I'm really struggling to spin cotton. My singles keep pulling apart, but when I up the twist, everything seems overspun (I get the little hard spirals). Also I can't get my drafting consistently very even. I'm really blown away by how much of a step backwards trying out cotton feels like. Do you have any tips (other than patience, which I'm working on)?

Hmm, It's hard without knowing what type of tools you're using. If the singles are pulling apart then there's not enough twist in them. If you're using a wheel, have you adjusted the uptake? I find it really hard to spin cotton with either too much or too little uptake as it tries to pull the single either too fast (leading to not enough twist) or too slowly (leading to too much twist).

Is the the diameter of the cotton exactly the same or is it all close to the same ? If I used a micrometer how much variation would there be ?

I'm sorry, I'm afraid I don't understand what you're asking. Are you wondering about the individual cotton fibers or the yarn diameter?
