Working full time until the age of 70 years sounds TERRIBLE ! Here in the U.S., I will need to work until age 67 to get the full Social Security benefit ( our country's version of government pension.) We also do not get government health care until age 65, so until that age I have to get health insurance through my job or pay for it on my own ( very expensive.) There is no way I want to work that long full time. So I follow the FIRE movement and have been saving and investing aggressively for the last 20 years. I will be able to retire soon due to my financial habits. Or at least I will be able to switch to part-time work. I invest in mutual funds, bonds, securities. Real estate seems like too much work. I have one property that I own - it is the house I live in. One house is more than enough work for me!

Sounds like a good Plan 👍 i will also start investing now 👍 Real Estate … also thought about buying a 2nd one but I also dont want to Deal With it + Taxes in Germany are very high 🙈 and in Germany also retirement at Age 67 at the Moment but will raise 🙈

Decluttering gives me a mission and a purpose. Once it is done, I feel sad due to the loss of purpose. The answer is to fill the void with something healthy, as you said. We decluttered a room in our house that had extra furniture that we did not need. We cleared it all out, sold or donated the furniture, and put our fitness equipment in the room. Now it is a nice little home gym that my husband and I can use together to exercise. We exercise more now that we have a dedicated space to do it.

I enjoyed this. One thing you may not know the expression "pain in the ass" is not a polite term and I was always surprised to hear you say it. I think people say something is a "pain" instead. Other than that I really enjoyed your video and I'm just mentioning this as a tip you might not have known.

@@Isabel_K I'm glad you weren't insulted by my comment. It is just a tip for you. It isn't the end of the world to use that term. I don't think it is necessarily an impolite or offensive phrase, it is more just surprising. That's why I think the term got shortened just down to something being a "pain."

I wonder if decluttering gives a positive feeling, and then you're left with that boredom feeling, so you declutter some more, but you're wondering how much more you can declutter to keep feeling good again and again. I've heard that a good way to avoid depression is to find a way to help someone else with some kind of volunteering. What do you think?
@Isabel_K
@Isabel_K 25 күн бұрын
Yeah that is kinda What it feels like sometimes. Decluttering makes me extremely happy but I think the hard Part in life is to not always Distract yourself… that Sounds like a good Plan but I think there are Many More and different ways to „heal“ Depression. We probably all have to find out for ourselves What that is for us / the individual.

I shop to fill a void. so I started asking myself " is this a need or a want?" when that's determined "why do I want/need it?" "what value will it bring into my life?" if its a want. I ask my self " what am I trying to fill in life and what is something I can do instead?" I also gave myself slack ( something thats hard for me to do.) I wasn't able to complete my no buy year this year. but in 2024 Im determined to do a no buy/low buy year. My no buys are clothes makeup home decor my low buys are fast food beauty ( nails salon and hair salon) and I have a use it until its all gone buys shampoo/condtioner toothpaste. things that I need buy won't buy until im all out.

I actually do a low buy at any time. That means I just don't buy stuff. I just don't. What I mean by that is that not buing random stuff is my default. I only buy thing I need. Of course it might be difficult where to draw this line. For example, if I'm in the drugstore I only buy the stuff on my list which is usually things that I need to replace. I just don't buy anything I like but don't need (e.g. new nail polish, makeup... ). That goes for any random stuff like home decor, stationery, food, media (books, movies) etc. I find this very liberating. My only weak spot is clothing. But I have finally decided to cut down my budget this year and so far I succeeded. I do the same principle here. I have a budget and a wishlist and I strictly only buy what is on there. When I bought everything for the upcoming season, I'm done. I don't go shopping or browsing online without a purpose. I just don't. I don't want to think about buying all the time. Weirdly enough, it has made me more satisfied with what I have. But it is a journey, it took me years to get there and still work in progress.

@@Isabel_K What has helped me tremendously is the concept of the 10 item wardrobe (Jennifer L. Scott). I don't follow this religiously. But the insight that 10 outfits I like per season is sufficient for me, has changed the way I see my wardrobe. Now I only "need" new clothing if I have below 10 (I count tops, dresses and jumpsuits as "outfit", because this is what you change regularly, while you can wear skirts or pants with different tops) or if I need or (tbh) want something particular of a specific category, e.g. replace worn out underwear or wanting to try a new style of something (this year I bought for example a certain type of handbag). Of course, the latter is not something I actually need but here my budget comes in handy to limit my spending.

When you started talking about getting rid of your childhood photographs I was shocked! But then when you said you were going to digitize them I began to understand. Personally, I am not ready and may never be ready to get rid of photo albums as they are very much worth the mental and physical space they occupy, for me. But since you are at the point where you don't feel that emotional attachment and are happy to keep those memories in your mind (and a computer file) rather than a book it must feel good to be able to get rid of the clutter!

In the U.S., I've generally only felt the need need to keep paper docs for: 2 years past tax documents (but they're usually printable on demand online from employer/bank), insurance cards/info (same i.e. printable), government ID's [e.g. driver's license, passport, birth certificate, social security card], lease/property contracts, and unread mail. All could be organized in a normal, small, thin school folder if they weren't all different sized teeny cards. 😅

Def true. “Me” was buried under all that stuff. It seems like if we can’t prioritize what we love the most, then it’s more like a big blob or blurry or vague. I think it’s like the start of finding your inner resolve and kind of making our personal stand about what is important to us and what isn’t. And then that helps further clarify to ourselves who we really are. It helped me to more clearly see my own true preferences, while in the past I was pretty clueless about such things. And it’s just a great first step toward real authenticity. There’s really nothing better in life than being your true self and being very comfortable in that state.

Yes, i have ocd and am a type A high achiever personality. Having less material items and a decluttered space helps me feel calm and focused. The items that are left in my physical space are very specific to what I need and value in my life and are beautiful as well which levels up my daily experience. You should read "lessons learned from madam chic". It's a book about a college student who goes over to Europe to take French for a semester and learns about how the Europeans value less items and their closets are a lot smaller. It caused the exchange student to adopt a 10-item capsule wardrobe which essentially changed her life and carried over into other areas.
