You could add a little more rush for that matchup, but it's probably fine the way it is now. Purple Luffy also seems winnable if you can get a Hina early-on. Yeah, it's a good question - I personally want to wait a little bit before making adjustments, because I feel the West's meta always changes up a good bit after release as people start including new cards to counter the latest decks. Many black cards reduce the cost of opponent's characters so that you can KO those characters more easily. (So you are not actually reducing the cost of the character in the opponent's hand. They already played the character, now it is on the board, and then you are reducing its cost.) So for example. I activate my Smoker Leader effect and give an opponent's 4-cost character minus 1 cost. Now that character is a 3-cost. Then I play Koby, who KO's a 3-cost, to kill the opponent's character.

Again, I personally think it's better in some ways, cuz a 1c character that searches Top 5 almost always comes with the risk of bottomdecking your best late-game characters, the powerful 8, 9, and 10 costs. With these events, you can actually grab all those late game characters. But I do agree, I'd like to see a lot of off-meta decks that weren't able to run searchers before now be able to search their key pieces. I used to play R/B Sabo, and I absolutely loved that deck, but I couldn't run any searchers, cuz 1/3 of the deck was Navy, 1/3 was Rev Army, and 1/3 was StrawHats. Now I can actually search those pieces, which is super neat 👌

So I absolutely agree there are certain decks that gladly forgo these cards, because they just don't need them due to their current engines being consistent enough, like Blackbeard & Doffy. For the reasons you stated, such decks would pass on these cards cuz they're not increasing the deck's current consistency by much But for many other decks, I think the risks you stated are absolutely trivial compared to the consistency these cards bring. I think the point about playing these cards any later than Turn 2 or 3 is moot, because you can make that point about any searcher, even most searcher bodies. Not being a counter is valid. But the fact that off-life this card isn't a brick alleviates a lot of the risk of running non-counter. It's not a true brick like an 8-10c character would be. You have a chance to use it early on to find something. And if you get it off life, when your opponent's going for lethal, that is normally the riskiest time to see a brick, cuz you don't have a chance to do anything with it before your opponent runs you over. But here, you'll likely convert in into a 1k off trigger (granted, not a 2k, cuz most 4c+ units are not 2k's, but you'll get some counter nonetheless). Can you see 4 of these cards in your hand against a Zoro/Doffy/etc and die cuz you had no counter? Sure, but that's an abysmal hand to start with anyways, and you really wouldn't be much happier if you had a hand full of, say, 4 Brannews lol. As far as the odds of finding any 4-of in my deck being 32%... Idk, I guess we perceive that statement differently my friend 😆. A 1/3rd chance of finding any given card sounds pretty damn good to me! But to be serious - I hear you, obviously it's not like whatever you could possibly want is gonna be in the Top 4 cards of your deck - but I think the point I'm moreso making is that regardless of what IS in the Top 4 of your deck, you have an extremely versatile search that will allow you to grab whichever card is most suitable for your current situation/matchup. Normally in any given search, there will be a couple of cards where I'll think "Damn, it's a shame the rest of these have to go to the bottom, I'm really gonna need that card later." With these events, whatever key card is in those Top 4, you can most likely grab it. The likelihood that ONE of the cards you'd like to see for the matchup is in those Top 4 is quite high. You have options; you won't be pinching yourself for searching and bottomdecking one of the important cards you needed. I think that's the insanely good part - not that you'll definitely find the *exact* card you want, but that you can most likely choose the best card out of the four, every single time. I do agree with you that I don't think these cards replace body searchers (at least not for all decks). 8c Moria for example always wants the ability to revive a 2c searcher from trash, which is not something that could be done with these events. So I certainly don't think all decks suddenly drop their body searchers, but I do think plenty decks can supplement them with these events, and others probably do replace the searchers outright and go for much more diverse builds

One thing to consider is that a lot of the 2ks that people put on the deck are low cost by default. One thing with the archetype searchers is that even if you miss out of your huge bombs sometimes you're more often than not getting a 2k on your hand. And by the end of the game the 2ks in your hand sometimes are the difference between life and death. It does raise the value of the 4c+ 2ks tho so Egghead Franky and Perona become even more attractive than what they already are

@@Thomazbr Agreed, this definitely came to my mind as well, but as you mentioned, I think people will just start running more of the 4c and 5c 2k's (Perona, Mihawk, Satori, Franky, Carrot, Vergo, etc), and overall just adjust their deckbuilding around these events Putting these events in your decks definitely comes with some considerations, but there are ways to accommodate those for sure

Hard agree - hyper consistency is what I hated about YuGiOh, and a healthy amount of inconsistency makes a card game way more fun and conducive to skill expression imo. Sad to see this being introduced to One Piece... But we'll see what happens I suppose

Yugioh is more of one card combos, not hyper consistency cause you can straight brick, but it is those one card combos that hurt. For OP the tiger might not be too bad since it’s a 10c, but playing around 8c are gonna be pretty norm for a bit

Not gonna lie, I don't have a ton of experience as Smoker with that matchup. I feel like very few people are still playing Black Luffy. But I imagine the matchup shouldn't be too bad. I would try to find Stage in that matchup, as it basically nullifies Luffy's cost-raising leader ability, which is his biggest threat to Smoker

