I think the captain knew by Hunter’s answer at the end, that he made a mistake picking him as XO. Ramsey wanted an officer who had his own opinions, but would repeat his orders; to the captain, Hunter would flinch under the pressure of nuclear brinkmanship. Such a flaw could be catastrophic aboard a nuclear submarine. The problem was, he mistakenly took Hunter’s lack of experience for incompetence. Ramsey was a good captain, but had a narrow vision; he knew that about himself, but was too old to change. Hunter, however, could see things from multiple perspectives, which is a rare quality in a relatively new officer. He was the perfect officer for the captain’s chair, which is why Ramsey recommended him for command.

I don't think, from what I've seen, the Captain dismisses views from his XO. The movie sets it up...nicely.

Wanting a functional chain of command, where every level has the room and capability to want to know why, and to make human decisions and ask human questions about the situation is fundamentally the difference between Western militaries and Soviet militaries. They want obedient drones. We want to give everyone agency to make intelligent decisions and act even if the chain is knocked out. A strong NCO corps, basically.

The whole “both right and both wrong” argument is blow out of the water right at the start of this interaction. It is VERY obvious that the high command at the Pentagon are trying to communicate orders. While it is possible that the follow up could be a confirmation of the previous order (given the weight of the situation); it is the ABSOLUTE duty of the sun commander to ensure his or her most updated order has been received accurately. Sorry - but in this specific instance, the Captain is clearly wrong.

The sheer gall of the captain to demand that his XO give his assent to the nuclear launch or that he will relieve him and get a new XO who will is just insane. The entire purpose of having the two-person approval process is so that the captain CAN'T do exactly that!

We have here is simply an experience old sub capt and a fancy college grad XO thinking they are both right. Maybe race might be an issue but it is on the capt not the XO. In my POV and my opinion who was right in this situation?......The Xo, He acted right and prevented WW3.

Gene Hackman is a serious force. “The French Connection” is one of my all-time favorite films. Hackman just *becomes* the character. He did it in this film too. Watch “The Conversation”, “Crimson Tide” and “The French Connection” back to back and you’ll see what I mean. Denzel Washington takes it up several levels with “…the true enemy is war itself” - not just what he says but the expression on his face and every other officer in the room as they observe him and Hackman “spar” (in jest, at first). A real turning point in an excellent film. “Crimson Tide” is up there with “Das Boot”, “Run Silent, Run Deep” and “The Hunt For Red October” as far as top shelf submarine films go.

"You repeat this order or I'll find somebody who will" was the sentence where he crossed a line by every legal definition in the UCMJ. You can't dismiss someone whos entire existance is to agree with the facts or disagree as a fail safe. Because if you are wrong you might end civilization in a nuclear war. If the Captain is right the world was already over.

The Captain of the Sub got it all wrong because he was blinded by the powers bestowed upon him, that made him arrogant & ultimately ignorant...Crimson Tide 🔥❤️

The true enemy and cause of war is people's own ignorance in thinking that it is more intelligent to enforce their own will upon others rather then turning everyone into your own soldier who serves under you as you simultaneously serve under him.
