@@hymnistic I think the "uplifting" (ta Tata Ta ta) pedal articulation is vital to imbue this piece with life, yet so often it missing. IIRC, you wrote of how important articulation is to you - something like that - and it shows here, IMO.
@hymnistic5 ай бұрын
@@JSB2500 For some reason I'm not as aware of my pedal articulation as I am playing it (compared to listening back)...this piece is a good one to help with that. I did a number of takes and when I was listening back, it surprised me that this one stood out for the pedal articulation. It was my last take and the earlier ones were less staccato. I remember somewhere in the recording process, I started playing it very staccato on the repeats to make it sound softer and just liked how it sounded. (I often play staccato as a way of playing "softer" on the organ). Listening to the recording, I would say it sounds like a cello section from a baroque orchestra! So, it wasn't till AFTER I was done, when I realized how good that sounded. I'd like to go back and rework it like that from the get-go, it would be even better (and it was you who said to use the videos to learn from!) I also envisioned this in strong-light pairs and think that helps to drive the rhythm and emphasize the hierarchy of beats. Going way back, it was Glenn Gould who was my first big influencer on Bach and he would throw in random slurs, making it almost syncopated. I liked that and did that too for awhile. I had a teacher who wanted me to make everything perfectly even. Not sure about that but I do strive for order and consistency more now. I definitely like to energize the notes with articulation and love the polyphony of holding notes down while playing others. If you compare my C major 9/8 prelude and fugue with others, you can hear how I "burst" on beats 2 and 3 and I think this emotes "joy". This is often my Easter prelude; kzbin.info/www/bejne/j2e3mGeXmKuBbqs

I like it very much Peter (and TBH I wasn't expecting to). Clearly you've gone to the trouble of mastering it, and hence can deliver it with great articulation, relaxed hands, engaging momentum, and so on. It made me think of what you said about your "Pulse method". I wonder if I can find it...
@JSB25005 ай бұрын
Ah yes, it was with our conversation at your Bach 578 video. "Pulse technique". I've saved the conversation now 🙂.
@hymnistic5 ай бұрын
Thank you, John. I love all his little manualiter pieces. They really get you excited to sing the hymns. His best one is on Lobet den herren and many churches still sing that hymn (Praise to the Lord, the Almighty). Part of building up the Pulse technique was working to play from the third knuckle. I noticed I've really built up a tall bridge over the years (knuckles are high). It's almost like holding a ball. It wasn't always like that.

I had to hear twice because it is not the only attempt to play Joy to the World in this style. However, have detected intelligent distinction in playing it. So my vote after hearing a few, very well done. After all you know as any music or song lover knows, music is the language of the heart. Yours is uplifting. 👍👏👏👏👏🎄🥰🎅🤶👍👍🕊

Thank you for your excellent comment. I have taken a few liberties with the score that make it unique... and making it uplifting was my goal. Glad you thought so. It is tricky to get those tremolos just right and to choose sounds and articulation that best simulate the feel of a string orchestra.

It's good for my playing to do these recordings, trying to get them as perfect as possible knowing that people can listen over and over again, picking out every little thing. Thanks Peter, absolutely brilliant voicing, clear and precise. I have no idea how you enable your brain to manage and separate the melodies required of left, right hands and feet simultaneously. Let alone how Bach was able to devise his music in the first place. Devine intervention, I guess?

I like your limpid play in which it is possible to listen each one of the parts independently and not overwhelming or "smashing" one each other. Only a small detail when I play it: I make three different sonorous plans for manuals and pedals in the prelude, while the fugue I add gradually more brilliance on the pedals, reaching in before last subject exposition in the bass, if possible, with a Subbass or Untersatz 32' and the last one adding a Posaune 32' for a grand finale.
