Found this video many years ago when I got my Cold Steel Trailmaster and a RiverCitySheath. This video popped up in my video feed today, so I watched it again. This is a very informative, and thoughtfully made presentation on the carry method(and more) of a large knife. I got more out of this video on my recent viewing than I did the first time all those years ago. (Wisdom is funny like that.) Well done, Sir. Thank you for taking the time to create it.

I was thinking about the difference between kydex and leather for this application. I like kydex better because it won’t bend or twist with age like leather can do. I had this sheath made for my Prather War Bowie three years ago and have enjoyed it immensely. Have me needed it for self defense, but it comes out fast when someone asks if I can cut something. The look on their face is worth more than the cost of a sheath. 😎

Thanks for sharing. I carry and draw a 7” bladed dagger daily like this, tho w OWB snap loops rather than the stud. I find that the double snap loops keep it stable and from falling forward while standing or backwards while sitting so that the hilt does not stick out and “tent” my shirt or jacket I am over 6’ tall, sorta slim, have a relatively short torso, and i cant seem to conceal one bigger than this well. I have to keep it high enough so i can sit w/o it coming up. This also keep my pant leg from making the hilt pivot back n forth while walking

My favorite big knife carry is my Randall No.1 that my uncle carried through three tours in Vietnam. It not only has a lot of history, it is a very well made and balanced knife. I had a lwather IWB sheath made for it and don't leave home without it. I usually carry my Tops Moccasin Ranger along with it either on my weak side or in my weak side boot.

Having a knife of this caliber on hand, this fast, is impressive. Stopping an edged weapon attack by shooting someone, of course, works, but even center mass hits with most duty caliber handguns take time to work and do nothing to parry or control incoming weapons. Sometimes taking the hand could prove faster and more definitive. This all only applies within certain distance. I'd say approximately 3 to 4 yards would be your max optimal window. Of course I'm no expert, just thinking out loud. 🤔

Practice with the live blades at full speed is always fraught with danger. The difference between gutting yourself or not is the number of hours of practice before going to the live blades. I know some very well healed bladesman in the US, few will train with the long knives at full speed. 1/2"? Plenty of room to spare in a dynamic encounter. LOL

@azqkr
@azqkr 2 жыл бұрын
You can, and many times if the gun doesn't load a bb due to user era, it's then fired dry [ assuming you mean no ammo either in the gun or the chamber ]. One thing I've learned over 30+ years of using them [ I have two ] is that a few drops of light machine oil in the oil hole located on the barrel every 6 months keeps them working just fine.

I remember this exercise very well from basic training in the Fall of 1967 at Fort Jackson, SC. I am currently searching for one of those adult size BB rifles. As I recall, the ones we used were fitted with wooden stocks with the same or nearly the same length of pull as the M-14. It was fun and surprised me as to the resulting accuracy.

I usually carry in a pocket holster in the front pocket. It works fine for cargo shorts, but sometimes the holster wants to come out with it. For jeans front pocket, I've been concerned about the draw being too slow. I take walks daily and I've been approached by a couple of guys who made me uncomfortable. A 3 second draw would be too slow and you can't stage your draw without them seeing it. Today I figured out this back pocket carry method. The draw is about 1 second. Maybe faster then front carry. The grip sticks out over the pocket and I'm wearing a flannel shirt. This is such a better way to carry for quick access. I'm not sure about sitting on the gun, but I will be playing around with the idea for everyday carry.

@azqkr
@azqkr 3 жыл бұрын
The equation/calculation used was simply to demonstrate what the size of a normal male would be at 100 yds. Not that one would have to worry about a drift of 9" at 100 yrds with any battle rifle unless in some sort of hard gale. Bullet drop would be nill at 100, and I'd simply raise the reference point to the upper chest, drop it right into COM.

Not just any sheath, it's a sheath that adjusts to your present position, whether standing or sitting with it's old world button. The knife and sheath used duplicates the old world 1840's system of carrying a large bowie knife adopted by the Spanish in New Orleans.

If that cylinder does happen to turn while grabbing, you are just going to have a knarly looking wrist left. I'm not mad at your tactics, just let people know the repercussions of failing in this situation.
@azqkr
@azqkr 3 жыл бұрын
Worst case repercussions of failing would suggest being shot. But then, as the mentors reminded us often, you're theoretically dead while being muzzled. Make the move, do something. Don't just stand there being a victim, they may not even purposely pull the trigger, but if the gun goes off, you're getting shot. Far more serious repercussions than ending up with a knarly looking wrist.

@@sawssman965 The problem with the theory of giving into their demands is that history has shown us far too many instances of that happening and the perps still shot/killed them [ many so they couldn't later identify them later ]. The mentors didn't give us the skills so we could stand there like a deer in the headlights relying on some turds good graces not to shoot us if we complied. @@azqkr look, I get that your trying to run a business and you need to sound like you know what you're talking about at all times but there's a reason people use guns to stick people up. You trying to convince random strangers disarm gunmen has a high chance of getting people killed if they believe what youre selling. You have a much higher chance of survival if you give the people what they want. At least explain that to em.
@azqkr
@azqkr 3 жыл бұрын
@@sawssman965 I"m not trying to convince anyone of anything with the vid other than what's possible IF ONE HAS THE PROPER TRAINING. It demonstrates [ again without stating as much ] that action beats reaction. Of course a layperson [ untrained in such skills ] wouldn't ever attempt to disarm a gunman without first having been shown "how to", and then multitudes of hours practicing [ like any skill where it's a mattr of life or death. I have a much greater chance of survival IF I don't rely on the perps good graces to not shoot me after compliance. If a novice believes they can duplicate what's demonstrated WITHOUT proper instruction and practice then they are just a little bit uneducated in SD skills to begin with, no matter what skill is being used. No one would think they could duplicate Bruce Lee's skills simply by watching, and if they are the type that does believe they can, well that simply suggests they are 1 D 1 0 T's. OMMV.

Put 3 more in the middle of those two, hit them all just as easily. Distance for this skill is relegated to no more than 12 feet to be as reliable as what's shown in this video. Using the proper skill based on time and distance is paramount to staying alive on the streets. If you meant stagger them at different distances, that's no issue as long as you keep the threats within this skills range.
