Great effort mate. I really like your conversions. You had a good eye for where the parts come from. Where you pegged them as zombie parts they were. The original plastic zombie kit has a lot of charm albeit there are definitely good parts to the new sculpts too but I really liked the flexibility of the kit you have used parts from At a future date I would like to do a vampire counts army (beyond the minis I had already from the old Warhammer fantasy days) and I would definitely like to mix and match the Bretonnian men at arms minis with zombies and skeletons The monk you did would also work really well as a necromancer For the knights you could also use the men at arm heads with skeleton/zombie part heads. Also some of the new foot knights have the open visors and you could file off or cut out their current faces and replace them with shaved down skeleton/zombie faces Not sure if people are selling spare heads on eBay but surely it won’t be long until they do…also I suppose you could just buy a kit and add them to your army

It takes a while for me to answer your comments but they are really appreciated 😁 I'm pretty certain that the knights won't get many conversions. They will mostly get a few decorations as they (ironically) are not the focus of the army. But it does sound fun to have the helmets with wide brims on someone. There will however certainly be more conversions before it is all done and I would encourage you to give it a try, it is very fun!

I totally agree and to a large extent that is what my video "Rediscovering the past - The Old World is comming back" is about. I think there are many that are plain good as they are. Like the metal Ironbreakers or that nurgle man on the horse. That said there is an absolute ocean of sculpts that could benefit from a resculpt but, just as you are on to, rescultp is not the same as a new sculpt with a modern look. The vast majority are only to flat. It would be enough to scan them, put them in some sort of 3d editing tool. There you scale them in the flat direction and then angle the arms and legs a bit. The of cause cast with no mold lines 😩 That I would buy!

Flagellants are still sold under the AoS Free Cities line, thats propably why they aren't in any of the promo material for the Empire. Eitherway, they're still available. Bizarrely, the Empire Engineer no longer has access to mount options at all, so for now I'm not gonna get my hopes up for the mechanical steed to make a return. Maybe in the Arcane Journal as part of a Nuln themed army - but for now its a strange omission, it certainly sucks for people who still got that mini and can't play it for now - I guess you could proxy it as a Captain with handgun and/or brace of pistols. Eitherway, I don't think any of the other main armies suffered a cut like that. Treekin. A Treeman is a spirit who is bound to a living tree, a Treekin is a spirit animating dead wood. High Elves are an interessting case; the promo-material heavily features the Lothern Seaguard, Swordmasters and Reavers from the 8th editon 'Isles of Blood' starter set. What makes this noteworthy is that those minis share their sprue with the Skaven part of the box. In a first for the Old World, I think GW is going to remaster the plastic molds for those minis, so that they can release them seperately from the obv discontinued rats. I do find it strange that they feature the Stone Trolls in their promo pictures. I think GW's philosophy is that everything that you see advertised in the core books is stuff that is actually available. But Stone Trolls were Made-to-Order. I wonder if they originally were ment to come back for good. I expect GW is going to take inspiration from the Total War games when it comes to Chaos and the Arcane Journal is going to feature Norsca - an army with limited or no access to Chaos Warriors, with a heavier focus on Marauders and war beasts. I figure the second list is going to opposite direction, something like an exalted war host with access to daemons, daemonic cavalry, and war shrines. Beastmen are indeed not featured in the book. My theory is that they were a last minute addition to the game as GW couldn't decide whether to leave them with AoS or not.

You seem to be way more on top of this than me :) Thank you for the treekin clarification. If i can't buy the engineer I will kitbash it an run it as you describe! What would make me buy miniatures for The Old World? I do have a big 4th edition dwarves army, but I won't be playing The Old World, and GW won't get a single cent from me. 😄 There are many other game systems that are easier to learn, faster to play and don't require the players to spend tons of mony on new rulebooks, army books and models every couple of years, because units that were crappy in the previous edition are suddenly the best choice in the new edition. The Old World? Thank you, but no thank you.

