I agree with Joe here. In my Bjj class we have a purple belt who can hang with the best of the black belts in our area. He is a purple belt but he competes kinda often so when he’s up against some hobbiest brown or black belts he’s always giving them crazy work

I started cross training BJJ with my judo, and a BJJ blue belt causes serious problems on the ground with most judo black belts. Judo has moved on a bit in the last few years, so it’s not quite so dramatic, but it really helped me competitively. Equally, a decent club level judoka gives nightmares to a lot of black belts BJJ guys in the standing department.

I can relate to a lot of students who quit at the door of the purple. I have to stop preparing for the purple as my 52 yo athletic body is beginning to show some serious signs of injuries here and there, thought i was on my way, but guys push me on the brink of injury to prepare me for the purple. If being a purple, but at what cost, I need to enjoy this art and stay healty, so I'll forget that purple belt chasin, its toxic.
