So is Nessa usually played by an understudy for Elphaba?

Shoshana giving the most layered complex version. This was basically like Shoshana going to the MD and saying hey I’m the cover, let me do some runs and everything’s fine. Still to this day, you will not hear any artist do that many runs in the WWOTE.

Deedee Magno Hall is one for the books. Acting, voice, phrasing, and inflection, to me she's the right combi.

She should never be teaching (hope this amazing talent is appreciated) she should have been one of our greatest stars but people don’t realise disgusting boundaries still exist. Is why we’ve not seen her doing so many varied west end show or just various shows in general. She’d have done much better in America but Britain still likes to see and promotes the usual look. Ask yourself why has such talent not been omnipresent!!!!

Isay and Milanie have the best technique (spot-on pitch and timbre) and cleanest execution. Sustainable and vocal-chords-friendly for multiple shows/repeats. Rachelle sounded pop and not the best for theatre.

Betty Buckley for me. I heard Elaine Paige too but in terms of vocal performance Betty Buckley is amazing . But in terms of acting performance Elaine Paige is the top pick for me. Jennifer Hudson is good as well in terms of the strong vocal emotional performance.

I have to give a special mention to Katie Rowley Jones (UK TOUR 2005). She was my first Belle when the show came to my.home town and she was wonderful! In fact this recording does not do her 100% justice. She is also a very lovely person as I got to meet her after. Her yellow ball gown was also the most movie accurate (though I also love the original Broadway dress) it had about 5 layers with a massive hoop underneath. I was in the front row so I could see all the beautiful details...I remember she said it was "very heavy. " Nic Greenshields was also a wonderful Beast and he and Katie had great chemistry on stage. ✨🌹

Elaine Page has a great voice, but I don't like the style she sings the song in. She overdoes it or something. That, "Touuche-a-meeEEe." Don't like it. There's far too many singers here to listen to the whole thing, heh. I saw Laurie Beechman when she was doing her Broadway run of this. It's the first voice I heard singing this song, and when it was live, my memory (wink) of it sounded better than what I'm hearing here from her. It filled the whole theater at that "touch me" part and I was thinking, "wow." Betty Buckley is the voice of the U.S. cast album, so I'm familiar with that and it sounds good to me. And Lea Salonga is always spectacular. There's a bunch here who can belt it out pretty good. But, I can't sit through 36 minutes of the same part of a song, so I can't judge everyone.

2002 Broadway was great. Unpopular opinion, I love Lea, but not for this song, I thought she was a tad boring. I prefer the thrilling belters. Isn’t it interesting how we all appreciate different things?

If the idea of cultural appropriation existed in the 80s we wouldn’t have Les Mis and it never would have spread around the world.