Fair points indeed. It might sound wierd but actually playing the game is not a major goal of mine. My main game is Ymborg and that will not likely change. The Old World is more about painting the army I never had when I was younger so it will almost exclusively be GW miniatures. Thanks to GWs marketing in the 90s they will now get some money from me... Actually playing the game will be a bit of a risk. What if it is really booring 😆

I’m loving the made to order items that GW has selected so far. Admittedly some of them probably should have been the regular release items in my opinion such at the stone trolls over the common trolls. I’m looking forward to the dwarfs coming out next and seeing exactly what will be offered for MTO outside of I suppose the imperial dwarf prince and retinue…of which I might pick up the command group as I only have the champion and standard bearer plus lots of troopers not the prince or musician. I think the alternate armies for dwarfs will be a slayers force and something more mobile like a rangers army I enjoy the aesthetics of nearly all the armies but I haven’t got big collections of everything. I’m possibly inclined to jump on the bandwagon as each is released but that would be tempered each time by price and only really cherry picking the stuff that really appeals to me

Very interesting product. I had only really heard the name before not seen it being used. It does have that same leap of faith moment as the oils when you coat the whole mini but just like the oils it did clear up basically in the areas you don’t want it in. The process certainly seems quick, at least compared with the original time taken to paint the mini with regular colours. Bit of a shame it does leave some marks on the flat areas….maybe they could be dealt with by being a little more selective on where to put it at the first step? The darker stained parts on the flat area didn’t detract from the mini too much though Overall looks worth trying 👍

I would say it is even more of a leap of fate as you have a smaller window of opportunity to get things right :) Being more restrictive in application could be an option. But then you loose quite a part of the point. Perahaps a midway could be to imidiately wipe some off. I'll be doing some Skaven for a friend and that could perhaps be a good opportunity to explore some more as they are also a bunch where some stains will make no difference unless you tell someone that you did not want them there :P

Nice paint work there, quite a stylised result. I have never worked with oil paints on miniatures before. They do seem to offer some advantages in terms of the paint staying wet so you can easily blend for longer periods of time and even blend on the mini itself rather than just on a palette. 0:48 what parts are used on the guy on the very left with the drum?

It is the regular jesterly looking drummer but with some modifications: I added a few extra "horne things" from a spare jester head (no idea what their proper name would be) The "stick arm" is some random bit that I got in a second hand purchase of older skeltons and zombies. It does not look fully like a skeleton arm so I suppose it is a zombie arm. Around the top part there is a rope made out of regular sewing thread tied down with super glue. The drum is also strapped straight to his elbow with the same kind of rope I hope that was a satisfactory explanation :)

didn't realise it was from the kit it self. the arm is from the old zombies, but the tip looks odd. i don't know how i would find just the jester, so i might just try and sculpt my own jester. btw, i really love the aesthetic they have. but they do look really undead

I wonder why the comments are so negative. They're your archers and you should paint them however you want! We just buy silly plastic kits to have fun, and everyone should do whatever is most fun for them. I personally wouldn't choose this style, but they're mechanically well done and definitely have the desired grimdark/gothic horror look.

That is just plain true. I'm very happy to hear from someone who can separate those facts! I do believe that some people have interpreted the video as me trying to argue that Grimdark should be brought in as a core part of Warhammer fantasy. That was not really what I was going for. I understand that most people drawn to the game prefer the boxart but my question is why not more people go for the largely present Grimdark. Because, just as you say, anyone can paint their imaginary soldiers in whatever colours they like.

