This film is far superior to the musical, mostly thanks to a leading lady who wasn't miscast.

0:53 The Only thing wrong is how they made the Asian butler acted. Racists. Cringey, annoying to see. That's why this failed. Stereotypes, not real how Asians generally are. Adult men don't giggle like a fool or school girls.

18:26 this was social faux pas to steal another's thunder.. instead of congratulating the author Auntie Mame.. she tried to take attention to herself with lame story.

Mame is a queer icon. And even though they don't come right out and say it in these movies; Patrick himself was also gay; which just heightened these characters' iconic status in the gay community.

Having read a biography about the first King of Hollywood (his second wife Mary Pickford was the Queen) Douglas was always an exercise type of guy. Always fit as his ability to do stunts and leaps without a double will attest. I learned he had a trench below sidewalk grade built at his studio deep enough to jog in without clothes on. He believed the skin must breathe and practiced naked exercise (discretely of course). The trouble was though he did not drink much, he was a smoker. Later on in his fifties the actor suffered a sudden coronary event and died after his career had basically slowed to a crawl with the coming of sound pictures. He reconciled (mostly) with his actor son Fairbanks Jr. before his death, and his son was kind in his praise in the interviews I have seen.

I have to agree . Both versions are excellent. But there was no one like Rosland for timing and comedy. She has been a lot on my mind as of late been sort of down and just thinking of her and what she has left us makes me smile. All life is just a banquet and most poor suckers are starving. LOL.

I have to thank Letitia for posting this with the FORCED wide-screen view, and the excellent copy it's from.. The detail, color, and beauty of it all is like it was filmed yesterday.. THANK YOU!! :)

I hope this movie does not get a remake. There isn't an actress alive today who can capture the spirit of Mame the way Rosalind did.

I don’t think I realized what that fish game was all about when I saw this as a little kid in the 70’s. I think as a Nonna now, I’d put him in his knickers and take him to school too. Naked fishes for little kiddles is a no no for me too. LOL

Actually, the film begins in 1929...these scenes are in the late 1930's, and the epilogue is 1946.

"Exclusively what and restricted to whom?" There was so much weight in that line. There was even more meaning with that little raised eyebrow when he said, "wrong side of the tracks."

This is why when I was growing up, I loved watching movies from the 40s, 50s, and 1960s because the overt racism and antisemitism were coded. And it made me pay attention to what adults were actually saying.

I love this movie simply a pleaser every time it is viewed. Glorias " and I stepped on the ball" was lifted and put in to Eddie Murphys "Trading Places" so effectively. For 1958 this touches on so many real social issues of the day, very bold
