and stuck to the ones that I enjoyed most. Style somehow starts to develop as you go. I do look at pinterest and instagram and books for inspiration, but its a thin line between getting inspired, feeling bad about your own skills and trying to copy, so I try to limit it to a good measure. I did a class in business part of illustration lat year, but nothing drawing related. It would be nice to at some point though! I think just drawing from observation is a good start. the more you do it the better:) I still feel rusty whenever I just drop it for a week or two. And have fun with it! :)

Thank you Jana, this is great advice and I really appreciate it. I find it so hard to stick to one thing and be consistent. I want to take side jobs too and travel a bit. any tips?
@janapolak4 ай бұрын
Side jobs are great when you need some extra income to support yourself while getting a creative career going. I’ve been a server, shop assistant and currently I babysit… What I like about this kinds of jobs is that they don’t demand lots of brain activity which I can use for my main work, and that they are more social and active, which is a good contrast a few times a week to my normal sitting at my desk drawing days. The bad part is that they pay little… Travelling lots might be hard to do without a regular income… 5 years into illustration I still rely on my side job and not making much money stresses me out so I’m starting to look for a more proper job and maybe have less time for art for a while. Its tough to make art work, it is possible but there are so many ways people go about it. I’ll talk about this in my next video. Good luck!