Hmm. You could, but I will say Moria is really handy. I still think 2 Moria at least is really useful. Moria can be used full defensively, reviving Rebecca and Brannew, putting a blocker on board and adding 2 extra cards to hand. He can be used offensively for removal, playing Rebecca into Koby to kill a medium unit Or he can be used for pure cost reduction, playing out Rebecca > Hina + Tsuru to reduce something into Jack range I think Moria's just too versatile, and 10c Kuzan is already doing Issho's job better. Personally I wouldn't put any Issho's in this list and keep Moria at 2-3. If you watch my Gameplay Guide video, I actually went up to 3 😅 I just don't think Issho does much for this deck personally

I think it will. I think Smoker can contend with Shanks and Doffy. Blackbeard will be tough, but Jack + 5c Tashigi's second effect will be very handy in that matchup. So I'm actually pretty optimistic that this deck will last in OP9 & OP10

Certainly not expensive compared to most meta decks. Most of the cards you'll have simply by buying 2 copies of the Smoker Starter Deck, which together should cost you $25 USD. After that, you'll need 4 Jacks ($4), 3 Morias ($6), 3 Kuzans ($5), and 3 Borsalinos ($4), which together will cost you about $61. The rest of the key cards, like Brannew and Sakazuki are a few cents. (A few cards, like 2k counter Tashigi pricier than I'd expect, but you could swap that out for any other Navy 2k.) I think shipping included, you should be able to put together the deck I'm playing for less than $100, which is actually pretty good for most TCG's 😆

Haha, yeah, I mean every deck can brick I guess. It definitely happens with this deck, but Jack and Sengoku usually help you work through it. But yeah, if you draw nothing but bricks at the beginning, you will understandably get cooked lol. As far as changes for 09, not too many I can think of. I think Jack becomes even more crucial, because it still works against Blackbeard. Tashigi's Activate Main still works too, but she doesn't get her On-Play cost reduction, so you might want to run a fourth Ice Age to help Tashigi out. I suppose 4c Kuzan could help too. But I'm wary of trying to fix one matchup and worsening a bunch of others in the process. I think this deck will do fine into Doffy and Shanks - Blackbeard maybe tough, but again, Jack, Tashigi, and Ice Age should make it winnable. I wouldn't try too hard to fix the BB matchup and risk making the deck worse overall.

That's a pretty smart tech for sure. We already have 4 Jack, who can Activate Main to KO Blackbeard's units. But if you feel that's not enough, you could definitely replace the two 6c Sakazuki with two 5c Garp. Smart idea for sure 👌

@@Zupermario90 Yeah exactly - Garp is good for sure, but I don't like that he's constantly wrecking your hand-size. Jack allows you to get rid of bricks and fish for new cards, and sticks on board much better than Garp. But again, I don't mind running 4 Jack + 2 Garp. I might try it out when next set releases

LOL. Don't get me wrong, Doffy is always gonna be an extremely sweaty game. But at this point, I've beaten enough good Doffy players with the deck to know it's not just cope. If you can get 2 Jacks + Navy HQ, it becomes easy mode tbh. If not, it's definitely tough. You'll need to instead Rebecca + 5c Tashigi + 7k swing your way to victory lol. And usually that still needs to be supported by 1 Jack

No need tbh. Pretty much all cards in this deck are necessary, so there's not any flex spots that I could swap out for Sabos anyway. And besides that, Jack is already hard enough to kill, and 10c Kuzan is similar.

LOL. Garp works 👍 Saka is 6 Don to kill a 5-cost. Garp is the same technically. Just attach one to Leader, spend 5 on Garp, and you get the same effect. Problem is, Garp will rest himself and so he will get swung at, at a point when you probably want your opponent to be swinging at life to give you more cards. But if you're fine with that, sure, Garp works

Pardon the long response, but here's the full answer, lol: Early and mid-game, it's just too hard to reduce things down to 1 in this deck. Playing a Brook on Turn 2 does nothing, because unless you use a whole Ice Age for a measly 4c unit, you're not killing anything with him. Next turn, you wanna play Tashigi on 6 Don, so there's no Don left for reduction to get a Brook kill. Late game, you have Kuzan on board, and his -5 cost reduction allows you to kill all big threats with Jack. Brook becomes kinda unnecessary at that point. IF your opponent decides to go wide rather than go tall, you can kill multiple unites a turn by using Jack for one kill, Moria > Rebecca > Koby for the other. And Koby is better synergy than Brook, cuz even though he requires a discard, he kills higher cost units, and he can be discarded for Sengoku draws.

@@Wolftron21 Yeah not sure if you were playing against 8.5 Pluffy or 09 Pluffy, but 09 I definitely imagine is gonna be tough. Even 8.5 is already scary if they get their perfect curve - the Pluffy I played in this video took very long to see his Kaido, so I acknowledge I got a little lucky there. But yeah, currently, I do think this deck is actually very very solid. I've beat very good Doffy players irl with it (much better than the Doffy I played in this vid, lol). So if Doffy remains meta king in 09, I think this deck will last even into next set 🤞

@ yeah I was playing against 8.5 pluffy he saw kaido multiple times a game, and game 2 he managed to drop 3 magellans on me which just set me back so far… it felt winnable still just unlucky!