A very interesting concept you have spoken about. I think my goblin has been in charge for a while and part of that is because I have gained enjoyment from acquiring the miniatures and browsing through eBay listings etc to get old minis that have been long out of production for some time. All of this knowing that I wasn’t in a position to want to paint or play with any of them This time feels different however because I have now started to paint again and will try and be more conscious about getting plenty of miniatures in a playable state. In one week I painted up 10 archers that I think look pretty good. Once I have the full 24 done I will go back and add a little bit more for highlights etc. I had the same thoughts as you in that I hadn’t painted for years and the archers are the more simple minis to put together and get painted up. Seeing progress is important and will keep levels of motivation hopefully pretty high. I’m not sure I will be able to maintain a fast pace but I would like to put out a complete unit per month so that in one year I have two small armies on the table I’ve got to say that I’m a little jealous of all that snow. It is very hot here and I’m really looking forward to some cooler weather 😂

I'm very happy that I can evoke some thoughts! You don't need to tell me about the joy of eBay out of print miniatures, they are the ones that brought the need for a limit 😂 People often go on about Games Workshops fear of missing out but it's nothing compared to the proper old miniatures. "When will this Mordheim special character appear the next time?" I've only finished one batch of archers because I'm on skiing vacation (does require snow..) but I do feel that this is the way to go, at least for me.

I really enjoyed your video. Love the look of the men at arms mixed with the skeleton kit. A bit sad that Vampire Counts were made a legacy faction but Bretonnians do seem to lend themselves to being able to be downtrodden and or undead as a substitute for VC with perhaps vampires as the knights or barons. A great deal of artwork from the old days was quite dark in nature. The lore also had plenty of darkness to it with murderous cults lurking behind closed doors and Bretonnia itself was written up as a place of great decadence combined with decay. Newer lore seemed to do away with this a bit but when you look at those peasants they are certainly a poor looking bunch that well suits dark colours and general muck. Whilst true the miniatures themselves were often painted in bright colours, even chaos warriors, I think it is totally fine not to do it that way and probably a bit more true to the original artwork. I’m currently painting up a standard Bretonnian army with red and blue for the colours. In the future though I would love to use the Tomb King spare parts and kitbash men at arms and some knights in a similar fashion to what you have done 😀

Apparently I never responded on your great comment, just the kind that makes the effort worth! I'm actually starting to concider if I might end up playing my army as VC but then the archers will be out of place and there will probably be surplus horses as well. It would probably also be even more tempting if the Exiles did not exist. Yours, and others thoughts about the old times (~80s, not The Old World) spun me on into a small investigation. Hopefully it will be a kind of follow up video at some point :)

@@honestminis9530 I think an exiles list in particular could lend itself to a VC theme plus others have mentioned another region that seems to have gone a bit dark side (Mousillon). Maybe you could kill two birds with one stone with Bretonnians that have a strong VC vibe that can play as the standard army or exiles and also that could be used for the VC list. Knights to be used as Black Knights and vice versa and men at arms as zombies, skeletons or ghouls etc and the opposite. I look forward to a follow up video 😀

Very cool! Nice little conversions and a simple yet striking colour scheme! I would go for mud on the bases, e.g. from AK, and also smear that on the lower Part of the minis for more Grimdark. In my opinion, the desaturated green on the rim is fine - Grimdark go-to would be black though. I am btw painting Grimdark Bretonnians myself atm using a very similar black and yellow scheme - the colours of the cursed dukedom of Moussillon.

Mousillon seems to be a very recurring theme in the comments and I can really see why 🙂 It is actually a deliberate choice not to use mud or similar on bases and miniatures as I'm not aiming for Grimdark but rather the mentioned Boxdark. If you look close you will however see crackle paint appearing on a handful of bases. I'm considering making another video where I talk a little more about the reasons behind all of this.

One thing i have noticed about youtube mini painting tutorials is that If its from a Brit or a yank it will be a quick concise video. If anyone and I mean anyone from europe makes a video its will feature 15 mins of B roll footage while the creator searches his soul and ruminates on the question of what grim dark really means to them.

😂 I suppose I really fit that stereotype when the actual instructions are 30 seconds. On the other hand I never claimed to make a tutorial!

The whole of the old world was grim dark; Blanche, Mordheim, etc. Painting back in the day though was not. And then Bretonnia has always been about bright colors. Great video, and it’s making me consider doing a war weary Bretonnian army instead of a fresh and bright army.

Exactly! I do see the point of Bretonnia being the team of bright colors but was a bit surprised how little variety there is when the troopers are so weary-ready out of the box.
