This is probably one of my favourite games for its atmosphere, and it feels like its a bit of a core memory of my youth lol, but god I kind of hate it. I had it on mega drive/genesis and have got all the way to 'welcome to the machine' however even with a cheat code to give me infinite life, the autoscroll still caused me to give up so I've never beaten it. To add insult to injury if you do magically get to the final boss and you die to it (which I'm sure anyone would on their first attempt) it'll put you back to welcome to the machine. This game was responsible for many tears... Maybe I'll beat it one day

@@mkjazz3 stage 2 for the first loop its weird, you gotta let the blue plane leave the hanger, shoot it down then shoot the building next to it on its right. for the loops after, you can just shoot the hanger. for stage 3 when destroying the energy reactor hold down the down direction.

Loved it when I was a kid, but as an adult playing it today, it feels like a step backwards in terms of what a beat 'em up can do. Simply put, the lane changes aren't revolutionary, the concept was used in Horizon (old obscure arcade game from 1985.) When other beat 'em ups just...walk up and down, this one with the lane hopping feels very off. It's especially jarring after playing Arabian Fight, which came out 4 years BEFORE this one and does a similar concept with sprite scaling, only it looks incredible because of the seamless transitions instead of lane hopping. Anybody that likes Guardian Heroes should play Arabian Fight to see the difference. Agreed with your very balanced take, overall. The rest of the mechanics are great, and the presentation is the game's main selling point. I just don't enjoy the tedium added by the lane hops.

I saw commercials for the first Virtua Fighter as a kid, but I didnt actually get to PLAY an entry until VF2. I remember seeing Shun Di doing his drunken fist practice in a college arcade while at a spelling bee, and I was blown away at how realistic and fluid it looked. I was hooked after that.
@ThatPunkYT13 күн бұрын
Really similar story to you here. Grew up seeing VF1 in Arcades and was blown away, eventually got VF2 on Saturn and played CONSTANTLY with friends, had VF3 on DC but didn't really care for it, skipped 4 entirely, and have fallen back in love with the series in VF5. So many fighting games have tons of meters and flashy effects, and I truly appreciate VF5 right now for its simple, streamlined, and elegant design.

Honestly I don’t remember that ever startling me but I did find that very aggravating as the game progressed. The best way to avoid that is to award each general after they receive a merit from winning battles. There are a few generals that leave no matter what like Santana (if you start the Vlad quest line) and Bastion (if you make him fight too much). I always stick Bastion in an isolated castle that nobody attacks. But yeah…lol….the developers knew what they were doing when they added that.

Nice to see you doing some VF content! I followed the same steps as you for the most part, first seeing VF1 in an arcade, later getting a Saturn, maining Goh in VF4, and getting extra into VF5 Final Showdown. Looking forward to REVO in a couple of weeks, maybe I'll see you on there too ya?

My earliest introductions to VF were already in my Dreamcast years when I saw the VF character toys in Shenmue, and my friend kept telling me how Ryo's moves were so similar to Akira Yuki's moves. My first time playing it was when I saw a VF4 cabinet in the local arcade in the early 2000s. I was in a "ninja phase" back then because of the Tenchu video game series, so my first pick was Kage, and then Sarah and Pai. I seem to always lean towards using female characters. I'm thinking about picking up VF5 R.E.V.O. just because it's way cheaper than Tekken 8 (understandably because it's based on VF5 which has been around for a long time). There is something about the VF games' more grounded appearance that makes them so attractive to me. Nice video as well. It's quite a nice change where you give the videos a more personal take.

You mentioned something in this video a couple times that I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone mention before. It’s that feeling when we were kids when we’d walk into an arcade and see a brand new game we had no idea was even on its way. The first Virtua Fighter I ever played had to be the first one I think. Thanks for the vid!

Though the Snes version is a lot more sophisticated, this will always have a special place in my heart. I was overjoyed when the Shadowrun Returns games came out as they are excellent.
