The most popular books on GoodReads are almost a list of books to avoid for me 😂 I think there are a lot of teenagers on GoodReads so I do not trust their taste. That said, I really enjoyed A Little Life and The Secret History. Taylor Jenkins Reid sets her books in really interesting eras and they are decent trashy page-turners, I didn't like Carrie Soto though. Richard Osman is the best-selling author in the UK by a country mile, and his books are wonderful. Both those Madeline Miller books are great, I actually prefer Circe. All Systems Red is great, the whole Murderbot series is so fun and they are very short. I Who Have Never Known Men was my number 1 book of 2024! Lots of people don't like Frankenstein, two of my booktube friends have recently trashed it so I wouldn't feel bad (I hated Dracula). Book Lovers is well worth a read, I want to get more Emily Henry.

Taylor Jenkins Reid is really good! The best for me is “the seven husbands of Evelyn Hugo “! Also good reads is not the most reliable platform to be called the better readers books!

7 Husbands of Evelyn Hugo is the only TJR I have read and I LOVED it ( I also had a period where I was really into deep diving into the lives of old Hollywood stars so I kind of knew it would be fun for me). It's shocking this one wasn't on the list since I feel like it's her most popular book, but, to your point, this list felt suspicious to me - I agree Goodreads might not be the most reliable platform

The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires is more gross/creepy than scary! I also am a big crybaby and can’t handle scary stuff but I made it through that book with just a slight case of the heebie jeebies 😂

Ok this is very helpful! I feel like I could handle that - and I like the idea of dabbling in the horror genre without completely traumatizing myself and giving myself nightmares haha. I think I'm gonna add it to my TBR :) Maybe something to save for the fall?

That shop looks amazing, like Strand Books. Norwegian Wood was the first Murakami I read and I have the fondest memories of that one, maybe because of The Beatles, it's probably the least weird one I've read. Master and the Magarita has so many nice editions, I have the Penguin Classics Deluxe and it's a peach too.

I am the opposite with audiobooks, I prefer to listen to light fiction and struggle with non-fiction, I think because I like to look stuff up. That said, I am training for a marathon at the moment and always listen to an audiobook, so maybe I should try the Murakami book 😆I had tickets to see Patti Smith at St Paul's Cathedral a few months ago and I had to cancel for a work event, I was gutted, I've always heard great things about her books. I remember really liking Lolita when I read it, Nabokov seems like a bit of a jerk though, he was always badmouthing other authors.
@RicksReads
@RicksReads 27 күн бұрын
Whoa! Amazing that you are training for a marathon - that's major! I definitely think you'd like Murakami's book then and there's not much (that I remember) needing to look up in it since it's mostly just a memoir about his life and his relationship to running. Bummer you had to miss out on seeing Patti Smith - hopefully you'll get another chance in the future - what a fascinating life she's lived. I didn't know much about Nabokov personally, but a quick google let me know there are whole articles about how he is a jerk... seems he did have a bit of an ego and a problem with lots of other authors from his time 🙃

Small Things Like These is great, if you like that get Foster which is even better and then watch the film of it which is amazing. Open Water is good, and as a Londoner I felt like it was a very accurate portrait of modern day London. I have a very low tolerance for relentlessly miserable books, they almost never work for me, A Little Life is an exception, it's incredibly readable and the friendships in it are beautiful.
