Thank you Philip. It's years since I've seen this whole film and I also watched it as a teenager in the mid '80s.

So many levels in this story. Bittersweet…..especially the ending-no spoilers but a constant delight of a story to revisit again and again .Mr. King creates wonderful characters that you care about.

Did it end abruptly with John saying "The ice is going to break"? Or, is there more?
@tomhamilton526119 күн бұрын
@@wendybolton2604 the whole movie is brilliant and yes there is more . If you get a chance read the book. Very character driven and Stephen King creates vivid portraits of people- especially Johnny Smith. This story got me hooked onto King’s books and the movie is pretty close to the book.

The part after "The ice is going to break" when John takes his hand and feels everything okay now, then cups his face and says "You were right" meaning that his dad is the one that lives in a shell, and not him was 100% accurate.

this is the best performance by Christopher Walken.. next to "Deer Hunter"

You see the deputy keeping a close eye on him at the six minute mark… and you know it’s not with the hope John is successful lol
From the time Walken, as Johnny, realizes that its Sarah coming to the door with the brochures, its a master class in acting. He totally forgets her husband is standing right there, focusing on her as she comes to the porch. Then the 'head shake' motion to bring himself back, and then comes the best part: the Genial guy at the door, taking the brochures, making small talk, and sending them on their way...until he sees her husband put his arm round her, and its all he can do to hold it together until he closes the door. His body language motioning towards his pupil to back off a minute while he falls apart. Then he reaches for the student, more comfort for himself than the kid, and THEN the vision hits like an anvil. This short scene shows everything that is piled on this character, and Walken plays it to perfection.

The sequence shortly before she walks in to the living room: After the baby is down and sleeping, she just sits there for a second, head bowed, thinking over what she's about to do. then a deep intake of breath and her mind made up, goes into the living room and changes Johnny's life . Up until that moment, he was, and rightly so, bitter, angry, had purposely cut himself off from the world. Yeah, you know the story, they finally have sex but its the hug just before that shows how much is left unsaid between these characters. It makes it all the more heartbreaking when they keep running into each other throughout the film and how the films climax finally resolves things between them.
