Thus an intertitle was born to cover up Doug Fairbanks' use of off-color jokes, intended to provoke laughter from the hardened extras who were the rough-folk populating the scene. Instead the censors and lip-readers went nuts when they 'read' what Fairbanks had told his crew. So Anita Loos, the scripwriter inserted this intertitle, her husband John Emerson, director of "The Habit of Happiness" cut the offending lip-read words, and this was the result.
