Super great video looks like you ran into all the same problems that I did and I liked a lot of your Solutions I have a few of my own I decided to just build a traveler to be able to adjust my sheet in and out the aka I'm hopefully going to have time to put a video together on my installation I love the fact that Hobie's written instructions and their video instructions don't match. The last time I had to redesign a Hobie Spinnaker system was with the Hobie 21 for the ultimate Yacht Race back in the late 80s and that's vinegar system was in fact more poorly designed than this one. I think I've got a fairly nice take on it I actually do run everything from the back of the boat and having the traveler makes it pretty easy to move the low friction ring In-N-Out depending upon what point of sail I am on. And I super don't like the little posts screwed into the office particularly out by the corner because you don't have to be an engineer to know screwing into the side of that corner makes spot. And the whole installation could have been done with only 4 which would be the ones for the swivel cams cams And for the recovery block on the AKA in the middle is a ronstan cheek block which is a great block when you use it for what it was intended for it was never intended to have a wine lead 180° around it in that way.

What was your rational for deciding on the PNW charge controller vs MPPT
@brettthomas72798 ай бұрын
Thank you for the comment. I didn't do a comparison, I picked this particular controller because it was an inexpensive combo with the solar panel on Amazon. Is there a better controller to use? I want to rebuild my solar with newer technology if available.

How old is your son? I'm trying to convince my 15 year old to try it.
@brettthomas727910 ай бұрын
He started when he was 17. I know many other successful 15 year olds, that’s a good age to start. You each have to learn to be a team that happens to be father son.

Hey Brett, great information. I just bought a used 2012 Hobie Tandem Island and we're taking it to Marco Island in Florida for Christmas. I'm going track the Hobie parts numbers down for the ones you recommend, but if you happen to have them handy I'm sure it would be awesome to have a list for myself and others. I haven't seen anything else like this so again, very helpful. Thanks either way.

Thanks for the great video and explanation of your food system. In a past life I have spent long weekends remote camping off the back of a small bore motorcycle. Now I sail, and the EC is really speaking to me. Again, thanks for all your vids, not just this one.

Hello Bred. Who likes to carry basically a second TI in parts on sailing events? I modified in addition: ● FILLING BOTH OUTRIGGERS WITH BUOYANCY FOAM. ● SEALED SHOT REAR HATCH. ● INSTALLED 2 AIRBAGS IN HULL ● INSTALLED AUTOMATIC BILGE PUMP ● INSTALLED OUTSIDE (rope less) RUDDER CONECT WITH POLE ● MAST TO HULL CONNECTED WITH ADDITIONAL ALUMINIUM BRACKET PLATES ....and much much more. ●●●●●● Just finished the 200-mile race in Spain 🇪🇸. Nevertheless.... truht be told. The Hobbie Tandem Island is definitely NOT seaworthy by any means. The lousy "D" rating speaks for itself. Racing with TI'S can be done, but a much higher risk is involved compared to my WINDRIDER 17, for instance. My TI is heavily modified, but the bottom line is that whatever you do, something has to give, and many things WILL brake People should take the Hobbie Tandem for what it is. Basically, it's a sailing kayak for sheltered waters in low wind and flat water. Way yo many issues. Way to many weak points. Simply way to overstated. Will I race on a TI again???? Absolutely not. There are many better choices available for much less money to spend to sail better, dryer, and most of all, SAFER on open waters. Thanks for sharing and fair winds.

The event..... We do... I require... Our people.... Must have........ The rules are....... But it is super expensive to anticipate. Classified as "not supported" event. Seems like a conflict of interest right there.

Good stuff brother! Just an FYI, my handle didn’t break, the screw that holds it on sheered. So no on the water fix. If you carry an extra steering crank you can fix it on land, otherwise you’ll have to MacGyver something. I’m making a new one with a thicker screw. 👍🏼

Thank You. I just noticed that my boat was in your 2020 Everglades Challenge beach walk video at 31:50. I have the yellow TI with the blue flag & square knot flying above it. I just returned from participating in the 2023 Everglades Challenge in that same boat. The Florida Bay was nice for this trip.

@@brettthomas7279 Thanks for the comment. I am in the Keys currently. Sailed up from Plantation Key to Key Largo Buttonwood Bay and pulled into the EC 2023 finish line on Sunday and was able to speak with a few of the TI sailors who were packing up their gear. I hope to post a few interesting videos in the days to come. Stay tuned and keep the videos / interviews coming. Perhaps our paths will cross some day! Currently sailing a new 2022 TI fitted out for offshore sailing.... including a 2.5 hp Suzuki outboard....never leave home without it ;-)

Great Interview Brett, You're a natural!

This was great, loved it! How very interesting, all of this interview. I adventured as a little kid. I was caught riding a rancher's horses. The rancher's daughter caught me, it turns out she was my Sunday school teacher. I could keep riding, but I had to complete chores around the stables. I enlisted right out of high school; Army, Infantry, Airborne, Vietnam. My parents were both WWII vets. I've done adventure races all over the world, many of them with my son and some with my daughter. I've done the Everglades Challenge twelve times with my son. We are blessed to say, we've finished every time. I work out just about everyday, love kettlebells, love walking. The Everglades Challenge will always be central in my memories of great memories. Chief created a wonderful event.

I will be creating another video this year of our packing technique. There are several different methods/ philosophies to packing this style boat depending on your strategy. If for some reason you can't access our 2021 race report, send me an email at [email protected] and I will send it to you.

Can I ask what brand dry suits and PFD's you both used for the race and if you have a complete equipment list available anywhere that would be wonderful. I read most of your thesis and must say it's very well written and has a great deal of information in it (thankyou!), and you detailed some of your gear but not all of it. I'm planning on doing my first EC in 2022, hopefully with a crew member, but if not then solo. I'm not doing it in a Hobie, but in a small sailboat/dory so I'm just trying to gather as much information as possible. Thank you, Ed
@brettthomas72793 жыл бұрын
Ed I have an Astral Green Jacket PFD and Chase has a Patagonia PFD. The dry suit is a Stolhquist EZ. The official packing lists can be found on the Watertribe website. Download it and start laying out what you have now. It's never too early to start training for the EC. Items that have multiple purposes, save weight and space. Less weight is a faster boat. Less gear is a more organized way to get through your event. My tent 3 years ago weighed 5 lbs. My current tent can be stuffed down to the size of a nalgene bottle, it weighs less than a large McDonalds soda, and it sets up in less than a minute. The down side is the cost. You can really spend a stupid amount of money on the gear if your wallet and significant other will support it. If you want a more detail conversation about my personal packing list and what has worked for me, send me a message at [email protected] and we can get together. I am a gear junkie and I use all this adventure stuff year round with my Scouts, not just once a year on the Everglades Challenge. I like to find new stuff to experiment with and abuse it to see what works and what doesn't.

Thank you for highlighting one of the great strengths of Watertribe. I wonder if any comparable event does these thorough safety checks. I've passed inspection 3 times and learned something new from the inspector each time. I learned new stuff here as well.
@brettthomas72793 жыл бұрын
I would hope that every event does some type of inspection. I do see a required gear list in a lot of the other Event information pages. I have no idea if anyone actually checks. I know there are some Tribers that have entered a wide variety of races. maybe they can chime in.