Hey thanks so much for watching and for comment! I'm not gonna lie chief - yes, Rebecca is an absolute all-star in any black deck. So at the very least, I can tell you that buying a playset of Rebeccas will be a great investment, because she is an automatic 4-of in almost ANY Black deck, not just Smoker. Could you play without her? Sure. But the winrate will definitely reflect it lol. I just won another locals today with this deck, and hardest match was a very tough game against Doffy. I only won cuz saw multiple Rebeccas, which I played to grab 5c Tashigi from trash, which I then played to kill a unit, while putting 1 Don on leader to reduce another unit and using Jack to kill that. I did that exact play TWICE, all thanks to Rebecca. Card is just too good haha But again, I encourage you to just enjoy playing the deck, so if you don't have it right now, replace her with something else and just play and have fun anyway! 😄

Don't mind people who don't know how to deck build by themselves and only copy paste top lists telling you you need to invest loads of money on a single card for a deck to work. If you want a very cheap alternative for the Rebecca just play the 4 cost Shirahoshi blocker (ST08-006), you can play her from Gecko Moria to have a blocker and -4 the cost of someting just like you would with Rebecca into Hina. And I garantee you will catch a lot of people offguard even if you just hard cast her into removal.

Tashigi is such a godsend for this deck yes! And yeah, you could certainly try this card out in RG Oden, but you might wanna consider running the Land Of Wano stage if you wanna do that

I wrote a whole wall of text for someone else on the other video about why I didn't include Brook, so I'll just copy and paste that here, and do a separate reply for your other questions, lol: Early and mid-game, it's just too hard to reduce things down to 1 in this deck. Sabo is unnecessary I'd say. Jack has more survivability, and Jack into 10c Kuzan the next turn is literally just a BETTER version of Sabo, killing a 5 and an 8, instead of a 5 and a 3. 4c Kuzan is also unnecessary, as he is a very vulnerable unit, and the cost reduction we require in the mid-game is handled by Tashigi herself before she activates her kill. Late game, Moria > Rebecca > Hina or simply 10c Kuzan will provide the needed cost reduction. As for Navy HQ, I wonder this question myself haha. I really do want to up it to 3, because at 2, it often won't show up in time in the Doffy matchup. The only thing I could think to cut would be a 2k counter honestly. Probably 1 copy of the 2k Tashigi. That's literally the only thing I would be willing to part with.

Yes definitely, but as someone else mentioned, if you put it in Yamato, you have to go for the 6c Yellow Kinemon instead of the 6c Green one!

Personally, I don't like it. Don't get me wrong, it's great in some decks, and the hand-rip effect is good - but 10c Kuzan feels like the right choice for this deck. Kuzan's cost-reduction is of course superior, but that's not even the main reason I favor Kuzan. Issho's reduction is actually sufficient, but the fact that he doesn't pop anything on-play actually makes him much "slower" than Kuzan. I need all my boss monsters to kill something immediately the turn they're played - and Jack, Moria, and Kuzan can all do that. Issho unfortunately cannot

Very possible! I was just being conservative by saying Turn 2, but I think Turn 1 can be set up about half the time. KINEMON TURBOOOOO 🔥

Hmm, it's an interesting suggestion! Basically an extra Leader effect. I just think it seems like more of a "nice-to-have" though. The fact that it gets rested and that it's only a 1c 1k unit means it's gonna be killed easily, one way or another. Sure it might "pseudo-block," but that's only really helpful if your opponent has all big bodies on board. Chances are they will have a 2k or 3k searcher that they can use to swing into your Belle-mere. I think at the moment this card is best in Perona Leader. Allows you to rest a 5c Blocker while not losing out on any attack power. But in Smoker I don't think it's doing much. Just my thoughts!

That Tashigi is sooo good. Played a tournament yesterday and ran into a R/B Sabo, who is the bane of Black decks, but I was able to win thanks to seeing three Tashigi's. And yes, the Sengoku feels phenomenal for finding your pieces

You're correct, I kinda sped through the play and didn't attach 1 Don to Leader since it couldn't swing that turn anyway, but yeah basically I was using Leader ability to reduce it down to zero. Cuz I had 3 Don left over that turn (and run no counter events in my deck, and my opponent knows that). So those active Don were not doing anything, and one of them was meant to be attached, or that was my intention at least Not okay in tournament play for sure though, so good callout

That’s not a bad strategy, but keeping them at 4 life is fine as well. It still keeps everything but Jozu in KO range for Yamato and then when you get to end game you can pretty much close out in one turn.

@ For sure, I feel like every match I’ve played the Doffy plays 2 or more Jozus and it feels bad using a raigo to kill it and not heal on a turn and being a 7k feels rough to counter out of when it attacks me as well as it taking either Don commitment from me for something like Rush Enel to attack into it or using an ace swing to kill it
