I'm sure I did some of the filming, tried managing the stage, but getting pissed with Hendo didn't help.

And they timed it to perfection. If there's a band and a song that conveys the spirit of the eighties, it's The Associates and Party Fears Two. So British but so European all at once. There are others, but this is 'it'

Could the lyrics from a mighty Scottish band be a problem for London? Absurd criticism... It was hyper motivational. Hooky AF. It's never the band's fault of 'fail to launch' when that gig is entirely management.

Whatever people think of Balfe, he was one of the most significant characters in the Liverpool scene and also the post punk movement. There seems to be some envy that he made some money out of his efforts but so what?

I think it's hilarious when you look at the comments on videos like this. Everyone firing in with their views, like they know the person intimately, when in reality their views are gleamed from interviews like this. Just because ppl have been successful in a band or an actor or famous in anyway, it doesn't elevate them to a higher plain, they are people just like you and me, and as such, will recount things to their benefit, misremembered or just down right lie. I'm not saying that's what DB is doing here, I'm just saying in general, take what people say with a grain of salt, that goes for anyone, cynicism is a healthy trait, in moderation obviously.

I'm in a FB group that has Michael Finkler as a member, I asked him how he reacted when he realised that Blur's Country House was about Dave Balfe, I think Michael gave some kind of nondescript answer, and I thought oh that's weird. It was only later that I realised his reticence was because Dave Balfe was a member of the group too, lol.

Dave Balfe was the keyboard player in Dalek I Love You, before joining Julian Cope. Alan Gill's band. Both Alan and Dave played in Teardrop Explodes around 1982. Wonder what Alan makes of Dave's remarkable success ?

Thanks for uploading this Grant. I listened to the album and thought it was great then found out there was an associated doc. I've lived in Edinburgh for 30 years, and very active in the music scenes (hardcore/jungle/dnb and now all guitar genres) and it's so cool to see the cities previous music scenes. Also v interesting to see Edinburgh was once the cool city for music and Glasgow was the void, changed days unfortunately.

My favourite song of the 80’s, there’s just something about it I’ve never been able to put my finger on it
Hooky comes over really well these days and a lot more relaxed and mellow.

Wow!!! The Reunion of the Desperadoes. How cool is that??? "Cabinet of Curiosities" was one of my fave albums way back in '88 and the particular this song is so great. Met Andrew and the Band in 1989 in Edinburgh with my university friend Peter, and we even saw them live some days later...Ahem, and Grant, of course (!) I just ordered your book at once at amazon UK. Since Brexit the postage and sometimes tax are insane but fuck, I cannot get it here on german amazon, just the kindle version. But I love REAL BOOKS!!! Some days ago I ordered the "C86 & all that" book by Neil Taylor too. Seems that I missed it some years ago...So cool to dive into my 20something memories when I was a indie popster...

Martyn Ware has a fantastical perspective regarding Heaven 17. The “millions and millions” of records that Heaven 17 sold (alleged by Martyn) was, by all online sources, closer to less than half a million total. And if he thinks his version of Human League would have been more successful than the “Dare” lineup, he's more than delusional.
@RJJNYАй бұрын
Unnecessarily snide and churlish, he said he thought they would've become successful - didn't even say AS successful let alone more. Your idea that Heaven 17 sold less than half a million records "total" seems more than delusional, a quick Google search shows that just Temptation and The Luxury Gap LP sold more than that.
@stephenhawkingsfootballboo7885Ай бұрын
@@RJJNY I googled “The Luxury Gap” sales and it's around 300,000 copies - and that's their best-selling album. The Human League's “Dare” sold almost 1.6 million alone.
@RJJNYАй бұрын
@@stephenhawkingsfootballboo7885 yes, so you're claiming that all their other releases combined sold <200K copies, which is silly. Seems to me like you misunderstood what he meant and interpreted it in the worst light possible for some reason.
@stephenhawkingsfootballboo7885Ай бұрын
@@RJJNY “Penthouse And Pavement” sold 100,000 copies while “How Men Are” sold 60,000, so yes, my claim that they sold <200K copies of their other releases combined still stands. Perhaps your inability to look up things properly is silly. I like Heaven 17, but Martyn said what he said and he's wrong.
@RJJNYАй бұрын
@@stephenhawkingsfootballboo7885 they released singles as well, including some hits. You're taking a swipe at someone who still has nice things to say about the person who split up the band he'd formed behind his back.
