11 that seems good for higher leagues but what about when you are doing a saved from extended lower leagues of england all players are around 9 ish or so across the board. The other key issue is the personality that will drive in large part if the player will develop or not.

I do agree. There are definitely red flags personalities that should avoided. The way I see it with those core attributes, anything less than 10 means more often than not they are failing to execute (whatever it is) and with Decisions especially, it's always good to have 11+ But in lower leagues (which are very fun to play in btw, but less so fun to recruit in) you're totally right, 8s and 9s in some areas is good enough.

I think a big part has to do with injuries, which can happen anytime and having only one backup per position who is most of time only 3 stars is not going to make it difficult. Also you always need an old player, with good personality for mentoring even if it no longer a good player for first team.

I have always thought STAR ratings are pointless,THEY ARE NOT, I've adopted them this season and picking the 11 best players star ratings, and then placing into formations, some strange, but my word they have worked.

We love 3 at the back - Two WCB either side of a CD Stopper, then two Wing Backs with either one or two DMs and (this year) we've been partial to 2 AP behind a striker to complete our 5-2-2-1.

How do I find players who will be willing to play as a backup/squad player in the market? Almost every player in the scouting range wants a regular starter playing time only occasionally I got reports of a squad level player (I am fairly new to this game)

My personal approach here is to find players that are already dissatisfied with playing time, and/or turn to the end of contract hires on either 29th December or end of May if you're playing in England. Signing players who are out of contract gives you a little more wiggle room when it comes to lessening their playing time expectations and make sure you talk to the players' agents first too to claim their expectations for playing time are too high: helps manage things!

Great video! I rarely use counter-press since an higher closing down + high press already achieve it with greater success without sacrificing defensive responsibilities. I've noticed counter-press is useful when the opposition is sitting deep in a 3atb or similar formations, however, when matched by a similar opponent it leaves you much more open than you could be. I love Hold Position for seeing out games. I normally lower tempo + pass range, then it's slowly lower closing down, change to a mid and lower block, however, I continue to use a high line to compress space; and only then do I begin to lower mentality. I've noticed a drastic change in mentality usually makes players prone to mistakes, which they normally wouldn't have been. In general, I wholeheartedly believe most team instructions aren't as impactful as people make them out to be and tactics without them can succeed simply on the principle of good role combinations, with the caveat that this mostly concerns offensive tactics. In regards to incompatible roles, the Halfback on a side as opposed to middle is useless if you have a defensive fullback there. Not sure if they drop in the middle if you run a IFB either.

On the incompatible roles - I think the duty matters too. I often play a Mezzala on support on the same side as an Inverted Winger on attack but I wouldn't play a Mez Att behind a IW Sup. Theoretically the same for an Inverted Wing Back, as an IWB Sup won't get high enough up the pitch to clash with a IF Att. Great video though - I'm kicking myself for missing how easy it is to just change transition instructions in game to be more defensively sound and safer in possession.

Defensive challenge! I’m trying a save using the catennacio preset and defensive mentality. In Italy, of course. I haven’t gotten far but the first 2 matches did not go well. 😆

Long throws may not be the most important stat, but it can be extremely useful. I typically played retain possession on all throw-ins but changing my attacking throw-ins to long throws has resulted in more scoring chances.

Defensive mentality (and defensive tactics in general) not being particularly viable in FM is one of the biggest flaws in the match engine at the moment - Direct Counters can work, see Mustermann's Sampdoria videos for evidence of that, but the likes of Mourinho and Conte's tactical systems should be just as viable. They're some of the most successful coaches around after all!

Great info, thanks for doing the research for rest of us. Defensive midfielder would be interesting to know. However there are many great players who might be injury prone (orange not red color, and they can be managed by lower intensity of training, giving them more rest). The only one's to stay clear is if they have a bad personality, bc it is very difficult to change those. Consistency, Important Matches and determination can also be increased if you mentor them with someone with influence in your squad and strong in those areas.

Over many years of honing my scouting I do something very similar for any position. The most important attribute you missed though is the one you cannot do much about. in the short term...............Affordability.. Brilliant work. Thank you for your time and effort.

Wing Backs: Hug the touchline, Cross More Often, Shoot Less Often and Aim for Target Forward Wide Centre Backs: Stay Wider, Close Down Less Often Centre Back: Mark Tighter, Close Down More Often BWM: Close Down More Often Advanced Playmakers: Stay Inside, Take More Risks Advanced Forward: Shoot More Often

2 players for every position (22) one extra youth def, mid and fwd (3). Total 25. Of course 3rd GK is youth player so no need for registration

This is such a good topic to analyse. Managing a winning Prem/Champions League team I recently completely changed my roster building: I have some 18 "senior" players and some 15 u21 who can actually step in. I loan some other 15 players 18-25 and keep a bounce of 18-21 who are not good enough for the senior team in house. It seems to be working fine for the moment.

My main attributes for a Keeper (regardless if he's a Sweeper Keeper or not): Command of the Area, Kicking, Reflexes, Concentration, Positioning, Agility.

I am still skeptical that the simulation tests can be applied to the real game. Obviously simulation has a simplified algorithm, it does not really play every game minute by minute. My Verbruggen in 2035 has only 13 agility and he is a monster of a GK. I am still much more inclined to consider the player as a whole and put him in that very specific system instead of evaluating attributes in a vacum

One thing I'd love to see is the ability to train players in your team to be coaches/managers I don't mean just hiring them as a reserve or assistant coach for your team but actually upgrading coaching abilities to become the next Xabi Alonso, Pep Guardiola, Ruben Amorim etc...

Fastest and most convenient way in my opinion: Start career, choose team later, make sure to include Iceland in active leagues, select 6th May 2024 as start date (Iceland), start game, select the nation you wish to manage at the Euros and you're basically ready to pick your squad.
