2023 - The cat litter needs to be a baked clay variety, unscented, and free of additives, unbaked clay will continuously decompose.

I just bought a second-hand 75 gallon tank. The trim is cracked in places and the brace is broken. Along with looking like it's been resealed at least a couple times. Do tanks this size not need the middle brace in the top trim? I'm hoping to take it completely apart and re-do the whole tank... It won't be filled with water, but will have about 6-8 inches of sand/EcoEarth substrate (so still a good bit of weight).

I don't recommend it either great for plants but not so great for fish I put it in my aquarium but I kapped it with pea gravel the water was super clear however but it certainly mess with the pH and general hardness
@Frickenadazzal10 ай бұрын
Same, I used lbs of sand over the kitty litter, going for about 2" depth. Off to get distilled water, slowly dissolving baking soda, API aquarium salt, and msm in a separate container. Just going to add in tiny bit by bit to not cause any more stress. Plants could be doing better. Would start again using the walsted method.

When I do this mine makes crunchy sounds. There must be lots of dirt/sand stuck in there, it sounds really bad. The previous owner had it for a turtle or tortoise and had it sitting outside which may be working in my favor in terms of loosening the silicone bonds but I'm afraid the glass may have had just about as much as it can. I don't know. I'm trying to be very gentle with it but I'm worried the glass may crack either way. I don't plan on keeping the trim. I'm trying to take it all apart to then cut into pieces to make 2 seperate terrariums out of it, with plexiglass fronts /w hinged doors. Another issue I'm having is I find my putty knife gets stuck under the rim frequently and I'm afraid one of these times I pull it out it'll crack the glass. Is it normal for it to get stuck sometimes?

@fishroombum37713 жыл бұрын
@@VinylUnboxings No, but very close as once it settles after a 20 mins. rinse, it settled in and I used it "underneath" some soil substrate, mostly as a filler. It's a very good solution, I just don't like it being visible.

I am not sure but this is ground kitty litter, I believe you need to cap it and use "baked clay".
@pistolstart5 жыл бұрын
Anyone watching this video in 2019 know this. Cat litter substrate works great you don't need to cap it. Special kitty unscented non clumping clay cat litter is the brand I used. Rinsed it using a fine food sifter until water ran clear. Water is always a bit cloudy when you first set up. Gently add water using a plastic bag. Add your plants. Next day do a 100% water change again refilling gently. Once tank is established water will be crystal clear. Add your fish when water specs are correct. Hope this helps.
@wylee376605 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the very clear and easy to understand descriptions. My 20 gallon fish tank has been looking cloudy too frequently. I have been changing the aqueon filter sometimes twice a month. I will try following your suggestions and see if that helps. Also, my refill water is tap water (well water) that has been in reused water jugs for a week, but is coder than the tank water. My albino cats (corydoras) are breeding too frequently and I'm getting swamped with fry! The water readings are within normal limits. Being a typical "mother", I suspect that I am feeding my corydoras and neon tetras too much food and too often (twice a day). Also, the light is set on a timer and is set for 14 hours (7a.m. to 9 p.m.). OOPPPSSSSSS! I will change that today, too. Thank you.
@AquariumKnowhow4 жыл бұрын
what filter are you running? sometimes I go 6 months before changing or cleaning the filter, although I do tend to replace the original filter media with my own stuff which has a lot more filtering capacity. Feeding twice a day may be a bit too much in my opinion. depends on what fish you are keeping and and at what temp. higher temp will increase the metabolism of fish and also long term shorten their life span. according to some studies. I keep Bichirs, african leaf fish plus a few others, but they are big hungry fish and I feed them maybe every other day. more often then not I tend to feed them everyday, but some times when I see chunks of uneaten shrimp the day after I will not feed them for 2 days. My fish are still fat and happy. It's good to let them clear out their digestive system and get hungry sometimes.
@ramsayhunt30674 жыл бұрын
@@AquariumKnowhow I use an aqueon filter. It's rated for a 30 gallon tank. The latest is my string of LED lights in the hood are "burning out." It's starting from the far end. So far, two of the 5 sets have stopped working. BTW, my tank has common fish: seven corydoras, four neon tetras, one bristle nose pleco (too big for the tank now) , three cichlids and one mollie. The water temp is between 74 and 76 degrees. They seem happy with it. Thank you for your great videos!

Are there any bichirs small enough to live long term in a 55 aside from senegals?
@AquariumKnowhow5 жыл бұрын
Sadly, no. 55 gallon is about as small as I would go for Senegals. My male Senegal is about 8-9 inches and he is about 8 years old. They slow their growth after the first year or two but never stop growing. Females tend to get larger then the males in my personal experience.
