Looks like a lot of fun (you had stellar weather as well). I did a 100K time trial on the road once aiming sub-4 hours (nailed it). I would like to see what I could do on a track.

Nice one Andy I think you played that one pretty well and should be pleased with your effort and time. I never knew that the track had open days will have to look into it myself one day 💪

A great video and a great effort, congratulations! I definitely believe that you could do a sub-5 hours. Better pace management and if you did this in warmer weather, you could look at an aero optimized kit, over that time/distance, it would definitely matter. I guess I will have to add a 100-mile time trial to my goal events for 2025!

I suppose that in the end it all depends on whether your riding is race-led focusing on speed and sugar based nutrition with the latest, greatest, lightest, electronic equipment or perhaps you ride as far as possible to see new places and the beauty of our beloved island. Regardless of this i admire what you achieve but at my age i am incapable of much speed and envious of your relative youth or perhaps resentful of the loss of mine. Having said all that i could never have forced myself to ride all that way around a track so very well done.

I'm not a big fan of mudguards. I had some SKS guards fitted, and did enjoy the slight feeling of protection they seemed to offer for a while, but they inexplicably split across the rear guard on an event, so have never been replaced. I also hated the added hassle of cleaning around a mudguard with many a bashed knuckle that results. So I always have an Assaver, but to prevent my tools in the saddle bag getting trashed, put them in a water bottle container for the winter which is perfectly waterproof. Rear lights on the other hand just get soaked which is not ideal and definitely shortens their life. On the feet issue, I've recently discovered that a warm merino thermal sock inside my ordinary road shoe then a shoe over-sock then a thin (non-thermal) waterproof bootie works wonders. It makes sure all the insulation remains unsquashed so works well, while wind & rain is kept out completely. A lot cheaper than a pair of winter boots, even if there is some contortion required getting it all on. The area I have really suffered from in the past is my shins once they are wet as the cold breeze really chills them down. Thermal tights is the only solution to this.
@jonatkinson4544Күн бұрын
On the gloves question, Neoprene does actually work very well. It won't keep your hands dry, but they'll still be warm even when wet, which is essentially how Neoprene works in a wetsuit situation.

Have you seen the gloves from the Hunt guys? Dissent 133 is the brand. I’ve just bought them and they’re brilliant for warmth etc - the materials would suggest for water resistance too but I’ve yet to try that. Coming from that group though, I have confidence! For me, head, hands, and feet are a massive mental challenge - once they’re cold it’s all you can think about..

Oh no!!!! For one moment I though 'End of ANDYC....' was the end of a beautiful thing! Thank the lord it's just signalling a metamorphosis into some even better 😁 Greetings from a keen cyclist watching from Tanzania! Have been cycling for a few years now, and getting more and more caught by the bug. Of course, for all of the cycling addicts out there, media content is golden. As with many, I follow GCN videos, but through checking out some of the Mark Beaumont videos (and running out), I came across yours. What fantastic content you are contributing, so thanks SO SO much. Your material is truly inspirational, for all the reasons others have pointed out, and yes, very important to hear how things don't always go how we would like. I was actually born in Petersfield, live my first 4 years on Fratton Road in Portsmouth, then many years later came back to live for a short time in Bramshott, going to Liphook primary, so the videos of Butser hill and the South Downs are magic! In the last couple of years, I've had beautiful opportunities to do some biggish rides - like the Dragon Ride (Medio) in Wales, Spinney's Cycling challenge in Dubai, and lots of smaller club rides here around Dar es Salaam. Today is the eve of my first century ride, and your videos have been giving all the inspiration I need! Heading out tonight at 2am (it's super hot here during the day!), and hopefully will get the century done tomorrow, with a bit to spare. Can't wait, and can't wait to see more of your amazing videos! Thanks so so much, mate. James

Here’s my pennies worth. 1) Mudguards, best thing I’ve ever done, stay so much dryer and cleaner now in winter I should’ve done it sooner; 2) cold feet, I’ve gone from merino socks & tin foil with shoes on (with sole vents taped over), and overshoes over the lot which worked fairly well to now dedicated winter boots and it seems to be a big step up in keeping the feet warm 3)Hands, have even tried winter kite surfing gloves (ex kite surfer so have my winter kit still), and they do work but rely on moisture and heat to keep warm so take a while to do a reasonable jib but your hands end up looking like prunes and being warm but damp. Great Tips Andy in another great video, Chinese burns eh 😀, you could be in some pain 🤣

I have got handmade Honjo mudguards from Japan on my all road, they look so classy they stay on all year and come in handy during our "dry" summers. For jacket Gore tempest, very light and incredibly waterproof and wind proof with combo of Marino base/Jersey layers. I always carry neck buff and head warmer. Shimano caliper bolts respond well to copper grease as well as every other metal to metal interface. Above all enjoy the ride. Andy w

For those that live in the US, Showers Pass (not sponsored) is a fantastic brand for wet weather gear. Tips - 1) more layers that are thinner are generally better (warmer) than fewer layers that are thicker, plus, you can remove layers more easily if needed, 2) often I find that I don't need a thick layer around my body (chest area), rather, a garment that is an effective barrier for stopping the wind will be warmer than a thicker/heavier garment that does not stop the wind, 3) as with what Andy said, if my feet, hands and head (ears) stay warm, I feel warm.

I cycle in winter that means snow, ice and well below freezing temperatures too. I think around 0C with wet snow is the most difficult condition. I use different gloves depending on weather (the ones that work at 0C are no good at -10C etc). I use insulated shoes in spring/autumn and oversized insulated shoes that can take heavy merino wool socks when freezing. I have electric warmers too that I rarely use. At very cold temperatures insulating the sole from pedal is important (good wool sole inserts!) and when you need extra shoe covers, you need them even with good winter shoes if it is say -20C. I think warm core is important but also keeping arms and feet warm. If arms/legs are chilly, no gloves/shoes will help. Long socks can make a difference if feet are cold or not compared to short showe. I like merino wool layers, they are warm even when bit moist. The most difficult condition is wet snow rain. You need waterproof clothing everywhere and even if snow melts on neck, it will run into your jacket and towards gloves and feet. Spare gloves can be a real saver on longer ride. Windproofing your head can help a lot too. At 10C I tend to use windproof hat, at 0C I add rain cover on my helmet to limit wind more, below 0C add a windproof wool beanie replaces windproof cap. Unfortunately below 0C that means no tight clothes seem to work, just because of heavy wool layers all over.
