I have a 20 gallon tank that has never had a problem with and never done a water change .I do have a small box filter so I have water movement in there. I started with 4 plants and now I'm taking plants out to start up other tanks. I have duck weed with 4 inches of roots

Last 2 weekends, I converted my 3 ft tank into a dirted tank. Aside from elodea and hornwort, I planted pennywort plants as well. I just gathered it from our garden. Until now, my swordtails are ok. Though I can't put tiger barbs on it because my plants are still growing.

Thank you so much!!! I listen to you and Father Fish explaining the Walstad Method listening to both prospective is very informative. I do review several and take notes Im teaching my students about ecology is this the best way to teach them. We are doing the Walsted Method, the high tech method and the Father Fish Method

I didn't think Air plants would take to frequent misting. Do you know what kind yours are?
@LukeMcGuireoides2 жыл бұрын
Never mind. You went into some detail. But they do tolerate frequent misting, I assume?

Anyone able to help ! I’m from australia and I’m really struggling to find an organic soil without fertiliser, is natural fertiliser okay such as blood and bone and organic fertiliser pellets. If not, is it okay to make your own soil 🤷🏼♀️

Great video Joe -- I'm wondering how long this setup 'lasts' vs. how long before you have to change out an enriched substrate?

What do you do when the dirt you have used “runs out”?
@underwaterculture26253 жыл бұрын
It doesn't. it constantly gets replinished by fish waste and other waste. It tends to slow down, but it doesn't "run out"

I also added duck weed to my pond but it was dominated by vallis , the duckweed just turned brown and died , i thought it must be because of some kind of imbalance in the tank , but after watching this it makes sense , for why it died ..... I am amazed

Hi what kind of power head do you have? And must I have filtration for the Walstad method? I have a 6gal tank and just planted it last week. It has a slight translucent film near the top.

Father Fish is a big advocate for deep substrates. Says that it's good for removing nitrates from the aquarium.

PH is the "power of hydrogen" not potential,, you have tanks but do not talk chemistry unless you understand it.. nd the reason you wont get into the scientific aspects of NH3<< known as ammonia is because you do NOT know! true chemistry,, typical internet YOU tube users uninformed passing off false and or incomplete Infor!

Hey great info your vids have helped a lot wish I woulda found your channel when getting back into fish keeping. But I’m starting my second dirted walstad style and I was wondering if the gravel is good enough to cap off the mud and hold in down like sand would. I mean it seams to work great in your tank but I just wanted to be sure I’ve heard that only sand cap can choke out roots? Also for walstad style is filter ok? I’m trying to do a full planted 40 breeder and I do have a south facing window was thinking of placing it with only one smaller side to the window as to see the scape from both sides through and what you said about the natural light has me hoping for the best. Anyways any tips on getting a tank to start really being a true walstad. Should I run powerhead only? Or get another filter and use some pre cycled media I have. Sorry this is a lot anything helps thanks! Also I do know it truly takes time for it to become a walstad or I maybe wrong

Sir i had recently setup a walstad method tank..i am experiencing plants melting from bottom but new shoots emerging on top portion of these plants.These are mostly hard plants also had few issues like white cotton like algae on the stems not much but few...is this the issue caused due to light had an Led installed at a height of 3inch over the tank...it is a low budget setup
@richardandrews40764 жыл бұрын
I had exactly the same issues with Java fern , had it in the tank to start on its own and it grew incredibly quickly but when I add a small dirt planted area to the tank with a few root feeding plants it just died off , tried a few different varieties all attached to wood but all did the same !!

first i wanted to do the walstad method because it looks great and takes relatively low effort for saving tons of electrical costs. but now it has a whole other aspect to it, it is natural, if you think about it this is how fish are supposed to live; in natural water without being stripped of crucial natural defence mechanisms and substances. really great i will get into the book tommorow

i might be to late but i bought organic soil sieved it and used it. hope it does its job. its organic so thats one thing i got right..
