How do you reference or index previous entries / journals, so you find specific topics or ideas?
@Carsonial2 күн бұрын
All I do is write the year on the bottom of my journals (on the visible part of the pages when it's closed). If there are certain things I know I'll want to reference then I'll make a star or underline the entries. A lot of the ideas/topics that get worked on end up in my back pages. Usually at the end of the year I'll read through them and condense the best stuff into a back page on my new journal for easy reference. I don't have a specific way to index everything. At the end of the year when I read back through everything, I'll usually just see if there is anything that really sticks out to me that I want to carryover into the new year and noodle around with.

I have both Leuchtturm1917 and Moleskine notebooks - to be honest, I didn't realize that one of my notebooks was a different brand until a few days ago when I was looking for Moleskine alternatives, saw LT1917 recommended, and then noticed one of my notebooks WAS one. I had it buried away in my desk because I'd forgotten about it, but I've since pulled it out and been writing in it to fill it up. It's about half-way full at this point, maybe 2/3. My thoughts! - Leuchtturm1917 has better paper in general, and especially for Fountain Pens. Fountain pen ink tends to be quite wet, which I've noticed will cause bleed through regularly on my Moleskine, which I'm not a fan of. Even with heavy writes, swatches from a cotton swab, and really soaking the page, I haven't seen my inks bleed through on the LT. When it gets really wet, they'll definitely warp in those places, but never bleed. - I'm a dot grid kind of guy, and both my notebooks use one. The Moleskine's dot grid doesn't have any margins, whereas the LT does, which I like. I also like the pagination at the bottom. - The bookmark being longer on the LT... This one threw me off for a second. Why is it so long? I don't like the length when it's closed! Then I realized it's a great length for being able to pull the ribbon all the way from corner to corner and still be able to keep a good grip with thumb and two fingers, which makes opening the book with the ribbon a lot easier. I almost trimmed it, but decided to keep it. - The cover material and spine: I've noticed that the LT has held up better generally. I've had both notebooks for a while. The LT has been with me through a move, and has definitely been something I've carried around and written in for nearly 4 years. The first entry in it is dated early 2021 (in fact, I found this out because I was looking for samples of my old handwriting, before I started using cursive, and lo, there they were. I started that notebook in print, and transitioned to cursive primarily using it). The cover material is a bit softer on the LT, I think both are considered a fake / patent leather / PU leather, though the Moleskine's generally has a harder texture to it. I like both, but I prefer the LT. The spine is an interesting one. This is also partly about the binding in general: The LT's spine is flat, and has remained flat, while the Moleskine's had a slight curve to it (I think... I hope...) and over time a large crease has formed in the cardstock of the spine, where it has basically bent. Also, opening the Moleskine ALWAYS results in a cracking noise as the spine is extended, whereas the LT is silent, and I think this is mostly due to how the spine's binding is connected to the covers. Bonus thought: I appreciate that you included some context for why you're pronounce "Leuchtturm" as "Loistrum", From everything I've been able to tell, your pronunciation is close, but there's a couple subtle differences with how German is pronounced, especially in this spelling. The first syllable's vowels are pronounced sort of half way between "oi" (that oy sound) and "ai" (as in the word "daimon" (pronounced closer to die-moan, "ai" in Latin based languages makes kind of a long 'I' sound) - however, German is definitely not a Latin language, so unfortunately neither of these will work, and we have to listen for something that's kind of close to both. So the first part of how you're pronouncing it is certainly close enough. Regarding the second part, where you're saying "strum" (S instead of an SCH, and RU instead of UR) - these aren't quite how it's being pronounced. Because German has different pronunciation rules than non-German speakers are used to, it can sound a little blurry hearing a German speaker saying the word. Really what's happening is that the "S" sound you're hearing is produced by the CH, and it's closer to how we might say SH or SCH, like the word "shush", but a bit more glottal / mouthy if that makes any sense. The UR part gets sort of blurred together. Saying it as an RU (trum) is certainly close enough, but it might help to think about the "turm" part of the word as sort of one big thing. I'm not sure if I'm explaining that well at all... There's a helpful youtube video about how to pronounce this word which seems like it's probably extremely close to how the employee you heard was pronouncing it, but will be more clear, with slowed down versions too, if you're interested in digging deeper. All that shit said: who really cares? Pronounce it however you want. Your pronunciation is certainly extremely close already, and is a lot closer to the "luke-term" way I was saying it before this video.

Thanks for sharing your detailed comparison! I agree that the Leuchtturm1917's paper is much better for fountain pens. It's good to know about the bookmark, I've actually always felt like it was too long! Thanks for the comment!

Hey! So an example would be: Goal = lose 10 lbs, System = Go to gym M, T, W, Th. The systems provide the framework to make the goal happen. If you have not read Atomic Habits I highly recommend it! The link for the book is in the video description. He explains that success is the product of daily habits, and we become our habits. Habits form based on frequency, not time. Small habits compound. I have also made a couple of videos on setting and achieving goals if you want to check them out. Thanks for the comment!

Great video but I don’t like (respectfully, you do you 😊) the notebook you are using as the pen ghosting through the paper looks awful to me. People want different things out of their notebooks and not getting distracted by what’s on the next page is high on my list. I have an A4 folder (lever clip, not rings) that I can insert printed monthly calendars, weekly overview sheets, financial trackers, and other things as needed. Because they are printed templates I imagine I save a lot of time in not having to draw them out into a notebook. Is mine a notebook? No, but it is highly personalised and has space for journaling, to dos, and other personal and professional needs and isn’t that what everyone is ultimately seeking from a notebook really?

I have been a "DIY Planner" for almost 9 years, but I was always afraid to do it in a bound book because I made so many mistakes! I used a disc-bound notebook from Levenger for years, but now that I have "found my groove," I am ventured out into a bound-book because they are so much more compact and easier to carry around! I still want to go smaller, though, so will be trying out Field Notes in 2025, but I will likely carry 3-4 at a time in a leather cover, so I can section it out to meet my needs. One thing I always keep in my planners is Family Contact Information (because I can never remember street numbers and zip codes, and sometimes need it to fill out forms), Prescription Medication List with websites and/or phone numbers for ordering refills, List of Birthdays with Gift Ideas, and contact information for Medical Professionals and Health Insurance Claims/Customer Service. As always, love your content! Practical and concise!

Great video! I am struggling years over years about using the right planner. I think I have tryed out (and bought🙈) nearly everyone. I am 57 and I love paper. I would love (!) to get everything in one planner. So at the moment I use a Filofax in A5. I love the organisation in it. BUT: I would love it more without rings, make this sense😅? In my Filofax I have a place for everything and it is so flexibel. But I don't like to archive my year in a ringplanner. I would love to get everything in one book. I do journal in a notebook, plan in my Filofax and for crazy days I also use another notebook for my to do list. I cannot remember how often I've wished, that I have everything in one notebook. Send you warm greetings from Germany 😊.
