Sabatini had a more demanding style in her game than any of the players discussed. The variety and style and not to mention it was a very physical game she used the court more that anyone and was awsome to see but I appreciate all the other players who she played against. Ill never forget this match,classic!! I was gutted that gaby did not take the title.Loved her style of play, chips & charges, spins & slices. Had she only a better serve, more heart, mental stamina. She certainly would have won more than one grand slam. She lost so many important matches she really should have won & this took its toll on her confidence & match toughness. Matches like this one Wim 91, she led 6-1 & 5- 1 against fernandez French 93 countless others. Gaby had a tendency to choke.

I wonder what any of Graf's oponents would think before their matches against her. She was so hard to keep up with, when she was in her prime, forget it, they would go through hell trying to find a way to beat her, she was so good..it was frightening.

I never warmed to Graf, but can now appreciate how good she was. If Sabatini had won that point, she would have had two match points. But Sabatini was never really in the Graf/Seles league.

Yup, 90 US Open, against Graf in the Final. I couldn't believe the first set was over so fast. Second set tie break, my heart almost stopped beating (I was rooting for Steffi :) and the forehand Gaby hit on match point, just caught the outside of the line :(

Gaby was phenomenal from the '90 US Open through this match,'91 Wimb.final.(only about a year)She just backed off from this aggressive, all-court,net-charging game and retreated to the baseline once again.She OWNED Steffi during the early 90s and was also beating Seles and Navratilova.She just couldn't maintain and never achieved the elite status of the afforementioned women.

This was a defining match for both players. Sabatini had Steffi on the ropes, and served twice for the title. However, a combination of Steffi stepping up her game, and Sabatini playing cautious, proved to be Sabatini's undoing in the final set. Sabatini had her chances to seal the deal. But Steffi turned the tables on Sabatini when it counted. The bottom line: Sabatini played well, but Steffi played even better. After this match, Sabatini never really challenged Steffi at Slam events again.

Quickguy, your on the right track here. Sabatini lost to Steffi Graf the first 11 times they played. For their career head to head, Graf beat Sabatini 29 of 40 matches. Sabatini did have a nice run against Steffi in Florida. But, at the majors, Sabatini was no match for Steffi. Sabatini could usually take a set off Steffi, but Steffi would blow Sabatini away in the final set of most of their matches. Had that '90 US Open went 3 sets, Steffi would have physically beaten an exhausted Sabatini.

You cannot count Steffi out. Seles, Sanchez Vicario and Navratilova each at their own time knew that they had to go for the kill in every shot against Steffi. In the majors Graff would simply elevate to another level. The point is you had to get to Steffi's level first, but the toughest part was to stay at her level for 3 sets. Steffi...WHAT A WICKED FOREHAND!!!

Gaby did own Graf - beat her 5 straight time between 1990-1991. Also at one point beat her 7 of 8 times. I think Gaby had more to do with Graf losing the No 1 ranking than Seles did.

I am just stating the facts in 1991 this was the year Sabatini was supposed to be number one. In fact, after Gabriela destroyed Seles 6-3 6-2 in the Italian Open final all she had to do was win her third round match at the German Open to become NUMBER ONE. But what does Gaby do? Gaby gets DRUNK on her 21st birthday LOSING to Huber in the third round. I am tired of people making excuses for Sabatini in 1991 she served for this match TWICE and still LOST.

This match ENDED Sabatini's chance of being a champion Gabriela SHOULD of won this match. Sabatini had two chances to win she served for it twice yet BLEW IT BOTH TIMES. The reason Sabatini did NOT have the nerve of a great champion she was below Arantxa, Steffi, and Monica in a BIG WAY. Sabatini was a career seminfinalist she beat MOST of the women but not the top players like Monica, Steffi or Arantxa she lost when it mattered the MOST in the semis and finals.

This loss ended Sabatini's reign over Graf. Sabatini only beat Graf one last time after this match. Graf turned the tables completely after this victory. Sabatini was really challenging Graf until this match. Sabatini should of won this match and she would of IF SHE HAD A BETTER SERVE. I don't know why Sabatini didn't work on a better serve? You need a serve to be a champion and she wasn't that great anyway.

Sometimes i wonder "what if" Sabatini won this match? Sabatini HAD Graf's number until this match after this loss she was never the same. Sabatini had the talent to match but not the mind and game of a champion. Sabatini did not work on her serve her serve is a complete joke.

Sabatini was talented I NEVER said she wasn't. However, in terms of mental toughness Sabatini was weak. Also, why didn't Sabatini GET a better serve? It is just so strange that Gabriela NEVER had a good serve.

Sabatini SERVED for this match twice she should of won it. Sabatini should of been more then a one slam wonder she had the game but not the mind of a great champion. Arantxa was definitely better then Sabatini.

She wasn't THAT great?? Name anybody else who has beaten Graf 5 times in a row. She had ALL the shots in the book and she was an all court player. Her only liabity were 2nd serve. Well, she wasn't mentally tough as Graf or Seles but honestly who can?? About the serve: she tried to improve it with all of her coaches but she had a problem trying to synchronize her upper body which was a very very difficult problem to solve.
