Im more interested in computing and learning to code , how important is it to know perfectly the contect of these courses ? Plus, what is the difference between Single-cell bioinformatician and a genome bioinformatician, are they that much divided in the industry? Could you give an example of each ?

Hi Georgia! Nice video. I have a question; is it viable to find remote jobs as a bioinformatician? I'm from Paraguay and my country is not developed in the field, but I'm not sure living abroad. I guess is kind of difficult because in industry the company wants to know you since they are going to work with you and of course paid you. So I guess it may be difficult. However I wanted to ask you since you know better. Thanks!

You hit the nail on the head with the things you mentioned Academia should ONLY be pursued if you TRULY have a burning passion for it because you will be solving humanity’s problems for a very severely poor wage. Egos DO run high in the “rat race” to prove your intellectual prowess. I recommend just sticking to biostatistics because bioinformatics is still at a relatively new and is mostly tailored for academia.

@junxu44385 ай бұрын
In the US, Ph.D programs pay a stipend of about $30,000 a year, not enough to get rich, but you won’t starve. I was working as a staff in a core lab, when our director left, I stepped in as the new director because I have a Ph.D.

4:05 Hey Georgia, I don't know if you mentioned the potential health risks of working as a wet lab-biologist (for example, dangerous chemicals, sharp objects, infections from samples etc.) in your previous videos. From this point of view, doing bioinfo is much more healthier than working in a lab, right?
@genomicswithgeorgia5 ай бұрын
Hey! Yeah excellent point. I would add though that the wet lab have many protocols, people, and departments in place to mitigate the risks in the wet lab. There’s not many people in bioinformatics forcing us to stand up every hour or to take walks at lunch 😂 I think the health risks of bioinfo are more long term when you’re older with years of built up bad posture 😂

Can you please guide me, if pursuing a Masters in Bioinformatics would be a wise decision in 2024, considering there's a lot of courses and learning content available online, that can help a student become a Bioinformatician? Does that affect whether or not we would land a job in this field, etc?
@genomicswithgeorgia6 ай бұрын
Hey! Doing a masters in bioinformatics is one (and usually the most common?) way to learn the basic skills to be a bioinformatician. Taught masters aren’t often accessible to everyone financially so I try to share the other ways in which you can go and find these skills. If you have the resources to do a bioinformatics masters this is a great step to becoming a bioinformatician and can get your CV past the first review for jobs but you might need to consider additional projects or courses you can do also to boost your chances (because there will be lots of bioinfo masters graduates applying for the same roles) :)

@@genomicswithgeorgia thanks a lot for responding. So basically self-learning wouldn't suffice, using Coursera and all the resources on the internet, and building a portfolio in Bioinformatics that way? Basically I'm confused about whether I should stick to self-learning and build a career that way, OR invest time, money, and energy in a Masters instead. My Bachelors is in Biotechnology.

I am a master's student specializing in virology, aiming to delve into bioinformatics, particularly biological systems. I have experience working with Python and R, albeit not in a biological context. I am seeking guidance on how to proceed further in integrating bioinformatics into my virology studies. Your insights would be greatly appreciated. Best regards
@genomicswithgeorgia6 ай бұрын
Virology and bioinformatics go hand in hand, look at how we used bioinformatic analysis of variants during the covid pandemic! It doesn’t matter if your python and R were in non-biological contexts, having that experience and your masters choice puts you in the perfect position. I would try to make your masters project computational and using bioinformatics , and always code your analysis in python or R (not excel). Try and seek out virology lecturerers/professors at your institute and ask if they know any opportunities where you could contribute to bioinfo in virology/just ask them general advice. It’s an Exciting path you’re on 💪

Right, so I have a bachelors in Physics and I'm currently planning to get my masters in Data Science. I wanna write my masters thesis in something to do with bioinformatics but the thing is, I don't have a biology background. This seems like a rhetorical question but do I really need a biology background to get into this field?
@genomicswithgeorgia7 ай бұрын
You’re on such a great track here! Writing a bioinfo thesis in your physics degree is a great way to start bridging the gap. There’s so many bioinformaticians who come from a physics background (especially in the more deep learning/computer vision space). One of my old colleges in genomics came into bioinfo from physics and did a masters bioinfo project. You don’t need a formal taught biology background, just the willingness to learn the biology for the projects you’re working on. Excellent plan, best of luck!
