I was writing a very long comment here about the whole video before accidentally deleting it. I’ll make it again some day but I did just want to note one thing Tenten: if you haven’t taken a look, I highly recommend Naruto SD (Rock Lee and the Springtime of youth, or Rock Lee and his Ninja Pals), a chibi, comedy-centric spin-off of Naruto Shippuden. Tenten is a main character there and she’s hilarious. Single-handedly made me like her even though she’s only moderately in character (not that there’s a whole lot of character lolll). Hinata also features extensively (She has at least one scene in roughly half the episodes of which there are 51, and she's the main character of a few), and she’s also hilarious in it. If you liked 495 you will probably like it because it has similar humor, taking each character’s “gimmick” and just running away with it for dozens of gags. I was there when it came out and my initial thought upon its announcement was total indifference, I expected nothing whatsoever from it but after giving it a chance it ended up being one of the funniest anime I have ever watched. I’ve rewatched it from time to time over the last decade and it never stops being funny. Although the show isn’t as energetic and frantic as 495, it's more similar to something like Shin Chan or Bobobo. But if you're inclined to give anime-only Naruto material a shot, this is by far my favorite. Wish there was more.

9:13 I'am always cautious about watching mecha content made by people who love the most normie titles of the genre (Gurren laggan, Code Geass and Evangelion) and you didn't disappoint with an honest to God braindead take about Getter as a franchise. 1. What the hell do you mean by "barely has a continuity? Didn't you read the manga for this video? Or you just watched Getter Robo explained videos on KZbin? The manga by Ishikawa is the main continuity, that's it, not hard to understand. 2. ONE title in the whole saga is out of chronological order and is an entry that changes NOTHING by being read in chronological order, literally nobody in the history of the world complaims about that, just you. 3. So why the anime mostly being standolone is a bad thing? Each one is its on take on Getter, each one decided to have a new story, each one has a new continuity that literally makes easier for new people to understand not harder, you just pick the one you want and watch, again, you are the only person who complaims about that at all. 5. You said yourself, "spin-offs not written by Ken Ishikawa", they are spin-off, writen by other people, again, new takes on Getter that do new stuff, why you have such difficulty understanding the basic concept of something in a franchise being separate from the main originator? 6. Do you need someone to explain the story for you to understand? Armageddon begins in the middle of the chaos INTENTIONALLY, and as the show progress you understand more of what you didn't in the beginning, you don't need a radio drama for that, the radio drama was for marketing the series, is bonus storyline not an essential piece of the work. 7. For last, your take on Gurren Laggan having an ending is just silly. Gurren Laggan has an ending because the people behind it made with an ending in mind, not because one of the main inspirations didn't had a proper ending, looks like you made Getter sound more confusing and badly written than it really is just to make Laggan look better, in a video that is about what Laggan pays homage to this is just ridiculous pathetic an completely against the premise, seriously one of the worst takes I had ever seen in a 2 hour video supposedly made with passion to a work. Let's see if you do any better than this in the rest of the video, I hope you do and is just one minor take I have a nitpicky with. EDIT: Nope, your take on masculinity Getter is batshit insane, don't know if I want to hate watch this 2 hour if you keep the same awful takes. You don't love mecha, you are just talking out of your ass without exploring the themes of anything.

