I truly believe that people have a meaning in life. Something that is for them. Some never find it but this young man really have found it and he found it emediately. You can learn to play guitar and become a good player but this is more than that. It comes naturally for some and it’s because it’s meant for them. It can’t be learned, it’s something that comes naturally. Either you have it or you don’t. And yes, he IS phenomenal. Only 14 years old and plays like he has done it for 30 years or more.

My best friend (Alonzo) was their youngest brother. There was a big gap between the youngest of the Wilson brothers to Alonzo so he was not in the band. We roadied for them on a few occasions. Wilfredo “Wolf” Wilson taught me some bass chops. But I was not serious enough. So easily distracted back in the day. I stayed with their Mom,Dad (Wilfred and Doris Wilson) and Alonzo for about 2 years. They treated me like a son. In my opinion Mandrill was sorely underrated because they were ahead of their time. Folks didn’t really know how to market them properly. So they gained a cult following. You’ll understand what I mean when you listen to their body of art. Fat City Strut, Mango Meat, Cohelo, and Love Song just to name a few. They tried to be more mainstream on their “Energize” album. And got decent air play from their song Starry Eyed. But Arista records in L.A. didn’t do much better for them. I look back on those times and didn’t realize “where I was”. That happened to me quite a bit back in the day. Me and Alonzo helped setup equipment back in the day at a music festival block party type of concert in downtown L.A. and Mandrill played last. It was to end at 10pm. Well, things ran behind so they went on late. They were in the middle of their last song. It was Fencewalk. The cops pulled the plug right at 10. Mandrill kept playing and EVERYBODY kept grooving and dancing until they finished that song!
