Thank you so much for making this video and sharing it with us. I am a first-time aquarium owner and have one beta fish in a 2.5 gallon tank. Your video was extremely helpful in showing me how to clean an aquarium while keeping fish safe and healthy at the same time .

Don't dump the dirty water. Use it on your houseplants. Its the greatest houseplant food you will ever have. Also, do not scrub your canister clean. The walls of the canister are full of good bacteria that will help repopulate the new filter bag quickly. Its not visible anyway as it hangs on the back of your aquarium. By doing it the way you are doing it now, you are basically starting the cycling all over again and you will have ammonia spikes. .
@eneyerayf.4068 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for the tip. I did Google that and the only thing you may want to add is that you don't want to use aquarium water that has salt in it, which can damage any kind of houseplant, etc. . Thank you again for your tip!

to start the syphoning part, you move the thing that goes in the water up n down in the water and it starts on its own. No need to suck w your mouth. petco has a video that shows how to do this
@Roller766 жыл бұрын
Top Secret Haha I guess he likes the thought of getting sick. He can actually get Salmonella! And why do that when, yes you're right, move the tube back and forth. Or the easiest, they come with a ball that's installed about a foot after the large tube. You simply squeeze it over and over until the water is moving.

If you pinch the hose, it's enough to slow the flow while still creating suction. And it's usually recommend not to go over 20% when changing water. Any more than that and not only will offset the balances of chemicals and bacteria you can send your fish into shock. You always want to make sure the PH of your tap is the same (or close) to your tank. If it's too different it will shock your fish and could kill them.

Thanks that was very helpful. I have a question. How many fish can we keep in a 5 gallon tank
@fishlore32049 жыл бұрын
It depends on the size of the fish gold fish 3-5 most tropical fish 8-12
@gigip.93119 жыл бұрын
Fish Lore Surely you don't think that goldfish (especially 3-5) can live in a 5 gallon tank. For a five gallon, I would really just recommend a betta fish.
@TheChocOtaku9 жыл бұрын
Sukhdev Singh Oh lord no, please don't put a goldfish in a five gallon. I had two goldfish in a ten gallon, and even that was pushing it (in fact, goldfish are supposed to live for fifteen years; mine both died at five, as I was in the process of shopping for a larger tank for them). Ten gallons per goldfish, at LEAST (I learned the hard way), especially for comets and shubunkins. For a five gallon I'd say a single betta (a very happy betta, with that much room), maybe three or four guppies, or some danios (which are surprisingly fun). I have five golden long finned zebra danios in a 20 long right now (they're getting moved once I get my axolotls) and they're surprisingly fun and quirky lil guys! also, with a five gallon, you could get the little danios in the GloFish colors that glow under blacklight. THAT would be fun. Anyways, with the guppies, a lot of people buy them to breed them because unlike most fish, they give live birth instead of laying eggs, so it makes for a fun and interesting science exploration. Male guppies can be fin-nippers, so if you're getting multiples, keep one male and a few females, or just have a sorority tank with only girls. Good luck!

Good video, but there are alot of fry/fish in that size tank. Hope you do weekly water changes with that many fish.
@Roller766 жыл бұрын
KovenDC I agree there are alot but the bigger the tank the less you need to change water or clean the tank. The only thing is would be cleaning the filter regularly. I hate Marineland filters cuz they are loud and the wheels... really? I prefer Fluval because you can change the neccessary filters, carbon, or bio bags.

Do u replace your cartridge every time u do a water change or you use the same one to keep the beneficial bacteria?? Thanks
@Ace121749 жыл бұрын
+NEMO HOES It's better off if you don't replace the media every water change/clean. You can rinse it in the aquarium water that you removed to get rid of dirt and debris, but the beneficial bacteria will still live in the media. I had a tank once that used three levels of media and so I DID replace one out of the 3 every once in a while. Then the next time I'd replace a different one. This kept BB in my filter media while still getting new media when their life had run its course.

@MaiCohWolf10 жыл бұрын
O.O" Twice a month? I go about 3-4 months before totally cleaning and siphoning the gravel in my aquarium and i have never had problems in 5 years. Algae doesn't pile up, water is always crystal clear and fish are healthy… I also extract the fish and drain all the water when I clean my tank. No problems.
@MaiCohWolf10 жыл бұрын
Eww! Suck on the siphon? No, just dip the fat end of the siphon then lift it upright and when the water is going down, put it back in the water. Works just the same...
@TheChocOtaku9 жыл бұрын
MaiCohWolf Yeah, if you do water changes and minor cleanings once a week then you only really need to do a full-on cleaning once every 2-3 months. I know some fish/salamander species are really sensitive to certain buildups in the water so you actually have to change the water once a week anyways.

hi i need ur help. i bought a used fish tank with this same machine (idk what its called). whisper 10. i think it is broken because my husband and i have to clean the tank EVERY 3 DAYS. the water literally gets dirty every 2-3 days. we only have 3 goldfish in it. i even change the filter and the water still gets dirty every 2-3 days. what does this mean? what do u recommend that is not too pricey but clean out the tank less frequently. we have a 10 gallon fish tank with 3 goldfish
@AquariumKnowhow9 жыл бұрын
+Naty R what do you mean by dirty? do you have a water test kit? visual diagnosis of the water is impossible. did you cycle the tank for at least 2-3 weeks before adding fish? look up "cycling a tank" and "nitrogen cycle" it will explain a lot. usually in new tanks there is an algae bloom that will make the water cloudy. this is normal, and generally you don't want to change the water much in a new tank. I would get a test kit and watch for ammonia mainly but also nitrates. when nitrates start to get high that is when you do a water change. also goldfish need about 20 gallons each. when they are small it will be OK but gold fish get big and are one of the dirtiest fish. they are eating pooping machines. hope this helps. you can also take a sample of your water to the pet store and they can test it for you.
@nat33579 жыл бұрын
+AquariaCustomDesign what we did, we cleaned the tank, let it run for a few days before we put the fish in. and it was all totally fine. after we put the fish in, thats when we noticed the water got dirty easily and we had to clean it every 2-3 days. we have no plants in the tank. the water would get VERRRYYY foggy. and hard to see the fish. we don't know whats going on, unless we have to buy a new machine
@WhoaDammit19679 жыл бұрын
+Naty R a 10 gallon tank is way to small for 3 goldfish. you need at least a 30-40 gallon tank for them. goldfish dirty water really fast even with a working filter.(lots of ammonia...) i'd recommend either a much larger tank or get different fish. either way you need to get a new filter. you can get one at walmart, your local pet/fish store or ebay

@155DJJ8 жыл бұрын
Why are you using the same cartridge? Can't use a new one with tank water not rinse with tap water.
@pershop49508 жыл бұрын
Usually you can extend the life of the filter pad / cartridge by washing it out with the old aquarium water. Partially that is because some people say you don't really need the active carbon (that was in the cartridge), so the old cartridge still serves the function of trapping debris for 2-3x as long if you just wash it out. In other words, instead of replacing it entirely every 2-4 weeks (which also means new bacteria need to colonize the cartridge), instead you just wash off the old debris and resuse the cartridge (bacteria are still on the cartridge), and you can use the same pad for 6-12 weeks instead. Note that if you use an external bag with carbon like the video shows, then that's fine too, because the cartridge then doesn't need to be replaced just to replace the carbon.