I don't think getter pilots are that deficient outside of piloting mecha or embody toxic masculinity, rather it's hyper masculinity bordering on animalistic. Ryoma is the embodiment of it. This is the guy who shows up to a martial arts tournament, calls it a dance contest, beats up everyone including judges and then leaves. Later he also kills multiple trained assassins sent by Dr. Saotome (who I think would embody your argument more as this guy is straight up lunatic) to "test" his skill. And in New Getter Robo he laughs at getting into a fight with multiple armed thugs and easily dispatches them not even paying attention to stab wound he gets along the way. He isn't a model for masculinity or an inspiration - he's an animal. Hayato... well, you know, rips one of his subordinate's face off for fun and plans to overthrow the government. And he could've probably succeeded judging by what we see later of him. He isn't a normal person either, he's unhinged, crazy, extraordinary. Yet he's the one who gets one of my favourite scenes in the whole manga. It's so minor most probably misses it. In Getter Robo Go when big bad plants bombs in big cities, Hayato's, I believe, fiance goes to diffuse one of those bombs while he monitors the operation from HQ. Suddenly she messes up and the whole city disappears in a flash of light. At this right moment in the next page we see Hayato's yes, just for one panel, dropping his usual stern look and showing immense pain and exhaustion from the weight he has to carry, from all people he had to sacrifice to ensure humanity's survival. Before quickly getting back into usual shape when getter teams walks in. If Ryoma is a wild animal that mainly follows on instincts and basic needs, Hayato is the overseer, the professor (after Saotome dies). He has to direct others and bear the weight of sending them to their doom. He doesn't want a glorious death, he wants a release. In Arc anime he even says: "Why? Why do you once again leave me as a sole survivor? Why must I continue to bear this weight? Why can't you take me with you?". Musashi (slash Benkei) is just a chill dude. Getter 3 pilots are usually straight guys to the rest of the group. And they usually end up the worst. Even if you're stable and perfectly functional individual like Gai getter will still drive you insane. Because that's just the nature of getter - only the most unhinged, barely human individuals qualify. That's probably the reason for getter hell on future Earth, where people merged to getter machines fight like rats for parts and getter generators to one day ascend to the sky where Dragon resides. I think that's the crux of the series - it's not that overusing getter rays will lead to some kind of cataclysmic event, not, getter itself is an eldritch cosmic force with it's own will that once fully manifested will consume existence itself. It's as if Spiral Nemesis was not only an inevitability, but also the direct source of power for protagonists and the reason they've got as far a they did. At the end of Arc getter trio rejects that inevitable future and I think this is where Gurren Lagann comes in since it's essentially just that - a hope against Getter's nihilism, humanity taking back it's future from cosmic forces that until then held it hostage.

The answer is that Cosmic horror deals with things unknowable to AND indifferent or hostile (maybe inadvertently) to humanity. This is literally a thing that wants to improve or purify or reincarnate humanity. It's, like, totally the opposite of indifferent to them.

I loved season 1 so much but I missed season 2 because I thought the show only had one season. I caught back on when I saw season three was airing and I fell in love with Momoko's character. She was just like me: a kid moving to another country due to her parents jobs and with a huge language barrier. It shook my little heart to see someone like me represented in an anime. Your analysis of her was so perfect and reminded me why I love her and the other girls so much. This show is pure magic!

Oh, my heart. In Italy we were lucky enough to get all four seasons of the show dubbed and it used to be my favourite thing in the world. I think I've watched every single episode (or close to that - I would ruin everyone's Christmas if they didn't turn the tv at 9pm sharp). I remember telling my friends about it, about how I had learned how to be a friend by watching Doremi, how it was different from other cartoons. But I couldn't really explain exactly in which way; after all, don't all the other magical girl shows do the same thing? The power of friendship and all that? I had neither the vocabulary nor the media literacy to explain that despite being a book-cartoon-movie worm with a passion for writing. As the years flew by, I would still remember the show as a little jem in a sea of children shows (some of the episodes are printed on my retinas despite having only watched them once and im elementary school) but I hadn't thought it could give me anything of value now that I've grown. This has shown me how wrong I was. Some parts had me bawling my eyes out😂 and i haven't cried like that in a while. Jesus. I can't believe how much more I can relate to some of the characters now that's I've got more experiences under my belt, and how much of my behaviour I can trace back to this damn anime. You might be about 15 years too late to convince me to watch it for the first time, but you're right on time to convince me to watch it for the second one 😊 thank you for this beautiful love letter

@@AoiHeartStranger agree with you. But he’s already mentioned you on Twitter. I mean he works for discotek now of course he’d be more biased towards localization. I try watching dubs I personally find good. Stuff that isn’t riffing or just straight up changing the source material like ghost stories, shin Chan, or Hajimete no gal. Nausica isn’t that of course it’s pretty faithful, most ghibli dubs are because Miyazaki literally threatens those who change it. I dunno shaybs makes the argument it’s not happening to “important anime” so it shouldn’t be such a big deal. Does that make it less unethical, no. Not at all why do you think gekiga is the hub for actual professional translators and not localizers? Because they have actual experience speaking Japanese and have basically lived there. I mean you can’t expect the consumer to know or really care about licensing. I mean the lovely complex fiasco I do belive was a mistake, but again the consumer can see that oversight and just say okay I’m not buying from you anymore. I think discotek is great but it can be bogged down by bizzare personal preferences. I mean Justin sevakis compared working on MD Geist to scat hentai and shaybs tweeted about this comment. Lmao. I don’t think shaybs understands if you work for the localization industry and are a defender of it. It would come off as pandering he’s stil a good KZbinr with good tastes. But what people in the industry should learn is not to let petty drama affect them so much. But that’s my opinion. It’s way more nuanced than people on both sides think. It’s why I moved to Japanese twitter way easier to have actual discussions about it. And my tastes line up with older Japanese men anyway. Sorry for the long rant. I do hope both of you read it.
