I have a very good friend with sometimes debilitating anxiety. This can mean being unable to move or interact and a lot of hand flicking. However, they have been teaching for years and have never had such an issue in the environment. It is controlled and emphasizes their delight in conversation and teaching while making it less likely to experience unexpected over stimulation. I think it has made them a thoughtful person that carries that to their classrooms, such a mindfulness for others who may have their own considerations. They are also the strongest person I know, not in a condescending way but in a legitimate "I would never want to compete with you in some metric on our successes" kind of way. Thank you for sharing the TEDx Talk. The example of a right handed vs left handed drive through was a great illustration and emphasizes the importance of accessibility.

@@jennagobrogge3249 it depends on what you prefer! I am not a morning person so I really enjoyed working 10-6 my time at one point in time (7-3 schools time) . It does take a little more mental energy to always be converting your time vs school time but you get used to it (:

when you say you are a "virtual school psychologist" what does that exactly mean?
@Amandaschoolpsych6 ай бұрын
Hello! So I essentially am a telehealth provider , I work from home and provide services online (including evaluations, consultation, meetings, observations, mental health support, crisis support, etc)
@Amandaschoolpsych6 ай бұрын
@@etamommy nope, I use software that has been tested and shown to be effective to not impact outcomes when given virtually and with an in person proctor who is trained and facilitates materials
@etamommy6 ай бұрын
@@Amandaschoolpsych Thanks for the reply Amanda. I am in the field and that is fascinating! Give yourself a pat on the back for being able to do such assessments in that fashion. That sounds tricky to me but during impacts of Covid -19 and distance learning we did some similar things. For initial assessments though we sometimes needed to gather some information in person and so some delays were necessary on those until parents were able to bring students in often masked to do one to one in person assessment.
@Amandaschoolpsych6 ай бұрын
@@etamommy yes definitely! I would said there are many arguments to be made and I also was confused when I first started but now I see how effective it CAN be when done right and with fidelity. I think the best power of telehealth practice is being able to provide services to rural districts who are unable to retain in person psychologist - so students are going without a lot of much needed support

Hi! I deciding on on being a school social worker, I'm a caseworker right now at n outreach and tracking program and work at a group home once a week as well. What would you say is the main difference between the school social worker and school psychologist? (I plan on working with younger grades)
@Amandaschoolpsych3 ай бұрын
Hey! So sorry I just am seeing this! It very much will depend on the state you practice in. In a lot of states social workers take on more of the counseling and crisis aspects, and then they also often are the experts on connecting families to resources in the community. Whereas a lot of states school psychologists work mostly in special education! So sometimes social workers will be the provider more for general education and school psychs more for special education students, evaluating for disabilities, and writing comprehensive psychoeducational evaluation reports. My preference is also to work in crisis and mental health’s support for general education along with special education. I’ll have to dive deeper into this in a video sometime but that’s my short generalized response (:

@@Shanellekyla88 hello! I feel this a lot at times! I have felt disappointed that our expertise and mental health qualifications can feel unappreciated outside of the school setting. In the state I currently live in, we aren’t really considered .. anything.. outside of school which breaks my heart. Hello Amanda! Wow, thank you so much for this SUPER informative video! I am a mature student who, in spite of receiving praise from instructors when I actually did the work, I also bounced around into a few different majors since I moved to the US at 23 years-old from Brazil, where I was a psych major. The result: after 25 long years of experimenting without much support, I was finally diagnosed with pretty severe ADHD (and very possibly anxiety as well). I finally decided a couple years ago to come back to psychology and had neuropsychology as my main end goal (get the ADHD hint here, of an almost 50-yr-old considering applying for a program she has absolutely no experience in?). I took the courage to meet with a professor in school who was so careful not to discourage me, yet was skillful enough to suggest other options that won’t take 15 years of training (which would get me to my 60s when I am finally licensed) and we came up together to the field of school psychology. I will continue looking into it but I would just like to thank you again for taking the time to share your experience, and I hope that other great videos were made since this first one (I believe you made this last year) ❤ - Best, Gigi.
