What you found is the not very common Italian 16 A socket (P17 I think). Most Italian sockets are dual 10/16 A types P17/11 (the smaller ones in the cantina, next to the one you actually used). There's also a combined 10 A/Schuko socket (P30) that looks almost like a Schuko socket except for the earth pin hole in the middle and then there's the "universale" that takes both Italian plugs and Schuko but is slightly unsafe with Schuko plugs because you could touch exposed metal on the pins if the plug isn't all the way in. 10 A plugs have the same pin spacing as Schuko (German) plugs but thinner pins, 16 A plugs have the same pin diametre but wider spacing. I believe the original idea was that 10 A sockets were for lights only and lights were on unmetered supplies, only the power circuits were on a meter. Different plugs were used so you couldn't plug big appliances into the lighting circuit. As far as I know it's perfectly acceptable to go all Schuko in Italy but the best compromise is probably 10 A/Schuko as 16 A plugs are fairly rare and can be replaced with Schuko if you do get any. One thing to note though is that Italian sockets and switches are shockingly expensive in my experience, so ordering round back boxes, switches and sockets from Germany or Austria might actually be cheaper than buying locally. The only downside is that Italy uses all stranded wiring and German accessories are almost always designed for solid wires only, so make sure you order the version with screw terminals rather than push-in.

Hi Ragnar8504! Wow! Thank you for taking the time to explain this to us. This is indeed very helpful. We have done a ot of wiring in the past in the Netherlands -where we are from-, but we have never done this in Italy. In our opinion the current electrical situation in the cantina is rather bad. The switches are loose in their sockets and some boxes are hanging loose on the wall. I will open a box this week to see if the color coding is correct. We will have to do further inspection but my guess is that we will rewire everything. But first we will need to find an electrician that can make us a bypass so we have electricity on the apartment.

@@livinginabirdhouse Yes, I have also listened to your music on YT. I love it. Rebuilding Italy after the second world war resulted in a boom time. La dolce vita was real, at least up until the mid 80s. My sons were there only weeks ago and hated the place and people. As soon as the tyrannical EU came in, that was it for Italy, all down hill from there, especially in the big cities. I don't know what it's like in Holland, but you are a brave couple.

Isn't there a possibility to rent an enormous container (or 2 or 3) for trash, hire some guys to fill those up and let the trash company pick 'em up? In The Netherlands in works that way, but there must be something like that in Italy as well, right? RIGHT?! Hell of a journey, but it will pay off so much when all the shit is finished. Keep it up!

Hi, thanks for your suggestion. To our knowledge this is not possible for private individuals. There are agencies that supply skips to private individuals but then all raw materials still have to be distributed separately.

You do have a beautiful house! And you got it at a good price! Fixed and cleaned it would have cost you double, as you said. So clean up inside first, get the mechanicals going; heat, electricity, water; then get yourself living there; then tackle the outside and soon it will be beautiful! Sweat equity!

Just wondering why this 4 season part of Italy? No airport close-by nor train station and the weather is not much better than the Netherlands. A lot of property & house for the money is maybe the attraction but that you can find anywhere in the same isolated location my 2 cents. Anyway good luck, enjoyed, thanks.

Ciao !

Obviously the old man has a hoarding disease and you need to have patience with someone like that. You knew it was a hoarders dwelling and someone with that level of items needs help and can not do it themselves. I wish you all the best but you need to tackle it all one step at a time.

My family has the same situation with our new (to us) house. So much garbage! So much frustration! But we removed everything a section at a time and then started tackling one room at a time. Seeing the progress today is amazing and worth it. And some jobs can wait until you have the emotional and physical energy.

Realizing you may have already disposed of much of the left items, don't let the the enormity of the clearing job blind you to things you can use or pass onto others who can use. You may even find some "treasures." If they pay for metal recycling in Italy, you may be able to pay for somethings you need or just a nice outing for a meal. For example, IBCs with or without the plastic part (top of plastic part removed) make good storage bins for firewood, etc. Very old wood has qualities you can't find in new wood. You are likely to find pieces of wood that is salvageable, or partially salvagable, that can be used for projects. The grain on old wood is beautiful when finished. Once you've had a moment to relax from the craziness of the move in, you'll be able to focus & see things more clearly.
@livinginabirdhouse

Hi, thanks for your valuable tips and background information. The IBC tank, if we get them clean, can indeed be used for many more purposes. We are thinking of hydrophonics, And in the attic there is indeed some nice old wood, that we first have to clean and put through a thicknessing machine. We will certainly use it.

Never close on a house where your final conditions are not met. Especially, never leave access to the seller after closing. Rule #1 of buying. You say your deducting x amount of money for every single day they they delay closing. Watch them actually work.

We sincerely respect all your efforts, it’s mind boggling the amount of work and energy you both put into this “project”. Persevere and we know you’ll succeed… someday… I’m sorry, no tips. Stick to your plans and all will work out in the end. In the meantime this story gives us some amazing en very entertaining images and sound (also HEARING the stress gives an extra dimension to this adventure 😵‍💫). Keep it up, lovely people, and we will be following you ‘till the end… sort of… ❤️

Hi Rob, thanks for your kindness! Yes, there was indeed some frustration and some anger. It's real life and that comes with some stress every now and then. But we are also aware that it is not good for our health. So we try to keep it to a minimum and laugh about it. My ADHD just makes me intense "sometimes" :). Luckily Maggie has the gift of putting things into perspective and laughing at me a lot...

Im a single parent and im irish and live in America, i bought a house online in the south last year and had a similar experience, after driving for four days i arrived and the place was a disaster and filthy dirty, both myself and my daughter were very upset, we never settled in the property I did many repairs and listed it a year later, it was so exhausting and the whole home had horrible energy, the one tip i would say is take it as it comes and don't try to do everything at once, I'm sure it will be great soon.I hope to buy somewhere in italy someday soon, best of luck
