Hey mate, not expecting a response here but i'm having a real hard time with my Markon SL105. It also has a choke and a bridge rectifier, but has an oldschool AVR rather than a resistor. It appears to power the rotor coil directly from the choke and rectifier, then uses the AVR to 'siphon' voltage away from the coil. Ive purchased a SX-460 in the hopes that I would be able to use it to get a stable voltage, do you know whether i can disconnect the choke and the avr, then use the SX-460 to regulate the coltage through the brushes, instead of the old AVR 'siphoning' the power off from the brushes? Thanks so much if you see this!

Mate, that video was made a long time ago, so I've very rusty on that. The SX-460 does replace everything iirc, and supplies the correct field current based on the output voltage. Let me know how you get on.

Cheers for the reply mate, i'm going to give it a shot. One question I had i hope you can answer before I begin though.. If i removed the choke and rectifier and powered the SX-460 through the generator outlet, then how would the AVR get any voltage to regulate in the first place. In my head the stator cannot generate any power without a dc voltage from the AVR, but the AVR surely requires power to regulate and send in the first place? This has got me a little stumped haha. @@TonyLing

Hi mate, so i removed the ac wires from the rectifier so as to not pass any voltage from the aux winding to the slip rings, then installed the SX-460 to the F1 and F2 wires to the slip rings, i am getting a clean 230v @ 49.5hz which is great. The only thing that concerns me now is that my engine had to be pushed to full speed to order to reach the 49.6hz, not sure if thats normal. Thanks for the help mate!@@TonyLing

That's really made my day to hear that. I still have the stability issue on that radio to chase down. In all likelihood it will be another leaking tant. I have bought another TRA.976 since which works exactly as it should. I wonder how many were made and how many exist. They appear to be quite rare. I'm still searching for a usable schematic on this which appear to be even rarer.
@michaelbrunsdon243
@michaelbrunsdon243 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Tony, I think they are quite rare but I read somewhere they had been used in Iraq. They do appear to be a bit flimsey compared to the Clansman PRC 351, I suppose they were made as a budget radio. I have a schematic of both boards which I can send you that I downloaded but you may have the same file already. It's much clearer looking at it on the PC but it doesn't look too great once printed out. My TRA 967 is in unissued condition, I picked it up at one of the rallies, it's mint. I eventually got all the accessories for it, Carry Bag, gooseneck, aerial, battery box, handset and headset. Let me know if you want the schematic file and I'll send it to you. Cheers, Mike
@TonyLing
@TonyLing 2 жыл бұрын
@@michaelbrunsdon243 They certainly are lightweight compared with a fully built up PRC-352, you have to pity the poor scaleybacks who had to lug those around with a gun and pack. My second 967 looks like it may have been issued at one point but has had an easy life. The schematics I have come in three images per page and the synth board is particularly unreadable, particularly with the synth board. I would be delighted if you can send me a better quality schematic. My email is on QRZ.

@TonyLing
@TonyLing 3 жыл бұрын
@@aussieguy751 I got it through eBay from an amateur just down the coast from here. He had worked out in Australia. Codans are very rare in the UK. The three channels which it is equipped with are Dymo'd on the front. They are outback channels which indicates its original purpose. The 7515 uses a crystal module for each channel I believe. You can work out the Tx & Rx frequencies by reading off the xtals and applying a formula. With Codans, the first two digits of the model number indicate the year of release. More modern radios are programmable via PC.

Open reel tape decks were always pricey, and there are a lot of enthusiasts and collectors even in this digital age which keeps the prices aloft. Expect to pay around £250 upwards for a Uher Reporter 4000 like this.

I second the idea of fitting an AVR made for "brushless" alternators to a brush alternator. After all it's just sensing input voltage and adjusting field current, no matter if there are brushes involved or not. However field current is considerably higher in brush alternators
5 жыл бұрын
I also have such an old slip ring alternator, four poles, four slip rings, 11.5 KVA. I used a GAVR-15 but already toasted two of them. They are not capable to deliver the current needs of my alternator. Currently seeking a more powerful AVR, any ideas?

Thank you so much Tony for your great video, my name is John and I live in Thailand in a village, we have town power but as soon as it rains the power goes off. some time ago I bought a Chinese alternator and built a 3Kva generator with a Kabota engine to run the house. after 4 year of use the insulation on the wires from the brushes worn out with the vibration and burnt out the excitation stator coil, I did think of a rewind but quite expensive over here, then by chance I found your video on you tube and ordered a SX 460 AVR, It was so easy to install and set up we now have power again and it works better than it ever did before, Thanks once again Tony for saving me money and making this great video, John...
