What a beaut! Everyone I know who has a model 10 snub loves them. And the fact that it's 60 plus years old showed how good they are

Smith&Wesson had by far the Best blueing of any firearms manufacturer. Now days, not so much. But yes, thats a very nice condition model 38. I never really cared for the shrouded hammer though.

An original BEAUTY. My first duty revolver was a 4" Model 10 M&P with the skinny/tapered barrel. I knew tall-ish officers who carried the 2" round butt in an ankle rig. S&W still offers the Mod 10 w/heavy 4" barrel... but the price... phew. In the early 80s there were some QC issues with S&W when ownership of the company was hopping around... Bangor-Punta, Lear Siegler. S&W also made the 2" Model 12 which had an alloy frame. The USAF ordered a few hundred of the Model 12s as an aviators survival handgun, which also had an alloy cylinder. They didn't last long. Enjoying your vids.

When I’d first looked for a production date after scooping it up I believe it was from between 65 and 67. The prior car dealership owner had put some orange or red nail polish on the front sight that I’d removed with some acetone. The cylinder lockup was the tightest that I’ve ever seen on a SW, new or old, let alone one that’s nearing 60 years old. I know you said it was a keeper but if you ever decide to get rid of it I’m always happy to bring it back to my safe lol

Beautiful revolver. Watching your videos is like a wonderful trip down memory lane or going back in a Time Machine 😂. Back in the day I carried a 2” model 15 upside down in a safariland armpit holster. Between that sharp square blade rear sight & the knurled hammer, I really couldn’t tell you just how many shirts & jacket linings that were sacrificed in the name of self protection 😂. Glory days 🎉😉 Thank you for sharing..

I'm retired LE and the 638 is my EDC. I carried the 638 and variants (models 38, 49, 649) on & off duty for 36 years - I'm 62. It's a very fine revolver and quite accurate, IF it has a proper tuning/"action job", proper loadings, and grips. Grips are like footwear... you may have to try different ones before you get a comfortable fit. I've never carried "+P". It's great that it's rated for those, but unless one can afford regular practice with $2-$4 per round loads, a good 125 or 158 grain hollow point will do the job. I don't think it "ugly", and have found that the hammer shroud provides a higher degree of recoil control (reduces muzzle rise/flip/roll) when compared to non shrouded J frames (models 36, 37, 60). I caary reloads in an HKS speed loader or rubber "speed strips". Personally I'd love to see this revolver in an 8/9 shot .22 Mag. I appreciated your straightforward, articulate, and MATURE presentation. There are so many firearm videos that are jokes, and worse, by teens and adults who act like them.
@HillbillyMusingsКүн бұрын
Thank you sir for the kind words! I agree 100% on the +P.....give me a good old fashion 148 Grain wadcutter or 158 grain LRN and I'll be good to go. I prefer the flatness of the speed strips over the bulk of the HKS. Also, I never considered that mass of the shrouded hammer reducing recoil, but it makes perfect sense. Thanks for watching!!

If you have 642/442 as a carry gun, the 36 makes a great range gun bc its almost the same, but doesn’t beat up your hand. Carries really well as a belt gun. Hard to find them now for less than $500 tho
@HillbillyMusings2 күн бұрын
Yep, I carry typically a 638 myself but definitely prefer the 36 when I can handle the extra weight. Thanks for watching!!

I carried the mark two in the USMC infantry late 80s. Also carried a Swiss Army knife. The combo served me well. The mark 2 sheath was pretty good, I’ve seen several K bars, go through the leather sheath and could cut stuff that you would not ordinarily want to cut like a rappel rope or rubber raft. We were never issued live ammo or bayonets so buying your own knife was the only route to have a blade for self protection or field use

I thought they were awkward-looking when I first saw them. Over the decades, and after shooting and carrying several versions of them, that hump REALLY grew in me (no pun intended), until now, where it's one of my favorite designs; I much prefer these to the fully enclosed hammer types.

Beautiful finish! I prefer the centennial pattern though as a pocket revolver, in fear of pocket lint getting jammed up into the action through that deep hammer slot.
