I like my Mozart crisp and bright, with fast tempi. I don't like these sorts of people who play his concerti uniformly mezzo-forte and moderato (at uniformly Medium Volume and Medium Speed); it is most boring! Sadly, I am always mercilessly flamed if I criticize a performance, but people need to carefully listen to a lot of different performances of the same work, in order to develop an appreciation of what is, and what is not, a good interpretation.

It seems such an oddly unmusical performance. Stunning technique as always, but just seems lacking in some respect. He can play with great emotional range. This was one-dimensional.
@sacrilegiousboi978
@sacrilegiousboi978 Ай бұрын
@@pamelahood I get what you mean. Unlike many of Kissin’s interpretations this was very “no nonsense” - but for some reason it works for me here. I think some people do too much with it, yes maybe Kissin could have done a bit more but some pianists make me feel seasick (pun intended) with how much excessive rubato and tempo changes they do with it. I think Kissin meant it to be a flashy crowd pleasing encore performance and nothing else, the Clair De Lune performance he did right after was extremely emotional and sensitive. I do find it very satisfying to re-watch this purely from a technical standpoint also.

I am preparing this piece for a local performing arts festival and have been playing along this video almost every day. As you can imagine, I have listened to a lot of different pianists performing this piece, but Kissin's interpretation seems the most loyal to Mozart's work. First, the speed: he doesn't play it too fast like other pianists. I can hear every note and follow the musical story. It's as if he doesn't need to show off his skills with high speed. Second, his balance with the orchestra. He plays with the orchestra instead of the orchestra accompanying him. There are 2 parts in the first movement where the soloist accompanies the orchestra that plays the melody, and he respects that. Other pianists play those parts loudly as if they are playing the melody. What I love about Kissin, in general, is his humility and musical faithfulness to the pieces and the composers who wrote them.

Concert exceptionnel ! À la fin du concert, Vers la flamme op. 72 est interprété avec une maestria et un lyrisme transcendant ! Je ne connais aucun pianiste actuel qui est capable en concert d'une telle maîtrise et passion dans cette pièce mythique de Scriabine !

One of my leaving cert students played this in her practical exam last month on a digital piano. She is 18 years old and from Poland and her talent for this Liszt piece was amazing. But here Kissin is playing a grand piano, so the grand piano sounds a lot more rich and powerful than a digital piano. The problem about digital pianos is that the timbre doesn’t actually match the lightness and even the powerful emphasis on acoustic pianos like the grand piano. But of course, she did amazingly well, so next time, I hope she would try this piece on a grand piano, but she’s just started grade 8 though. This piano player here has a huge master of theory, so unfortunately at the moment, this student from Poland, she wouldn’t yet be at that level like Kissin, but let’s not make a comparison because she has a different piano journey than Kissin. Competitions are typically in sport, not music. Music is rather seen as expressive and conveying emotions rather than skill and showboating

Perfect tempo. Usually mozart gets tempo butched. He is a singing composer and the essance of his "singing" goes lost if it is too fast.

This is one of my "concert pieces" that I can pull out of the hat, maybe not quite to the Evgency Kissin level however. I learnt this on a Bechstein with my piano teacher, the voicing is so different from the Steinway sound. I'm lucky enough to enjoy an Erard grand piano of the same era, which Lizst also played (and often destroyed). I wish more people would appreciate the many different styles of piano.

This is truly Mozart’s music. This man plays every note correctly, every rhythm, every pause, with a calmness that makes it seem effortless. Especially in the Rondo alla Turca section, he takes Mozart’s already perfect piece and makes it even stronger.
